Service manual 1.2 Appliance description

The Side-by-Side appliance is a 1 compressor FreezerFridge w ith automatic evaporator defrost. The appliance w orks by means of a 230VAC / 50Hz pow er supply, the temperature inside the appliance is regulated by means of tw o sensors (one inside the freezer and the other one inside the fridge). The appliance is controlled by tw o electronic boards (see chapter: 2).
Air Flow A fan, mounted in the air duct draw s room air into the unit compartment through the right side of the front base grille (A), through the condenser (B), and around the compressor (C). lt is then forced into the exhaust duct (D), w here some of the w arm air is exhausted out holes in the rear (E), but most of it goes forw ard through the duct, passing over the defrost evaporation tray w here it evaporates any w ater in the tray. Inside the refrigerator, cold air is distributed to the freezer and refrigerator compartments by a fan mounted in a fan shroud at the rear of the freezer compartment, just above the evaporator. The fan air up through the evaporator w here it is cooled.

Inside the refrigerator cold air is distributed to the freezer compartment, just above the evaporator. The fan draw s air up through the evaporator w here it is cooled. The cold air is delivered to the freezer through a cold air outlet about halfw ay up at the right rear of the freezer compartment, and through louvers at the top rear of the compartment. Freezer air is returned to the evaporator for re-cooling through louvers in the low er part of the evaporator cover. Cold air enters the refrigerator compartment at the upper left side, near the back, by means of an air passagew ay through the divider w all betw een the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Refrigerator air is returned to the evaporator for recooling through an air passage at the low er left side of the compartment, near the rear.

There is no possibility to service / replace the heat exchanger in case of a hidden leak or a restriction in the capillary tube. These components are not accessible. Nor is there a service procedure for the repair of the stile and mullion heat loop, should it ever develop a leak. The possibility o a failure occurring in these areas is quite remote.

3.2 Evaporator Defrost Cycle

The defrost cycle starts w hen: the compressor runs(effective running time) for at least 8 hours; a door w as opened since the last defrost cycle; 50 hours passed since the last defrost cycle; both doors are CLOSED until the time of 50hrs.

Termination of the evaporator defrost cycle: 1. Standard function sw itches OFF 2. Freezer over temperature alarm is OFF 3. Compressor and both fans(compressor + evaporator) sw itches OFF 4. 4. Icemaker
4.1 How does the ice maker w ork?
Water is automatically measured into the ice makers mould by a solenoid-operated w ater inlet valve. The Bimetal thermostat mounted betw een the support housing (see draw ing below ) and the mould detects the w ater / ice temperature. When the ice is cooled dow n to about 9C, the thermostat sw itches the ice maker motor and the ice maker heater ON. The motor and the ejector blades begin to rotate. The ejector blades rotate about a quarter until they are on the ice. The ice is frozen hard in the mould so the motor w ill stall on the ice and apply pressure through the ejector blades. During the stall period the heater is w arming the mould to loosen the ice. This may take a few (up to five) minutes. When the ice is loosen, the ejector blades and the motor completes the rotation and remove the ice from the mould. The w ater valve solenoid sw itches on again, to inject fresh w ater. The ice w ill be collected in an ice container fitted in the door.

4.2 Ice control system

Once during every injection cycle, the Ice control system (Emitter / Receiver see also chapter 8 troubleshooting) detects the Ice level into the Ice container.

Ice control system EMITTER (the emitter is placed on the left side of the freezer compartment underneath the ice maker)

Service manual

Ice control system RECEIVER (the receiver is placed on the right side of the freezer compartment underneath the ice maker)

When the ice container is full, the Ice control system detects the ice and prevents the system to overfill it. The ice maker start a new cycle of ice making w hen the ice volume rises dow n.

Attention:
The ice makers efficiency is determined by the temperature into the freezer compartment. The temperature inside the freezer should be minimum -12C or colder, to reach a quick making of ice cubes. Once installed, the first required action by the customer is to dispose the first container loads of produced ice cubes. They could be discoloured or have a bad taste and odour caused by a new plumbing connection. Ice cubes stored in the ice conveyor bin w ill absorb any odours w hich are in the air inside the refrigerator and freezer. Ice w hich is more than one w eek old: The old ice cubes may transfer a stale, musty odour to the new made ice cubes and the ice bin. Improper w rapping of foods in the refrigerator and freezer. Hidden odour from spoiled food / dried food spills. Food odours w ill settle into ice cubes if allow ed to circulate in the airflow of the refrigerator. Ice made w ith bad w ater quality. If the ice cubes are made w ith bad w ater quality, a w ater filter must be installed.

After a few degrees of motor rotation the timing cam sw itches the holding sw itch from C-NC to C-NO. This assures the completion of the cycle. The mould heater remains to on pow er through the thermostat circuit.

When the ejector blades reach the ice in the mould, the motor w ill stall. The motor remains in this position until the ice has thaw ed loose. During this time the mould heater remains to on pow er.

After about 5/6 of the complete rotation of the ejector blades the w ater valve sw itch closes and the w ater valve solenoid is on pow er (Voltage divider: mould heater solenoid) The w ater valve opens and w ater refills the mould. The ice cubes are dropped into the Ice container.

After a few degrees further of the motor rotation the Ice control system sw itches the shut off sw itch from C-NC to C-NO. When the ejector blades are again in the start position, the holding sw itch sw itches from C-NO to C-NC. The motor is sw itched off.

Rev. 01 di Ottobre 2003

If the Ice container is full w ith ice, the Ice control System detect them and the shut off sw itch remains in the C-NC position. Follow ing cycles w ill NOT start until the Ice Control System detects that the Ice cube level is to low in the Ice container in the door.

4.5 Water fill adjustment

The quantity of w ater is time regulated and is serial adjusted to 7,5 seconds, that estimates 125 ccm w ater. When the small hole is centred in the larger hole (see picture 1) the w ater fill adjustment is for 7,5 seconds fill time (normal). Turning the w ater level adjustment screw (see picture 2) moves the contact in relation to the contact ring segment (see picture 3). turning the screw clockw ise turning the screw counter-clockw ise = decreases w ater filling = increases w ater filling

A complete rotation (360) effects a filling of 40 cm w ater (~ 2,4 sec.) A half rotation (180) effects a filling of 20 cm w ater (~ 1,2 sec.) AT T ENT IO N: only one rotation is possible. Further adjustment could damage the module! If the adjustment screw falls out, just put it back in and align the hole in the sight hole as show n in picture 1.

5. Dispenser System
5.1 The Ice & water dispensing system
The new electronic ice and w ater dispenser provides improved performance and is easier to use. It is a simplified design, using half the number of parts as the previous (old) design and the dispenser is also easy to service and maintain. Water for the ice maker and iced water dispenser is supplied in the following termination: for the iced w ater dispenser the w ater flow s from the solenoid valve through a plastic w ater tube to the w ater reservoir(into the bottom of the refrigerator compartment). Leaving the w ater reservoir, the tube goes to the base plate unit (compressor-unit) and across to the low er freezer hinge and then up into the iced w ater dispenser. For the ice maker the w ater flow s from the solenoid valve through a plastic w ater tube from the backside of the appliance over the top to the front roof of the freezer compartment and then into the w ater fill cup of the ice maker.

5.6 Basics and benefits about

the w ater filter and the iced w ater dispenser Cold surfaces, such as ice, absorb bad odour faster than w arm surfaces. In this case there are a lot of reasons for bad odours and tastes in your ice w ater or ice cubes: After the installation of a new refrigerator clean the Ice bin rinse the iced w ater tube and reservoir by dispensing a few litres of w ater through the dispenser.

Good reasons to install a w ater filter system :

fresher Ice reduction of bad tastes and odours helps to reduce lime(calcium) build up in the w ater system reduction of chlorine, dirt, rust and other micro particles

8.3 IDI SERVICE DIAGNOSTIC or How to test the IDI (Ice Dispenser Control boards)
The service diagnostics mode checks only the f unction of the optical system (Receiver & Emitter). To enter this mode, open the f reezer door af ter the main pow er applied f or at least one minute. The status LED should f lash tw ice, then pause f or 1 second, then repeat this sequence as long as the door is open.

Rev. 01 di Ottobre 2003

Pagina 43 di 65

Service manual
If the user pushes on the emitters f lap door, the optics path should be cleared, and the LED should be on solid. The service diagnostics mode cannot be entered if the icemaker is in the middle of an ice making process. To determine if the icemaker is in the ice making process, press in the door sw itch and look at the status LED. When the door sw itch is pushed IN during a ice making process, the status LED w ill f lash ON and OFF one pulse every second. If the IDI control is in the diagnostic mode it cannot enter the ice making process mode.

How to test the IDI (Ice Dispenser Control) boards w hen installed in a product: 1. The icemaker must not be in the park position (ejector f ingers pointing on 2:00)-(f actory side built in w ith the f ingers on 12:00). 2. With the f reezer door closed apply pow er to the product (thus to the IDI boards). This initiates the pow er up diagnostics procedure. 3. Open the f reezer door and check the diagnostic LED. (f rom the time that pow er is applied to the IDI board you have one minute to check the results of the pow er up diagnostic procedure). The status diagnostics LED should be ON (continuous f or 5 seconds) indicating that everything is ok.

IDI error codes are as follows:

2 f lashes, 1 second of f then repeat the tw o f lashes:

indicates an optics problem

3 f lashes, 1 second of f then repeat the three f lashes:

indicates the icemaker is not present (could be caused by the icemaker being in the park position).
4 f lashes, 1 second of f then repeat the f our f lashes:

indicates the relay on the receiver board did not close.

(the receiver board is def ective and must be exchanged). When you open the door and the system detects more than one (multiple) error codes you w ill see the f irst error code. Then you have to f ix the f irst error and repeat the test to see if there are any other problems.

Icemaker Diagnostic ( optical indication )

Preparation for the Service Diagnostic: Step 1: Fix the emitter flap with a tape in closed position and close the door. Step 2: Switch of the icemaker on the user board. Step 3 :Open the freezer door. (The technician will then have 60 seconds to open the freezer door.) Step 4: Hold the light switch to simulate a closed door. Step 5: Switch on the icemaker on the user board. Step 6: Listen to the receiver LED output code. (After opening the freezer door, the technician has 2 seconds to see the code.)

LED output failure indication:

2 flashes, 1 second off , 2 flashes again: Indicates an optical problem Solution: Change the IR Receiver

3 flashes, 1 second off , 3 flashes again: Indicates an icemaker fault Solution: Change the icemaker

4 flashes, 1 second off , 4 flashes again: Indicates an defect relay Solution: Change the IR Receiver

If the LED is solid on for min. 5 seconds, everything is correct working.

Note : If the system detects more then one error code, you will see the first error code. Then you have to fix the first fault and repeat the test, to see if there exist any other problem.

24

Troubleshooting & Diagnostic:

The appliance does not cool at all

Reason:

The thermo - fuse is open.

At every plug in, the product starts with the defrost phase and if the fuse or the defrost-heater is in open circuit condition, the appliance remains in that state. Procedure how to check ,if the thermo - fuse is good: 1. Unplug the appliance 2. Remove the rear panel 3. Open the main control board box 4. Disconnect only the 12-pole connector. With a multimeter check the ohm value between the two following points: Blue wire ( Pin 1 ) of the 12-pole connector (disconnected) and brown wire ( Pin 1 )of the 16-pole connector (connected). Between the two points we have to found the ohm value of the defrost-heater ( 83-94 ). If the result is open circuit, that means the thermo fuse is defect or there exist a bad connection or a wire problem. Than you must check the connectors and the wires

12-pole connector Pin 1 blue cable.

16-pole connector Pin 1 brown cable.

Resistant value must be between 83 and 94 !

Troubleshooting & Diagnostic:

Ice water presence all around the ice maker.

Check if water drops out from the water out coming tube ( top ) for the ice maker.

Check if there will be taken too much water quantity every cycle.

In this case, the valve does not close Complete by particle like rost etc. Therefore you have to change the valve.

If yes, follow the instruction bellow to adjust the water quantity filling.

Water fill adjustment The quantity of water is time regulated and is serial adjusted to 7,5 seconds, that estimates 125 ccm water.

When the small hole is centred in the larger hole (see picture 1) the water fill adjustment is for 7,5 seconds fill time (normal). Turning the water level adjustment screw (see picture 2) moves the contact in relation to the contact ring segment (see picture 3). Turning the screw clockwise = decreases water filling Turning the screw counter-clockwise = increases water filling A complete rotation (360) effects a filling of 40 cm water (~ 2,4 sec.) A half rotation (180) effects a filling of 20 cm water(~ 1,2 sec.)

Note : Only one rotation is possible. Further adjustment could damage the module ! If the adjustment screw falls out, just put it back in and align the hole in the sight hole as shown in picture 1.
37

Troubleshooting & Diagnostic:

Ice formation on the freezer bottom. Reason: The membrane on the outcoming tube to the drip tray is loosing ( falling down ). In this case warm air with humidity enter into the freezer compartment and cause the ice formation.

Check the correct position of the membrane, as shown in the picture below.

39

Troubleshooting & Diagnostic:

Temperature in the fridge compartment too warm.

Reason: Wrong position of the Bimetal - and Safty thermostat, placed on the evaporator in the freezer compartment. If the surface is looking to the evaporator ( down ), the defrost cycle is too short and not complete finished. Therefore we have the risk of compl. ice formation on the evaporator ( isolate ). That means not enough cold air is coming to the fridge compartment.

The picture below, shows you the correct position of it. To avoid a rotation of this part, fix the cable of it with wire stripes.

Fix the cable at this place.

40

Troubleshooting & Diagnostic:

Temperature in the fridge compartment too warm ( only LCD version ). Reason : Air leakage in the rear side of the multi flow channel. The adhesive tape does not close the channel of the sensor complete. In this case we have a direct air circulation between the both air channels left and right side to the sensor channel. ( see the picture below ).

Air channel

Leakage area

To solve the problem, close the sensor channel with a adeshive tabe around the corners, see picture.
