er all questions on these sheets in the space provided (use reverse side if necessary) 1.) What is meant in a thermodynamic sense when we call a process dynamic

(5 Points) 2.) Write the first law of thermodynamics for an open system containing a movable boundary and for the most general case where the flow varies over the various entrance or exit regions.

(5 Points) 3.) Describe the conditions under which the energy transfer to a system through a resistance heater can be described as either work or heat

(5 Points)

Please do not guess; the number of incorrect answers will be subtracted from the number correct to determine your score. (5 Points) a) The steady flow assumption means that dECV/dt = 0. b) Both heat and work are state variables. c) A substance can not exist as a liquid at a pressure below the triple point T d) For water the diagram below is a temperature-specific volume diagram T F F T T F F

v e) A quasi-static process is not always reversible T F

5.) Using the definition of enthalpy, h and the definitions of the specific heats at constant pressure and constant volume (i.e. how they are related to u and h), write the relation between cp, cv and R for an ideal gas. (5 Points)

State all assumptions. (45 Points) Hot water is to be supplied to operate a steam turbine at 1.5 MPa and 180C. It is throttled into a flash evaporator which forms liquid and vapor at 400 kPa. The liquid is discarded through a drain while the saturated vapor feeds the turbine. The exhaust stream from the turbine exits at 10 kPa and 90% quality. If the turbine is to produce 1 MW, what is the inlet mass flow of hot water in kilograms per hour.

Name___________________ ME 601 Engineering Thermodynamics Quiz 1 22 February 2010 2.) (30 points) Consider the situation in the processing of a metal depicted in Figure 2. A charge of liquid material (fixed amount) is placed into the charging vat and allowed to flow through the system. As the level decreases, the material flows through the piping and is heated along the way to a mixing vat where a stirring arm rotates to prevent component separation. The material then flows into a solidification zone where it attains a solid state. The material now in solid form (though still very soft) enters a set of rollers where it is rolled to half of its original thickness but does not change in width. The pressure exerted by the roller is required to keep the roller stationary. Please answer each of the following questions assuming the liquid metal is the system. Assume the liquid metal is incompressible and that the roller on the end of the line compresses the metal to half of its original thickness. Assume, for the purposes of this analysis that the kinetic energy of the system is negligible. Charging Vat p0 = 101 [kPa] T = 50 N-m 600 rpm pR = 500 [MPa] z0 = 3 [m]

a.) Identify each work mode (if any) that IS quasi-static and reversible and either evaluate it or describe how it should be evaluated (i.e. what data do you need beyond what was provided to evaluate it.) b.) Identify each work mode (if any) which IS NOT quasi-static and reversible and either evaluate it or describe how it should be evaluated (i.e. what data do you need beyond what was provided to evaluate it.) c.) Write the first law of thermodynamics for this system using as much data as was provided and symbols for any additional data you feel is missing. please make sure the units are consistent!
