Bowl Championship Series Guidelines

The Bowl Championship Series playoff system seeds sixteen teams into a tournament to determine a true national champion. The tournament will last four weeks with games being played on Saturdays, except for the Championship game, which will be played on the Monday Night. Teams will play a 12-game season plus one conference championship game may be played for conferences with 12 teams. On the Sunday after Championship Saturday, all teams will have completed the regular season and the selected teams will be seeded in the NCAA tournament.

Automatic Berths
Each of the 12 conferences will receive one automatic berth to the conference champion. The conference presidents and athletic directors will decide the rules that determine who is the conference champion. Any conference with 12 or more teams will have a championship game and the winner will receive the automatic berth. Any team that is named the conference champion will automatically entered into the pool of teams to be seeded into the tournament.

At-Large Bids
After the 12 automatic berths have been determined, the final five spots will be given to the best teams remaining from the field. The top five teams that were not conference champions will be entered into the pool. Exceptions: 1. Each conference will only receive two bids. 2. An independent team must be ranked in the Top 10 of the BCS.

Seeding the Tournament

As with any tournament, the #1 seed will play the #16 seed, the #2 seed will play the #15, and so on. The teams will be seeded according to their ranking in the BCS Standings. An automatic birth does not automatically receive the higher seed. Any conference champions that are not ranked in the BCS standings will be ranked according to overall record, head-to-head, conference record, etc. The seeds of the tournament will be published on the Sunday after the Conference Championship Games. Note: Any teams that are not entered into the NCAA Tournament will be allowed to participate in a Non-BCS bowl. A team must have at least 6 wins to be bowl eligible.
