SAFETYASAMANAGEMENTFUNCTION
Theprimaryroleofafleetsafetyprogramistoreducemotorvehicleaccidentsandprotectemployees. Safetyshouldbeconsideredanessentialcomponentofeverymotorvehiclefleet,regardlessofvehiclesizeor type. Safetymustnotsimplybesomethingthatisdonewhenitisconvenient.Safetymustbeacompanyvalue. Fleetswithoutsafetyprogramsplacethemselvesinfinancialjeopardyandarelikelyoutofcompliancewith local,stateandfederalrules. Inaddition,fleetsafetyisasocialresponsibility.Companydriversandvehiclesareinteractingwiththe motoringpublic.Thesafetyofthevehiclesinyourcompanysfleetdirectlyaffectsotherdriversonthe highway. Every12minutessomeonediesinamotorvehiclecrash. Every10secondsaninjuryoccurs,andevery5secondsacrashoccurs. In2006,onepersonwaskilledorinjuredinatrafficcrashevery8.3minutesintheStateof Missouri. InMissouri,167,143accidentsoccurredin2007. In2007,991personswerekilledonMissourihighways. In2006,62,078wereinjuredintrafficcrashesintheStateofMissouri.

AtMissouriEmployersMutual,theaveragecostofanonfatalityvehicleaccidentis$31,000. AtMissouriEmployersMutualtheaveragecostofaFATALvehicleaccidentis$468,000. Fordriversinvolvedintrafficcrashesnotkilledorinjured,96.6%werewearingtheirseatbelt atthetimeofthecrash. Adriverina2006Missouritrafficcrashhada1in4chanceofbeinginjurediftheywerenot wearingtheirseatbelt. However,iftheywerewearingaseatbelttheirchancesofbeinginjuredinthecrashwere 1in8. Whenexaminingdriverdeaths,thedifferencesaremuchmoredramatic. Adriverina2006Missouritrafficcrashhada1in31chanceofbeingkillediftheywerenot wearingaseatbelt. Itisthepolicyofthiscompanythatthecompanyvehiclesprovidedforemployeesbeusedonlyforcompany business. Any personal use of the company vehicles is to be made in writing, or noted phone conversations with companyexecutiveofficers,statingthenatureofeachpersonaluse. Thesafetyofouremployees,whethertheyaredrivingacompanyvehicleortheirownvehicle,isourutmost priority. Allemployeesshouldadheretothefollowingsafetyrules. Eachemployeemusthaveavalidstatedriverslicense.Thecompanyemployeeisresponsiblefor knowingandcomplyingwithallfederal,state,countyandlocaldrivinglaws. Theuseofacompanyvehiclewhileundertheinfluenceofintoxicantsandotherdrugsthatcould impairdrivingabilityisforbidden.Thisbehaviorissufficientcausefordiscipline,uptoandincluding terminationofemployment. Nodrivershalloperateacompanyvehiclewhentheabilitytodososafelyhasbeenimpairedbyillness, fatigue,injury,consumptionofalcoholorprescriptionmedication. DefensiveDrivingGuidelines

Driversarerequiredtomaintainasafefollowingdistanceatalltimes.Driversshouldkeepathree secondintervalbetweentheirvehicleandthevehicleimmediatelyahead.Duringslipperyroad conditions,thedistanceshouldbedoubledormore. Driversmustyieldtherightofwayatalltrafficsignals,emergencyvehiclesandsigns.Driversshould alsobepreparedtoyieldforsafetyssakeatanytime.Pedestriansandbicyclesintheroadwayalways havetherightofway. Driversmusthonorpostedspeedlimits.Inadversedrivingconditions,reducespeedtoasafeoperating speedthatisconsistentwiththeconditionsoftheroad,weather,lightingandvolumeoftraffic.Tires canhydroplaneonwetpavementatspeedsaslowas40mph. Radardetectorsareprohibitedincompanyvehicles. Turnsignalsmustbeusedtoshowwhereyouareheadingwhilegoingintotrafficandbeforeevery turnorlanechange.
