Introduction Vodafone Essar in India is a subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc and commenced opera tions in 1994 when its

predecessor Hutchison Telecom acquired the cellular licen se for Mumbai. Vodafone Essar now has operations in 23 circles. The company used to be named Hutchison Essar, reflecting the name of its previous owner, Hutchiso n. On September 20, 2007 Hutch became Vodafone in one of the biggest brand trans ition exercises in recent times. Over the years, Vodafone Essar, under the Hutch brand, has been named the Most Respected Telecom Company', the Best Mobile Service in the country' and the Most Creative and Most Effective Advertiser of the Year' . It offers both prepaid and postpaid GSM cellular phone coverage throughout Ind ia with good presence in the metros.

Vodafone Essar is the 1st Indian Telecom operator to receive the Payment Card In dustry Security Standard (PCI DSS) certification for its Mumbai operation in 200 9. Also it is the first time that Vodafone has launched Recharge Online.
