godspeed on the

ur Interview with guitarist the album. I didnt have any concept to write to. Paul Allender.
So Dani wrote the lyrics after the music? Yeah; I always write the music first, and then he puts the lyrics to the music basically. Lets talk about when you left the

Whats the reaction to Godspeed been like? Its gone really well actually to be honest. Ive done the album like that just for selfish reasons. What are the reasons? I wanted to play fast live (laughs) - thats purely the only reason to be honest. So who came up with the concept for this whole thing? Its Dani who came up with the concept for it, but he came up with it by the time I was done with

Cradle Of Filth

for their boots... Whats it like being in a band which has reached such a high level of success? To be honest I dont actually pay attention to anything thats going on around me. Im too locked up in just writing music and I dont really pay attention to how big the bands getting or what the bands doing on the outside. I dont pay attention to record sales or chart positions. All I wanna do is just write the stuff. Tell us once and for all where (if anywhere) Cradle of Filth ties in with Black Metal... Well the only tie weve got with Black Metal is some of the orchestral atmospheres. Weve always liked the makeup on stage, because its a thearical thing, which has bugger all to do with the music. I suppose if you looked at us you would get an idea of the sort of music we were playing. But weve toned it down and made it a bit more... accessible?... is that the word? (laughs) I suppose youre very happy with the voice of Dani Filth... hes one of a kind, isnt he?

band. What happened there? I just wasnt down with the politics. There was too many egos floating around. Like? Im not going into details (laughs). Ok; fair enough... I just didnt agree with some stuff to be honest. People were getting too big

Yeah, it works, yknow? To be honest, sometimes Ive gone Aw God Dani, thats really bad; you cant do that (laughs) but yeah it really does work. How often are you able to talk Dani out of something he wants to do? Just as much as he can with me (laughs). You obviously wanted to play fast on this latest record; whats the next idea? The next ones gonna be faster (laughs). I wanna make it a bit more intricate; actually have the guitars as part of the orchestration instead of the orchestra just sitting on the guitars, yknow? You got any concepts for the future? I dont know unless Dani decides to put one in at the last minute again. So I guess youll be quite busy for the forseeable future? Yep, weve got that to do, weve got a video shoot to do, weve got a few festivals to do, and Im actually thinking of getting into some producing and stuff as well...

Your final message to the NZ fans who missed out on seeing you this time around unless they skipped over to Aussie... Yeah; were gonna try and get over to you soon we do hope. Thanks for your support, and if it wasnt for you guys we wouldnt be doing what were doing now. g

BRUCE KULICK LO

So you will be in Australia very soon for some clinics. In the past your clinics have been described as a mind-blowing and interactive musical experience - so please tell us a little about what will be going on there! I love that description! I just have a great time with my fans, playing and sharing my thoughts on my career. It is not an overly technical type of class. I keep it loose and funny.

N GOO G KISS DNIG HT

So Youre very busy working with Grand Funk Railroad as well as putting out your solo stuff, ESP, numerous guest appearances and much more. Surely you have conflicting schedules here and there. Have there ever been any difficult decisions to make due to split commitments? YES... and I am blessed that I have to even figure that out, but I have been fortunate to work those things out. A few questions regarding KISS... Its always been very strange to me that a band which was functioning so well in the early nineties, releasing arguably the greatest albums in their catalogue

How many times have you visited Australia now? And have you ever had the chance to make the extra jump to us over here in New Zealand? I guess about 10 times... only a stop over in NZ. That sucks!

(I refer in particular to Revenge) would make the decision to get nostalgic and change direction in a major way by reuniting with former members who they always felt let them down. How did Eric Singer and yourself see things back then as they unfolded, at what point did you decide to leave, and what was the strangest part of this whole retro-shuffle to you? The reunion was huge, and they knew it would be... they paid Eric and I for a year, and then of course it was over. I didnt really leave it was a forced retirement, and who can blame them. The opportunity was too huge for them not to reunite with Ace and Peter and Bruce Kulick do makeup. The fans know the REVENGE era was another classic KISS line up and sound. After the relationships with the original members fell to bits again, what prevented the band from reassembling right back into the former solid lineup with

Eric Singer and yourself? Even Eric was a yo-yo going in to help and them Peter back in. Strange. Tommy who can fill Aces shoes as he even was in a terrific tribute band as Ace, was ALWAYS in the wings just in case. And there were some shows, private etc, and a TV thing where Tommy had to do it. Made perfect sense for them to ask Tommy to just play the spaceman. Since you have stopped working as a permanent band member for KISS you have appeared on both Gene Simmons and Paul Stanleys most recent solo efforts (as well as Psycho Circus). Firstly, can you explain what it was like to go back and work with these guys? And secondly, what are your thoughts on the overall musical quality of each of these solo albums? I get along great with them, and know how to work with them. I loved both solo discs in their own way. And of course I had the fortune to get Gene to appear on my solo disc

BK3. What are the main differences between being in Grand Funk Railroad vs. being in KISS? KISS is more hard rock, and GFR more classic rock. Both great music but a bit different in genre. KISS has to be over the top, and GFR can play a concert or a casino. My role is just to kick ass on guitar! So not much of a difference! Will you be working with John Corabi and making any more Union releases in the future? I am working with him now in a project called MONSTER CIRCUS. Visit my site for info on that. www. kulick.net. John appears on my solo disc BK3, and we just came back from a European tour with ESP together. (Eric Singer Project). No UNION plans for now.. but we are proud of the music. Tell us about the upcoming solo album BK... and for those people who havent had a chance to check out your solo work, is this guitar virtuoso stuff like Satriani and Vai albums, or is the album made up of more traditional songs with lyrics/ singing etc.? Great songs, players, only one instrumental featuring Steve Lukather from TOTO... lots of cool guests and it is a really big step

up for me in sound and vibe. I am really proud of it. Even Genes son Nick makes a vocal and songwriting appearance for me on BK3! Do you still have any of the uberglam outfits from 80s era KISS (Asylum, Lick It Up) lying around? Any memories of the big hair n makeup days come to mind? NO! They were left in the warehouse... yikes! The pix and memories are priceless. Thanks for the interview. Any final comments for your fans in NZ? Sorry I havent made it there, but there is talk to come do some touring in your country. Have to visit the LOTR movie sets! LOL! g

ALBUM REVIEWS

This is the album of the year for me so far, hands down. It is totally unique. No other artist in Metal explores and experiments with sound so bravely, unashamedly, and successfully. Ki is Devin Townsends tenth album, and the first of a new four-part series. Apparently based on self control and sobriety, this piece is a quiet, easy listening experience of amazing, mulit-layered musical depth. Normally I try to recommend a stand-out song during a review. In this case I cannot, because from start to finish, this record is a highlight. mmmmmmmmmm

PERVERTOR Metallic Possession 2009 Unsigned Review by Brendon Williams

I opened this 3 song demo to find a piece of photocopied paper with an angry dudes face on it, and a CDR from Dick Smith Electronics. I initially thought haha what the fuck? These fellas obviously dont give a shit! Then I listened to the CD, and got what it was all about. If Pervertor presented their music with a nice, professional CD and glossy colour booklet it would be completely out of place. This music is gritty, unpleasant, and nasty. And thats exactly how it should be delivered. Matter of fact, the band should be there in person to piss on your fence as you pull the CD out of your mailbox. Top stuff, and a band to watch out for. mmmmmmmmww

PARIAH Humanageddon 2008 Unsigned Review by Brendon Williams

Never heard of these fellas before. They have managed to get a nice recorded sound, and the structures are quite cool. The guitarwork is choice (got that Zakk Wylde thing happening haha). Deathwish is my favorite song on the EP, with a lot of the old school Heavy Metal feeling to it. I could hear sound elements of Judas Priest, Pantera, Sepultura and Ozzy Osbourne in that one. 123456 Skulls, Skulls! mmmmmmwwww

KREATOR Hordes of Chaos 2009 Steamhammer/SPV Review by Max Thrasher

Kreator is one of the bands that guarantee quality. And if excellent Thrash Metal is what youre looking for look no further. Hordes continue the line of great releases, melodic, yet heavy and gut-ripping music youre ought to love if you love Metal. Just like on 2005s Enemy of God, you can hear references to Slayer, which is rather surprising, since Kreator always had their own established and unique style and have no need to borrow from anyone. But if anything, it only helps the album to pack more punch. Great stuff. Dont miss it! mmmmmmmmmw

CANDLEMASS Death Magic Doom 2009 Nuclear Blast Review by Max Thrasher
Doom Metal fans have a reason to rejoice (if fans of this morbid genre are capable of positive feelings). The new Candlemass is here! And just like in case with previous two albums, you get double for your buck the famous Candlemass sound AND the voice of Robert Lowe from another classic Doom band, Solitude Aeturnus. Kicking off with fast If I Ever Die the album later dives into slow, heavy tracks like Hammer of Doom, The Bleeding Baroness and mesmerizing House of Thousand Voices. All in all another convincing release, perfect for our cold, dark and rainy winter, and everything youve come to expect from these guys. mmmmmmmmww

QUEENSRYCHE American Soldier 2009 Rhino Review by Max Thrasher

Everyone who knows me, knows I love this band. Theres something about their brand of cloudy, rainy Progressive that just grabs you. Here we have another concept album, very personal and as always, very political, but I have to admit that ever since the departure of Chris DeGarmo things just havent been the same. Some great tracks here, like At 30.000 Feet, Hundred Mile Stare and Middle of Hell, but also some stuff that I could do without (Man Down! and The Killer). Im sure old Ryche fans will dig most of it, but I have to say that if youre new to this band, youre better off starting with their classic albums, like Operation: Mindcrime and Empire. mmmmmmwwww

your band, tell us a little of the history and sound. Describing your own band is always the hardest thing, I guess Musicly brutal with a verity of vocal stylings, Weve been around since 2005, Jase (Drummer) and I came out of the band Attica and found Darrin (Vocals) and Tonie (Bass) and that was that. What are some of the main inflences in the band? Our influences come from everywhere really, Thats one of the great things about metal, everything works. Whats next for Fuelset after the tour is complete? We have a few more videos to come out from Tear it Down, Then were in the studio again and want to get down the South Island too. Thanks for the interview. Anything else youd like to mention? Cheers Mate, Just to come see us live and Check us out on the web www.fuelset.net or www.myspace. com/fuelsetmusic. g

ur chat with guitarist Joe Murdie from NZs own Fuelset.

So you guys are in the middle of a nationwide tour. Is it living up to your expectations so far? Yea has been really good so far, looking forward to the rest. What is one of the tour highlights at this point? This tour was our first time in Whangarei and it was brutal as up there so that was cool, and the guys from the Zone bar look after you too. In your experience, where is the best crowd to play Metal for, and why? Theres still a lot of places we have to get to but Wellington is great, the crowd down there really get into it and have a good time. How has the reaction been to your album Tear It Down? So far really good, were having people yell out requests while were on stage, I think thats one of the best things about an album, people really get to know your music well. For people who are unaware of

PLATFORMS: ARCADE, PS3, XBOX 360, MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Review by Brendon Williams

knew this was going to kick ass the first time I saw the screenshots. Street Fighter 2 is probably the most famous arcade game ever (besides maybe PacMan!) so most people, especially those in their late 20s - early 30s remember pumping hundreds of dollars into playing it, and have loads of fond memories.

So the coolest thing about SF4 is that it takes everything that was right with SF2 and adds a whole bunch of new stuff which compliments the original ideas. Its still 2D, but the Ultra Combos add a 3D edge. It is as visually stunning as it is playable, and the online mode is awesome. Check it out. SHORYUKEN! mmmmmmmmmm

DVD REVIEW
SUMMARY by Mark Logan

hree wild women in three fast cars take time off from stripping in clubs to go on a murder rampage. They kidnap and drug the girlfriend of one of their victims and hole up at a secluded ranch owned by a wheelchair-bound man and his two sons. REVIEW by Brendon Williams Possibly Russ Meyers most famous movie (and the one many consider to be his best), Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is a work of art. Starring one of the toughest women Ive ever seen on film in the character of Varla (played and co-created by Tura Satana), FPKK contains a busload of entertaining moments, which

still have the ability to move (and often shock) audiences today. Russ Meyer once said that a movie has everything when it contains speed (faster), sex (pussycat) and violence (kill, kill). After seeing this, its hard not to agree. For a movie made in 1965, to say that FPKK pushed some boundaries is a massive understatement. I recommend that all late-night movie fans take in this film, and also a few more of Russ Meyers greats, such as the Vixen trilogy. You sure as hell wont find them boring; in fact theyre bound to expose you to a whole new world of B-grade cinema! mmmmmmmmww

ustralian Karnivools bassist Jon Stockman on the new album and a bunch of other stuff! First of all, how are you feeling now that the new album, Sound Awake is out? Has the reaction been as you expected so far? We are all extremely grateful to not have the pressure that surrounded the whole process and we are really looking forward to the upcoming touring cycle thats in store. Its been a long time since weve been able to relax so were all milking that privilege! We expected people to take a while to really get into the material on the record and most of the reactions have been very consistent with that. Were getting a lot of comments from people that have said on their fourth or fifth listens that theyre really starting to get it and hear a lot more than they did on the first listen. We werent completely sure how the songs were going to be received, whether our fans were going to get where we were going with this one or not, but we did expect that it would throw a lot of people off if they expect a Themata part 2. As it turns out, we have had some of the material polarise the fan base, particularly Set Fire to the Hive. But thats exactly what we wanted that song to do, we threw a spanner in the gears and we

did it because to a degree, we are unpredictable and spontaneous and well always keep trying new things. The most important feature of that song for us wasnt the music but the lyrics and it made sense to us to have them transmitted across in the most accessible way possible. For those who have not heard Sound Awake yet, where are the major differences in direction and/ or sound (if any) compared to your debut album? If you want to compare their ease of digestion, think of the digestive timeframe of normal stomach compared to that of Sarlaccs Pit off Return of the Jedi (except it wont take 1000 years !). Thats an exaggeration, but we have said that Themata was all about hooks and Sound Awake is all about lures. Karnivool appear to have a very passionate fanbase, especially in Australia itself. Is it very common nowadays for the Australian audience to embrace local bands? And when did you first realise that your band was a rising force in Australias rock music scene? Yeah we are extremely lucky to have the fans that we have, they are very loyal and extremely supportive. Its pretty common for Australian audiences to support home-grown talent, any festival

that has an exclusive Australian lineup will always sell out. Were lucky, though, in the fact that our following is an underground one, and this means that they arent as fickle when it comes to their support of us. Its quite common for bands in Australia to receive commercial success and then disappear completely. Weve never had a commercial hit and I dont think wed care if that didnt change. What has been inspiring/affecting you lately, and at what level do events in your life influence your songwriting and musical performances? Anything that we experience is always transcended through our music, whether deliberately or subconsciously. This might not always seem obvious and at other times it is very blatant. Set Fire to The Hive was a reaction to the world political climate and its pretty in your face as to what its about. A lot of us do a fair bit of reading as well, so sometimes a bit of that makes its way

into whatever themes might surround a song. The last song Change has a lot of references to a phenomenon known as cymatics, which looks at the patterns that are formed from sound. Were trying to incorporate some of that into a live show that were building at the moment for our upcoming tour. Any plans to tour NZ in support of this album? Not at this stage although we would love to get there as soon as possible! There is some talk of possibly visiting this year but nothing has been confirmed yet. Thanks for the interview. Any final comments to your fans in New Zealand? No worries! We would like to add that well definitely get over to NZ at some stage and we cant wait to, its something weve all been pushing for, for a long time! g
