The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Ronald Neame / UK 1969 / cert U
Friday 30 December 3.45pm
Sunday 1 January 6.30pm
The Oscar-winning classic is set in a
private school in 1930s Edinburgh,
where Maggie Smiths headstrong
young teacher ignores the curriculum
and influences her impressionable 12
year old charges with her over-
romanticized world view.
One Day
Lone Scherfig / USA 2011 / cert 12A
Friday 30 December 1.20pm
Saturday 31 December 6.30pm
After one night together 15 July
1988, the day they both graduate from
Edinburgh University Emma and
Dexter begin a friendship that will last
a lifetime. She is a working-class girl
of principle and ambition who dreams
of making the world a better place; he
is a wealthy charmer who dreams that
the world will be his playground.
The Battle of the Sexes
Charles Crichton / UK 1959 / cert U
Friday 30 December 6.30pm
Saturday 31 December 3.45pm
A delightful Ealing-style comedy set in
Edinburgh. Mr Martin (Peter Sellers)
works as an accountant for a textile
company owned by Mr Macpherson
(Robert Morley). A quiet and nervous
man, he keeps himself to himself and
wishes to be left alone. But then
Angela Barrows (Constance
Cummings), an American Efficiency
Expert, arrives to evaluate his
performance...
The 39 Steps
Alfred Hitchcock / UK 1935 / cert U
Friday 30 December 8.45pm
Saturday 31 December 1.30pm
Other English Hitchcocks may be
more provocative, but few offer such
a ripping good yarn. Richard Hannay
flees from London in pursuit of a spy
ring, responsible for leaving a
murdered woman in his flat; the police
inevitably take him for the murderer,
and the spies are after him too...
Great fun. A bit of a cheeky inclusion
in an Edinburgh-set film season, but
watch out for our iconic rail bridge.
Trainspotting
Danny Boyle / UK 1996 / Cert 18
Saturday 31 December 7pm
Sunday 1 January 1.30pm
A shocking, painfully subjective trawl
through the Edinburgh heroin culture
of the 1980s, Irvine Welsh's cult novel
was hardly an obvious choice for the
team who made Shallow Grave, yet
the film's a triumph. Audaciously
punching up the pitch-black comedy,
juggling parallel character strands
and juxtaposing image, music and
voice-over with a virtuosity worthy of
Scorsese on peak form.
