ABSTRACT The purpose of this report is to highlight and explain what I did and learnt during my internship period at Kyambogo University Library. It is also a requirement for the partial fulfillment of a bachelors degree of Library and Information Science internship/practicum program of Makerere University. Furthermore, elaborates the assignments handled, special projects undertaken, working environment, purpose of the work undertaken, successes and short comings that the intern encountered when accomplishing the various tasks which were assigned by the supervisors. Conclusion and recommendations are noted in respect to the outcome and it is hoped that this report would serve as a cardinal vehicle to the improvement of the internship program and a liaison between the host institution and Makerere University.

CHAPTER ONE 1.0

Introduction Internship refers to a system of on job training

for white collar jobs. This is where students are given chance to familiarize with various work activities, experiences and ethics as per defined professions and work environments. It provides opportunities for students to gain work related experience in their field of study with the view of developing their careers, creating a network of contacts, or gain school credit. On the side of employers internship provides free labor and easy avenues to scout potential employees. It is a full time work experience closely aligned with the students major and arranged with an employer who believes it is desirable to aid in the training and education of the student. Usually takes a short duration of two to three months. The employer agrees to provide the intern with a progressive educational experience through direct personal contact hours or through a

training program and to aid the intern in developing a summary report of his/ her experience. 1.1 Brief history of Kyambogo University and type of organization KYU was established in 2001 under the "Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001", as a public university by merging Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE). (Number of staff employed, physical location, etc) ... I chose KYU because of its longtime legacy in imparting practical knowledge and skills. In this information and communication technology age there is a scramble for resources which calls for persons who can exhibit practical skills in all aspects. The proliferation of computers and the advent of the internet make it ideal and a better initiative in the information age. My dream is to be part of the change of the trend of information dissemination from manual to virtual means by digitizing the library and its contents. I am happy to work and associate with KYU library which has provisions 1.2 for the digital KYU library operations. Structure

Organizational

1.2.1

Kyambogo University Library Is made up of three branches which

include the main center which is located on the East End commonly known as Barclays Library, west end Library located on West End of the University, Special Needs and Rehabilitation Faculty known as Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation education Library (FSN&RL) and the Education Library based in the faculty of education. 1.2.2 Library Vision To be a leading provider of research information in education, Mission To facilitate the acquisition and General Shelving and dusting I was science, technology and humanities. 1.2.3 research. advancement of knowledge and skills through the provision of information, teaching and nervous to start bench work on the very first day I arrived at Kyambogo University Library. After orientation, I began work on the general shelving of Book materials by arranging and organizing books basing on their class numbers to create order and sanity. Books on the upper wing of Barclays Library appeared to be disorganized, mixed up, dusty and every thing appeared to be in a mess. Though the activity involved just shelving of books to their destined locations, this created a healthy environment as order was maintained. To ensure immediate safety of books, the shelves had to be cleaned

9 9

to erase the dusty substance that covered the whole stacks including the books. This section is located to a nearby road hence Susceptible to too much dust and dirt from the moving vehicles. The cleaning exercise was done using hard water and the provided rags though disinfectant liquid would have been used. The exercise went on smoothly though repercussions of being tedious and time consuming cannot go without mention. 1.3.2 Shelf Reading After getting jig with the general shelving exercise, the next activity was to shelf read the book materials on the shelves. This involved the logical shelving and arrangement of books basing on their class numbers and within the same class following the authors alphabet. Prior to the above mentioned activity, these ensured mechanized arrangement and order in that all items on the same subject and class of different authors together paving way for easy location and use of books by the clients. .. 1.3.3 Stocktaking As the next assigned activity to fall victim, this process involved the physical counting of books following book materials contained on the shelves together with the provided shelf lists. Sincerely speaking, the exercise seemed to be simple though tentatively taken to be tedious as it requires ones concentration and being keen when counting the number of book titles contained in the collection. The presence of a moderate number of staff available in place, the prior shelving and shelf reading of book materials presumably guaranteed that this process would be a walkover, but due to unavoidable circumstances such as: meager tools required in the process, commitment and support from staff-because many seemed to be bothered, incomplete lists of titles contained in the database and combination of other factors almost slowed and failed the activity. With that mentioned, options had to be thought of to rekindle the activity. After gaining support, gunning down the necessary tools and equipment required like: spine labels, book cards and book pockets, sole tape, nameplates, and a like, this exercise went on smoothly. This had to consume some of the agreeable time due to a number of anomalies identified, including : reclassification, binding, fixing and placing nameplates and book pockets, book cards and so on , some bit of cataloguing as it was observed that some book materials were accorded wrong access points carelessly. Working on stock taking and all the necessary book processing activities can be categorized as rigorous but fun and professionally essential, because it not only gave me chance to professionalize with the act and also get experience but a right way of getting to know what the whole collection is contained of. Individual tasks I am overwhelmingly happy to be part and have initiated the trend of incorporating technology into Library services that

9 9

is, Library 2.0 and its designing and use by Library clients. On a personal note and observation, Kyambogo University library users were missing out on opportunities concerning technology and Library usage. This however put them in the scenario where there were no earmarked chances of interaction with the Library staff concerning matters of Library and service delivery beyond campus parameters most especially those working or in need of Library services have had tough times! Kyambogo University is affiliated with a number of Teacher Teaching colleges which are not rich in resources. The information environment within which libraries find themselves is changing, probably faster than ever before. These changes offer great opportunities for progressive libraries to reach out far beyond the boundaries of their buildings and web sites, and to engage with an increasingly literate body of information consumers. Library 2.0 is destined to be a concept of a very different library service, geared towards the needs and expectations of todays Kyambogo University Library users. In this vision, the library staff will have to make information available wherever and whenever the user requires it, and seeks to ensure that barriers to use and reuse are removed. Sine the Library offers Internet services, all this can be accessed on the uniform resource of the locator, internship http://kyambogouniversitylibrary.blogspot.com Application of the course units learnt in the field.
