The primary objective of this course is to experience the possibilities, limitations and traps of quantitative methods and how to make use of them in managerial decision making. Emphasis is put on the way these methods can be helpful to a manager as an aid to decision making. Participants will experience this aspect of quantitative methods by examining and discussing a number of small scale applications inspired by real life situations. After completing the course, participants will know how to build a model, to choose the appropriate technique, and to assess the results obtained in order to analyze and solve a problem. The mathematical foundations are treated up to the level needed to understand the applicability/ inapplicability of quantitative methods. They are only relevant as background information and are not the main subject of the course. n Accounting The objective of this course is to help students develop a framework for understanding corporate financial reports. We will address basic accounting questions that should help them identify situations where there is a correct answer from those where judgement is required. This course provides only an overview of financial reporting. It deals with accounting concepts that students should be familiar with as users of financial reports, and highlights some of the challenges related to financial reporting. In a second part, focus will be on the use of accounting data for internal planning and control. Emphasis will be on cost accounting, budgeting and resource allocation, performance assessment, ratio analysis and assessment of financing needs. Management cannot be effective without an appropriate approach to management control, and performance measurement is at the core of any control system. The course will focus on the use and role of information, control and organizational structure, design of standards and systems for measuring performances and management control systems.

Next the focus will switch to firms on the supply side of the market, and more specifically to the firms costs, revenue, profit, objectives and behavior in the market given the market structure. In the last part, we will consider market imperfections and the role of government.

n Managing

people in a Global Context

Marketing pertains to the set of activities that try to establish mutually beneficial exchanges. These exchanges can take the form of purchases and sales, entailing monetary or non-monetary (emotional or other) compensation. Further, depending on the type of parties involved, a distinction is made between B to B and B to C marketing contexts, so consumer behavior can be studied in a business context (business marketing) or in relation to the end consumer (consumer marketing). Marketing analyzes the context (culture, demography, environment), and individual behavior patterns (evaluation, choice, habit) and their impact on consumption and marketing strategy. In this course, we focus on general marketing principles and the basic mechanisms that determine consumer reactions. We try to give students a feeling for the nature of marketing management using the business game Markstrat3. n Development

This course combines various disciplines dealing with the human aspects of organizations. Emphasis is on management of human resources in an organizational context. To fully understand the impact of the different HR practices, we will introduce the course with some general notions on motivation, leadership and culture. The main disciplines we will use are Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management and Change Management. n Financial

of Personal Management Talent

The student will learn a framework, concepts and tools for analyzing financial decisions. Topics covered include discounted cash flow analysis, investment analysis, capital budgeting, cost of capital, capital structure, dividend policy, valuation and capital asset pricing, valuation of financial and real options, and short-term financial management and planning. n Global

Personal growth and development is of high significance in a continuously changing society. A strong awareness of the possible impacts of your actions on your colleagues and on the world around you is equally important. This course aims for an in-depth development of basic skills and attitudes in order for students to develop authenticity. This is crucial for any individual to function well in an organizational (and social) setting. In this course the emphasis is put on: 1. gaining insights into your own potential and talents. 2. gaining insights into how you function individually and within a team. 3. learning how to apply these insights into a professional context. 4. understanding the conceptual framework and the underlying connections of the development of management talent.

Strategic Management

The Strategic Management course aims to provide participants with a broader understanding of strategic issues in organizations. It focuses on the content of strategy and on how a strategy is developed. A problem-based approach to theoretical concepts will be used. The course proposes a consultancy perspective to strategy and strategic management problems. Participants must (try to) apply the theoretical concepts discussed in the sessions, both within a specific industry and in different case study situations.

International Business Project

n Business

in the European Union

Regional trade groups and economic integration increasingly determine world trade and business. The European Union (EU) is no doubt one of the oldest, largest and most success-ful examples of economic integration. A solid insight into the economic and business aspects of the EU not only helps to understand the business environment in the EU, but also provides insight into integration areas like NAFTA, MERCOSUR, ASEAN, SACU and many other regional trade arrangements. The course will introduce students to the principles and the functioning of the EU. Special attention is given to basic EU economic policies, and how these influence and determine business opportunities and strategies in the EU. Students must realize that the European market is characterized by intense competition, which provides further motivation for European firms to improve both their efficiency. n Asian

Economic and Business Environment

In the course of the academic year, interactive seminars and a variety of workshops, team assignments, business games, etc. will lay the foundation for in-depth knowledge and understanding of the global economy. Moreover, a number of workshops aimed at developing essential management skills will help you carry out your international project successfully. These workshops will focus on your personal development by creating self awareness and critical reflection, communication and presentation skills as well as teamwork skills. Being able to deal with diversity is crucial when working in an international environment. Finally, general management skills such us international contract negotiation and leadership will prepare for day-to-day functioning in global positions. All of these are an integral part of your curriculum and an intensive preparation for your final project.

The course starts with the strategic importance of Asia from an economic and business perspective, as assessed by major indicators. These include indicators on the macro-economic situation, international competitiveness, the prevalence of corruption, cultural differences, etc. Regional economic integration in Asia is discussed, and selected Asian countries are reviewed in terms of historical as well as recent political, social and economic developments. International trade and foreign investment patterns of Asian regional groupings and selected Asian countries are discussed, and special attention is devoted to eligibility under the EUs Generalized System of Preferences, and to EU trade policies with regard to Asia (e.g. anti-dumping policies). Next, an indepth analysis and comparison of major business players in Asia is conducted. Some examples are the Japanese keiretsu and sogo soshas, the South Korean chaebol, government-linked and stateowned companies and former colonial trading houses. Finally, the major distribution systems are reviewed in selected Asian countries, together with alternative sources of business intelligence.

Career Management Service (CMS)

In interviewing and negotiation sessions students learn the dos and donts of job applications. In addition, interactive sessions on career orientation and strategies are organized, highlighting appropriate ways to explore and enter the labor market. Contacts with alumni conclude the informative and preparatory part of the program: former students come to share their job-seeking experience and to describe their current positions and employers. In the second semester, focus shifts to networking activities as students get to see and meet company representatives and recruiters. The companies meet the students on campus. They give a presentation on the company, saying who they are, what profiles they are looking for, how they proceed in their selection, etc. Forums are organized on specific themes to help students get to know a large number of companies. Often these activities are followed by on-campus interviews. By carrying out a consulting project or an internship in a given company, students get a chance to do their first job or acquire additional working experience. Throughout the year, students can consult the Career Management Service for personal coaching and counselling. Moreover, the CMS office acts as a career library with relevant books and magazines, annual company reports, and access to an extended company database. Through these services, Antwerp Management School strives to extend the unique experience of a post-academic management program by offering students a chance to acquire additional skills pertinent to their professional life, and to help them enter the labor market.

The Career Management Service at Antwerp Management School is dedicated to supporting students in their job hunts. Students are provided with the necessary skills and insights and are encouraged to manage their own careers. During the first semester, several workshops and seminars are organized which are an integral, compulsory part of the study program. They are led by professionals in close cooperation with the academic staff and the coordinator of the Career Management Service. Students are actively encouraged to take all the steps inherent to any job hunt: through selfassessment exercises they become more aware of their capacities, interests and values, and they are gradually able to define their job focus. This is the groundwork for writing an effective, personal motivation letter and resum.
