If theres one season thats guaranteed to showcase the Sunshine Coast to its absolute best, its summer. The warm, balmy weather pushes the mercury skywards and creates the perfect platform from which to explore our little corner of the world. It truly is the definition of bliss, especially a walk along the shallows as waves race in to wet your toes. But if you think were just about beaches, you couldnt be more wrong. Theres so much to do across the Coast and hinterland youll need to book a return holiday to have a hope of tackling it all. You can strap on your hiking shoes and tackle some of Australias most beautiful mountains, national parks and hinterland tracks, eat your way up and down a gourmet precinct such as Hastings St or spend a day exploring lush gardens. You can cast in a line to catch a feed or jump into a kayak or canoe for a watery perspective on the world. Under, over or away from the water youll never run out of ways to fill your days (and nights). See mooloolabatourism.com.au TUCK INTO SEAFOOD FRESH OFF THE BOAT Mooloolaba Beach stretches through to Pt Cartwright in an area known as The Spit. Its here you can tuck into the freshest local seafood, from fish and chips to our famous Mooloolaba prawns. See mooloolabatourism.com.au CLIMB A MOUNTAIN Two of the best to try are Mt Coolum and Mt Tibrogargan. Mt Coolum offers the Coasts best views up a route that showcases rare plants and animals, perhaps including our fastest animal, the peregrine falcon. The 2.5km route to the summit moves through habitat such as mountain heath vegetation but it

is steep and strenuous, meaning it is only for experienced walkers. WHERE TO GO
EX-HMAS BRISBANE From Mooloolaba About 15 minutes or 9km from Mooloolaba, this former warship is recognised as one of Australias best dive sites. As a fully prepared wreck, divers can explore inside the vessel. Visibility is about 10-20m and divers might come across sea life such as octopii, turtles, eels, sharks, Queensland groper and crayfish. INNER GNEERINGS / MUDJIMBA ISLAND From Mooloolaba Given this area features a large coral reef system, you can expect to find the same kind of marine life as on the Great Barrier Reef. Species you might come across include everything from turtles, Moorish idol fish and clown fish to eagle rays and the occasional grey nurse shark. Other sites to visit from Mooloolaba include The Plateau, which is for more experienced divers, and Castle Rock, which is popular for its turtles. JEW SHOAL From Noosa This site is quick and easy to access along the Noosa River and then 10 minutes into Laguna Bay. Divers can choose from two main sites: the Pin and Caves. Expect lots of wobbegongs and bait fish as well as the occasional manta ray and grey nurse shark. HALLS REEF From Noosa Parallel to North Shore beach, this shallow reef is renowned for schools of pelagic fish such as trevally and mackerel. Divers can also expect to see whiting, wrasse and surgeonfish. Other sites to explore from Noosa include deep water Sunshine Reef and Wolf Rock, a spectacular rock formation 30m below the surface. NOOSA NORTH SHORE This beach stretches almost 70km, from the mouth of the Noosa River right up to Double Island Point. Activities on offer include swimming, paddling, horse riding, beach walking and fishing. Visitors need a permit to drive on the beach and camping is allowed at the beachfront caravan park. NOOSA MAIN BEACH Just a stones throw from the iconic Hastings St precinct, this beach is renowned for its surf and swimming conditions and is popular with locals and visitors alike. One of its drawcards is southerly winds, which create a haven for body surfers and board riders. NOOSA HEADS This Noosa west beach boasts terrific surfing conditions and is a popular locale with Coast surf school instructors, who will often take their students down there to teach them how to catch a wave. It lies at the end of popular Hastings St between the rock groynes. 16 SUMMER

ALEXANDRIA BAY You need to walk through Noosa National Park to reach this unofficial nudist spot. However, since an emergency phone is the only facility on offer, make sure you take your own supplies, especially water. SUNSHINE BEACH

TWIN WATERS BEACH Take a stroll, stretch your legs out or simply enjoy the unspoilt surrounds of this beach. MARCOOLA BEACH

Close to parks, this is a great child and family friendly destination. MAROOCHYDORE BEACH

Popular with families of all ages, this beach enjoys good conditions created by light offshore winds. It is also close to a wide variety of restaurants. SUNRISE, CASTAWAYS AND MARCUS BEACHES This is one of the Coasts quieter spots to relax, stretching more than 10km. It suits people keen to escape the hustle and bustle. PEREGIAN BEACH

One of the Coasts first lifesaving clubs calls this open beach home. The nearby Maroochy River is popular for fishing. ALEXANDRA BEACH

KINGS BEACH

Take a stroll along the boardwalk and make use of picnic areas and beach showers. GOLDEN BEACH This beach is ideal for windsurfing, kayaking, kite surfing and fishing. It also has a great walking path, from which you can watch the sun rise or set without getting your feet wet. NATURE BECKONS
With glorious warm weather, its time for a fling with Mother Nature. Here are a few ideas to explore our waterways and dry land
Walking tracks The Coast caters to all interests and fitness levels. Routes include: Mount Coolum Summit Walk, Mount Coolum National Park. Stretching across 3.2km, this route leads to the top of the 208m volcanic dome, which offers spectacular views of the Coast and hinterland. Not for the feint hearted, it has steep, slippery and rocky sections. Kondalilla Falls, Kondalilla National Park. This track is centred on the beautiful falls, where Skene Creek drops 90m into a rainforest valley. There are two routes a moderate 3.2km rock pools walk or a 4.6km falls circuit. Currimundi Foreshore Reserve. Take a 2.8km journey through areas such as Currimundi Lake and Kathleen McArthur Conservation Park. Noosa National Park, headland section. Close to Hastings St, this park encompasses beautiful natural habitat, rocky coastline and sheltered coves. Five tracks offer something to suit all fitness levels, from the 1km palm grove circuit to a 10.8km return coastal track offering spectacular ocean views. Look out for koalas, dolphins, cockatoos, manta rays and more. Stretching 58km across the lush Blackall Range, it takes in a series of half and fullday walks, which means you can tackle it piecemeal, or in stages. There are camping and comfort facilities available and highlights include waterfalls, native animals, lookouts and national parks. Habitat along the way ranges from warm subtropical rainforest to tall open eucalypt forest. Current offerings cover Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin, each boasting up to 24 sites in a self-paced journey that takes anywhere from one to two hours. Attractions range from the worlds oldest continuously operating silent movie theatre to museums, hotels, private homes and even the site of an old mill. Noosa Trail NeTwork This network has eight trails of varied length and difficulty, suitable for walking, horse riding or mountain biking. They include: Trail 5 this one-way 9km track mainly takes in Tuchekoi National Park with great views of Mt Cooroora and Mt Cooran. Trail 3 stretching 22km oneway from Cooran to Kin Kin, this route goes via Woondum Forest; be warned it is very steep in parts. Trail 8 a great bet for a day trip, this 11km one-way trip wanders in and around Cooroy. There are plenty of top spots right along the Coast to catch a feed or catch and release
Summer is a great time to cast in a line, whether youre an amateur angler or more experienced. Peter Wells from Davos Compleat Angler says lots of trevally are in the Noosa River, especially early morning or late afternoon, in the Woods Bay or at Munna Bridge. He says the best way to tempt them is with live baits, surface lures or gladiator prawns. Summer whiting are in the shallow waters around Munna Point and also towards the river mouth on the incoming, or mainly run-out, tide. Live worms, yabbies and prawns on light tackle are best. 26 SUMMER Peter says this is also a prime time to catch tuna, kingfish and mackerel off the rocks at the Noosa National Park by casting metal lures or floating bait. The annual run of prawns starts in January. Anglers should use a drag or cast net at night along the shallow banks of the river in Noosaville or Tewantin. The run-out tide is more productive for a good feed. Mud crabs and sand crabs are also active at night. Offshore, now is great for pelagic fishing. Sunshine Reef is producing big spaniards, mainly on large troll baits such as garfish, slimy

mackerel and Davos Spanish Special. Also try for coral trout, grassy sweetlip, squire and parrot fish. Inner reefs in Laguna Bay, such as Halls and Jew Shoal, should prove rewarding for sport anglers. Yellowfin and bluefin tuna and spotted mackerel hunt the bait schools and can usually be found on the surface. They respond well to small metal slugs cast across the front of feeding schools. Emma Sestro from Caloundra Fishing World says anglers can find flathead in the deeper holes near the sand flats in the estuaries, mostly on run-out tides. Look for them from the bar entrance/Bulcock Beach through to the area around Caloundra Power Boat Club. In summer, mangrove jacks are active, along with whiting, which can be found moving through Pumicestone Passage, with queenfish in the canals around

Pelican Waters. These canals are also home to decent-size trevally, which are on the move. Emma says mud crabs have already started showing up in numbers while there are tuna, wahoo and marlin offshore. Steve Dingle from Tackleworld Kawana says the Maroochy River has flathead, whiting, cod and trevally, using baits and lures. He advises worms, yabbies and prawns for bait fishermen while lure fishermen can use small soft plastic wrigglers, worms or prawn shapes weighted with jigheads. Best times are early morning, late afternoon and evening. Steve also suggests dropping a line around the Twin Waters side of the mouth for flathead and trevally, and Picnic Point and Chambers Island for whiting, flathead and cod. Further south at the Mooloolah River, anglers can target the mouth

in search of trevally, bream and flathead. But the tidal flow in this area can be quite strong, so you may need heavier sinkers. The rock wall is great to fish early morning and late afternoon on the run-in and run-out tides. Further up river there are a lot of bridges and small riverside parks to try. Fishing around the bridges can land large trevally and mangrove jacks at night. Live baiting is very effective, especially in the evening. Sites include Cooloolabin Dam, Lake Macdonald, Baroon Pocket Dam/Lake Baroon, Borumba Dam/Lake Borumba and Ewen Maddock Dam. Species range from bass, saratoga and yellowbelly to spangled, silver and golden perch. Some areas require permits so check out the conditions of use before you go.
