FOCUS : FUTURE TRANSPORTATION

THERE IS A REALIZATION THAT THERE IS AN INDIAN EMPHASIS ON FUEL ECONOMY RATHER THAN EMISSIONS REDUCTION. PR. PETER WHITE, IMECHE Professor White was in Pune, India during November 8th and 9th to Chair the conference, Innovations in Fuel Economy and Sustainable Road Transport. The conference delved in-depth on various technologies and products that would bring about fuel economy in the vehicles. Prof. White is of the opinion that the products for the Indian markets need to be fuel efficient but at the same time be competitively priced. More information on ITP FOCUS ON ELECTRIC CARS Global automobile industries have been taken in by electric cars which are now considered to be the future of the automotive sector. In the booming car market of India, electric cars are the latest additions and they are fast catching up. However, the market for electric vehicles in India, is still in a nascent stage with E-cars comprising only about 2-3 % of the passenger car sector and even in the next five years according to industry estimates, the electric car market is expected to have a market share of a mere 5%. More information on ITP THE REVA ELECTRIC VEHICLE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A LOCALLY BUILT LOW COST TOWN VEHICLE PR. PETER WHITE, IMECHE There is going to be an inevitable growth in 4 wheeled vehicles in India for private mobility. Currently India has 15 cars/1000 people compared to 37 in China, 525 in the UK, and 828 in the US. If this is acknowledged, and the new vehicles incorporate the latest technologies for minimising vehicle mass, and rolling resistance; optimising the power train; and minimising congestion the impact can be reduced. EDITORIAL
Fuel price : serious issue. The World Energy Council just reported that the demand for transport fuel is expected to grow strongly. It is said that countries like China and India will outpace the requirement of developed countries by 2025 with a demand that will triple or quadruple in the next 40 years. Regarding the demand in India, there is an essential element that needs to be tackled. According to Oil Secretary G C Chaturvedi, the weakening of the rupee against the US dollar has added a Rs 50,000 crore to the fuel subsidy. It means that Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan petroleum are losing on every liter of fuel, diesel, kerosene etc. sold. Furthermore, deregulation is not on the agenda. Regarding the car market, several auto companies estimate that 70% of buyers now want diesel models, and a Planning Commission working group is even studying a Rs 2 green surcharge on every liter of petrol. So it seems the future is bleak. Every stakeholder is thinking about how to reduce costs. Several have moved to Railways or are thinking of doing so, such as Dhara, Videocon Industries or Whirlpool. Definitely a unsustainable solution at the Indian scale.

DISCUSSING THE ACTION PLAN FOR ROAD SAFETY: Road safety in India has been a concern as the slow pace of infrastructure growth has been a hurdle amidst the rising count of vehicles on the roads. With a view to spread awareness and suggest the possible solutions, the India chapter of International Road Federation recently held its annual regional conference from 3th to 5th October 2011 in the Capital on the theme of Road Safety in India Action Plan. More information on ITP INDIA NEEDS A NEW MOTOR VEHICLE ACT! In a scenario where the country is trying to take control of the poor situation in the road safety in India, the motor vehicle act cannot be given a miss. In fact, it may be noted here that this act was formulated way back in year 1988 and even after 23 years, the rules remain almost the same. For instance, while the standard of living of an individual has improved by many folds but he is still accountable to pay only Rs. 100 as fine if the Traffic Police Officer catches him. A PROBLEM CALLED PARKING IN INDIA! The Indian automobile market has come a long way from the 1980s when the consumer had only a few options to choose from when it came to buying a new car. However, the fact is, buying a new car is no longer a status symbol (at least in the metropolitan cities) and is more of a necessity. But as there has been a wide gap in the growth of infrastructure and the growth of the Indian automobile industry, there is already a huge parking problem that the country faces today. For the less informed, India is currently the 11th largest passenger car market in the world and as per the estimates of J.D. Power and Associates, it will be the third largest market in the world by the end of 2020. More information on ITP

Currently, India is at the top when it comes to accidents and injuries caused by road accidents globally. In my view, there is a need to build capacity on all fronts in order to bring better measures for road safety in the country. For instance, there is a need to build capacity on the end of bureaucracy; there is a need to build capacity in bureaucrats to inform the politicians to take up the political will to bring a change in the scenario of road safety in India. Similarly, there is a need to build capacity in the field of traffic management, traffic enforcement, driver training, accident investigation, post accident management, public health and environment management. There are no solutions to the problems of this country if you dont have the backing of enough capacity on all these fronts. More information on ITP

SHOWCASING MODERN SOLUTIONS FOR PARKING AND ROAD SAFETY Parking of vehicles and effective management of traffic (especially in the metropolitan cities) is a hassle for almost everyone associated with it directly or indirectly in the country today. Even at the recently held InterTraffic 2011, almost all the technologies showcased focused on traffic safety, intelligent transport system, road infrastructure, safety and smart parking solutions. A month in the India Transport Sector TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

POOR FUNCTIONING OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS LEADING TO MORE CONGESTION Travelling on Indian roads is not an easy exercise and is sure to be accompanied with unprecedented congestion. High population density, along with an increasing number of vehicles, has added to the growing problem. A sound traffic signal system could be a plausible solution to everyday traffic woes however the poor functioning of these have only increased the problems in Indias cities. More information on ITP ELECTRONIC TOLL COLLECTION TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE TOLL COLLECTION FASTER ON INDIAN ROADS Automatic toll collection systems have helped ease traffic movement. The state-of-the-art technology with its advanced design helps the toll collection process significantly. India is realising the need of such fully automated toll collection machines which can be cost-effective and advantageous on Indian roads. With its cutting-edge technology, it assists in managing toll operations appropriately. Some of this toll collection equipment no longer requires manual operations. They are punctuated with semi-automatic lanes. It is even more efficient as both, the traffic details and the payment information are stored and collected by this system. Often, the equipment can capture video and/or image footage for violation enforcement purposes. More information on ITP INDIAN SUBWAYS HOW USEFUL ARE THEY DURING PEAK HOURS? In India over-crowded public transport and jam-packed roads are common. The high population country is heavily dependent on public transport so it is no wonder the existing means of transportations are overstretched. Facing traffic woes has become a part and parcel of commuters daily lives. The situation becomes worse especially during peak hours when traffic reaches its optimum level. It was therefore imperative to have a mass transit system in India that can carry more passengers and at the same time reduce the problem of congestion.
