CHAPTER THREE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Design This research used the correctional design, for this research determined relationship between variables of a list of research or to test hypothesis regarding expected relationships. In this research there were two variable. First, its the variable X or the independent variable that was students mastering part of speech focus in Noun, Second, its the variable Y or the dependent variable that was students ability in mastering writing descriptive paragraph.

B. Population and Sample 1. Population Population in this research has specialized meaning, it is whole research subject1. Sugiono states that the population defined on the object and the subject, both of them have quality and characteristic and population is not only a number of object and subject but also their characteristics2. The population of this research is that all of the second years students of SMP Negeri 3 Lhokseumawe . They are 105 students of three group learning. 2. Sample The researcher determined the representatives of the population. Arikuntoconfirms that are some ways to determine the sample if the research has several

hundred subject in the population, they can be determined about 26%-30% from all amount of the subject3. To determine the sample, the researcher selects them by using random sampling. The sample is taken by using lottery technique. They were 30 students.

C. Research Procedure This research is designed through test as the procedure by papering of the result value X and Y. Data X is students mastering part of speech focus in Noun, and data Y is the students mastering writing descriptive paragraph. The scoring of descriptive writing test in this research is base on the same criteria considered. D. Data Collection Technique To get the data the writer used a technique that is test, the writer tested sample and it is divided into essay and multiple choice test, because the writer wanted to find out the students mastering part of speech focus in Noun, verb, adverb, adjective and writing descriptive paragraph. E. Research Instrument In this research, the writer used test as the instrument of collecting the data. Test is a set a questions that given to the students to know their ability in answering the questions about Noun, verb, adjective, adverb and writing descriptive paragraph

Table 3.1 The standart criterion is used in scoring of composition can be seen as the following table. Good to average; adequate range-occasional errors of words/idiom form, choice, usage but meaning not obscured. Fair to poor; limited range-frequent errors of word/idiom form, choice, usage, etc. Very poor; essential translation-little knowledge of English vocabulary. Excellent to very good; effective complex construction- etc. Good to average; effective but simple construction Fair to poor; major problem in simple construction Very poor; virtually no mastery of sentence construction rules-etc.

Excellent to very good; demonstrate mastery of convention. Good to average; occasional errors of spelling, punctuation etc. Fair to poor; frequent errors of spelling, punctuation, capitalization-etc. Very poor; no mastery of conventiondominated by errors of spelling, punctuation, capitalization- etc4.

The writer decided test in two categories, they are: 1. The writer tested the students mastering in part of speech focus in Noun. In this test, the writer will provide 20 questions and all of them in choice.
2. The writer tested the students ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The writer provides 5 people picture to be described by the students and all of them in essay.

F. Data Analysis Technique After collecting the data, the writer used the formula for the correlation study is correlation product moment formula. According to sujana that the formula of correlation product moment is such as below: * Where: index score of correlation between X variable and Y variable

( )( ) ( ) +* ( ) +

total score of X variable total score of Y variable number of cases5

The formula is used for finding the correlation coefficient. When two variable are correlated each other, the result is a correlation coefficient. The degree of relationship between two variable usually is indicated by correlation coefficient between -0,00 up to +1,00. To determine the statistical significance it must be consulted to a table that tells how large coefficient needs with given probability level and given the size of sample.
