Michael Bullington Barnes AP Government 8 December 2011 Wilson Chapter 5 Guided Reading 1.

The government is designed to stay stable and consistent, not change with the publics whims. Also, it is very difficult to determine exactly what the people want. And, finally, the government pays more attention to the views of the knowledgeable elites than the more ignorant and apathetic masses. 2. Anyone will support something that will benefit them, especially if there are not strings attached to it. 3. Ignorance, unstable, and sensitivity. 4. Political Influence
Parents ideology Religious Tradition Social Status (economic factors affect political ideas) Gender (women=libe ral, Men= conservative) Schooling (college makes you more liberal) How one was raised. (raised in a free thinking family or a strict conservative family) Family history (if your family has been denied rights in the past, youre more likely to be liberal.

5. The majority of young people identify with their parents political views. This could be because parents teach kids nearly all of their opinions and raise them to think similarly to themselves; religion and economic factors would also play a major role in shaping the political views of the young people. 6. The radical children of radicals. He is pointing out that radical-radical generations are not a new thing.

7. Social status (wealthier people are more conservative; poorer are more liberal). Religious tradition (Protestants Christians are more conservative; Jews and Catholics are more liberal). 8. The Moral Majority is an older Christian political organization while the Christian Coalition was a major political force that gained prominence in the 1990s, helping many conservatives and religious figures become elected. 9. The difference between men and women politically. Men tend to identify more with conservatism while women tend to be more liberal

10. Liberal professors, greater access to information, concentration of liberal ideas, and the fact that people who attend college come from families that are most likely to be liberal. 11. 25% are college graduates, and 83% have a high school diploma. 12.
Social Class Poorer people tend to vote more liberally and wealthier people tend to vote more conservatively. However, political ideology is more about occupation than income; for example, plumbers and professors earn similar amounts but have very different opinions on certain matters. All in all, though, it is the non-economic issues (such as school prayers, abortion, and race relations) that most people use to define their ideology and that create less of a cleavage between the affluent and the poor. Traditionally, whites have been the most conservative race. There has, though, been an upturn in conservative blacks (just not among black leaders). Latinos seem to be more attracted to liberal parties but really there is not much literature or signs of true partisanship. Regional differences in political ideology are undeniable, and provable by the contrasting history of the north (liberal) and the south (conservative). However, the south shares economic ideas regarding social welfare and national policies as long as they werent connected to race or moral questions such as abortion.

13. Probably the amount of aid (in various forms) that has been given specifically to African Americans since the 1970s. With the government already helping or have helped Blacks, many will naturally be less inclined to wish for help or they will want to exert their independence without government intervention. 14.

15. The South has, on the whole, been more accommodating to business enterprise and less to organized labor than, for example, the Northeast; it have greater support to the third party candidacy of George Wallace in 1968, which was a protest against big government and the growth of national political power as well as against civil rights; and it was in the South that the greatest opposition arose to income redistribution plans such as the Family Assistance Plan of 1969. 16. Conservative meant wanting to resort back to absolute government control especially in economic affairs, in the 1700s. Now, though, it means wishing to rid the government of many of its powers and to have as little government regulation as possible. Concurrently, liberal meant wanting to become free of government interference in nearly all affairs where as now it means wanting government intervention in various issues.

17. Conservative. The questions should also include: The government should provide assistance to failing corporations. Corporations should be given the same constitutional rights as people. Undocumented aliens should not be forced to return to their origin. 18. A mix of conservative and libertarian. 19. Political elites are people who are involved somehow in politics and policy making. No because they are made up of people in all classes and are represented by different professions and ideologies. 20. The liberal middle class. It is made up of people who have a post-graduate education, live in big cities, are critical of business, have liberal social ideas and vote Democrat. 21. The more liberal (economically and socially) New Class differs in almost every way from the more conservative coalition (socially, not necessarily economically) while both groups make up the Democratic party. This creates a chasm in the partys political ideology.
