In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The title of the film As a group we decided that it would be a good idea to name our film 'The Haunted' because the main character in our film is a protagonist (Jessica) is being haunted by a former school friend in a deserted building. We also felt that naming our film 'The Haunted' emphasis on our story line, and also gave our audience a clue about what our production is about. The title of our film is also very unusual and snappy so this will ultimately attract any viewers who are watching our production.

Setting/location The setting/location of our film is mainly in school corridors, and on a stair case. We decided to shoot our production in a school to make it have a sense of uniqueness as most of the other thriller films where protagonists are haunted are usually set in haunted castles, haunted palaces, etc. We also thought it would be a good idea to shoot our film in school because this would draw more teenagers into watching our production, because it is quite rare or a thriller film to be set in a public secondary school. Another reason as to why we decided to set our film in a secondary school was to bring a sense or irony. This is because you would not expect dangerous things like that to take place in a safe environment, where there are CCTV cameras, etc. Another way we brought a sense of irony into our production was when we shot our last seen of our protagonist waking up in the school library realising it was all a dream, and then disappearing in a blink of an eye. Now, you would not expect something as spooky as that to happen in a safe library where other people are.

Costumes and props Our protagonist (Jessica) is seen wearing her usual sixth form college uniform as we wanted to make sure that we gave off the impression to our viewers that it was just an average, normal day and that nothing unusual was going to occur to Jessica's knowledge. Jessica's uniform enables our viewers to feel a warm sense of normality like nothing out of the ordinary is about to occur, and also shows our viewers how vulnerable she is as she is just a normal school girl, so as a result this makes our viewers question themselves with "What has she done?". Our antagonist (our ghostly figure) is seen wearing all black. We thought it would

be a good idea for our antagonist to be wearing all black as black is a mysterious, ghostly colour which can create tension in certain scenes. Our antagonist's make-up emphasizes her mysteriousness and makes her come across as being more intimidating and scarier. During the course of our production we only used to main props, these props were Jessica's iPod and Blackberry mobile phone. We decided to have Jessica's mobile phone with the battery flat as using a mobile phone with its battery flat in a thriller production where someone is trying to get help makes it a whole lot more dramatic, and ultimately adds more tension as there is no way that Jessica can get into contact with the outside world. We decided to use the iPod in our production as it shows that Jessica is just an normal school girl, and when Jessica has her headphones in her ears this makes our viewers feel as if she is even more vulnerable.

Camerawork and editing We decided to use lots of different shots from lots of different angles which made our production more advanced. The first shot that our viewers see is a medium shot of Jessica walking towards her locker. We decided to use a medium shot of our protagonist at the beginning of our production to make sure that our viewers Jessica's school uniform clearly, and to make sure that they saw how tall Jessica is. Another shot that we decided to use in our production as an extreme close-up. We used an extreme close-up when Jessica was running away from the ghostly figure so we could show just how worried, scared, and confused Jessica was. We also thought it would be a good idea to use a low shot and a long shot as these shots enable our viewers to have a better view of what surrounds our protagonist. Lastly we used an over the shoulder shot, this was because we thought that an over the shoulder shot would give our audience a better view of our antagonist, and it would also make our viewers feel as if they were actually there in the scene along with our protagonist. As a group we decided to make the colour of our production a little more darker, this was purely because we thought that it would set the scene more and make our viewers more suspicious if something was going to happen. Throughout our production we decided to use non-diegetic sounds as this would make our production more scarier and mysterious.

Title font and style The opening sequence of our production is 'The Haunted'. The title of our production is at the end of our video in a red font with a white backdrop, we used a white backdrop to make our title stand out more, and for it to look more unique and unusual. We decided to use the font 'Al Bayan' as it makes our title look more professional, and it catches our audience's eye more easily. Lastly, we used the font 'Bleeding Cowboys' in red and white for our production logo, our reasons for this were because we believed that the font 'Bleeding Cowboys' was very unusual and we could not find any other production which used the same font as us. The reasons why we used the colours red and white for our production logo is because we wanted to use the same colours as we did for our title of our production.

Story and how the opening sets it up The first scene that our viewers see in our production is of our protagonist walking normally towards her locker to collect her iPod, this immediately creates an enigma ''Why is she walking towards her locker? What is she doing?''. Having our protagonist walking down the corridor towards her locker at the start of our production creates tension as at first our audience are unaware that Jessica is walking towards her locker, so this creates an enigma and has our audience questioning themselves with "Where is she going? What is she doing?".

Genre and how the opening suggests it Considering the fact that our production is a thriller, we decided to research into other thrillers to decide how we should open our production. One of the best thrillers that we researched into was 'Scream', Scream starts off with a great sense of normality, but it gradually starts to fit into its genre during the course of the film. Using this research we decided that it would be a good idea for us to do the same for our production. We started our production off with our protagonist (Jessica) walking down the corridor at the school she attends like it was a normal day, but later on in the film we gradually started to show the ghostly figure, etc.

How characters are introduced We had three main characters in our production. Our first main character is Jessica (our protagonist), Jessica was first seen walking down a school corridor towards her locker like a normal, vulnerable, school girl. This automatically has our audience questioning themselves with "Why is she walking towards her locker? Is something about to happen?". Our production is a thriller, so having the beginning to our production consist of our main character walkintg down a school corridor like a normal school girl brings a little sense of irony. Once Jessica is at her locker and is in the process of collecting her iPod, a ghostly figure appears behind her, but then disappears within a matter of seconds. This builds up a sense of tension and immediately creates an enigma. At this point, our viewers are questioning themselves with "Where has that ghostly figure gone? Who is she? Why was she there?". Our second main character is the dead body which is laying down in front of a flight of stairs. The fact that our second main character is laying down in front fo a flight of stairs instantly creates an enigma. At this point our audience are questioning themselves with "Why is she there? Is she ok? Did she fall down the stairs?". Finally, our third main character is our ghostly figure. The first time that our audience get to see our ghostly figure is when Jessica is greeted by her while she gradually moves up the flight of stairs. This instantly creates more enigmas like "Who is she? Why is she there? Why does she want Jessica so badly?"

Special effects Our production consists of many special effects. The first special effect is when our antagonist (ghostly figure) is standing behind our protagonist (Jessica). When our antagonist appears behind our protagonist, this annoys the audience as our audience want to alert Jessica that there is a dangerous figure behind her, aka dramatic irony. The second effect which we used in our production is when Jessica sees our antagonist is appearing on different steps on the staircase. We used this effect to make sure that our audience knew that our ghostly figure was definitely not normal, and that she was there to hunt Jessica down.
