Horizontalcollaborationwithinthesupplychainischaracterisedbyapoolingof resourcesbetweenmanufacturersratherthanmanufacturerscollaboratingwith logisticsserviceprovidersor4PLs(verticalcollaboration).Commonstrategies includeconsolidationofgoodsflows,sharingoftransportvehiclesandnetwork capacity,sharingwarehouses,consolidatingbuyingpowerandbackofficeprocesses suchasfinance,administration,customerservice,ITetc.Whilstnotadefining characteristic,horizontalcollaborationpartnershipscanfrequentlybethemost fruitfulwhenundertakenbysemiordirectcompetitors. WithtransportationcostsontherisethroughoutEuropeandincreasingpressureto reducespend,horizontalcollaborationprovidesauniquesolutiontoimproving supplychainefficiency,assetoptimisation,minimisingtheriskofemergingmarkets, andmaintainingmargin.Theinitiativeisbynomeansaquickfixitrequires diligence,patienceandinternalsupportatalllevels.However,horizontal collaborationinthesupplychainisswiftlyspreadingandcompanieswhoignoreit willfindthemselvesatahugecompetitivedisadvantagedowntheline.
