The Future Professional Me: When I graduate from Arizona State University with
my bachelors degree in Health Sciences I would like to become a dentist. To think that

4 someday I would have the knowledge to help take care of patients and advise them on right choices, on their hygiene makes me want to pursue this career. Dentists are responsible for Diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and malformations of the teeth and mouth. Improving patients appearance by using a variety of cosmetic dental procedures. Also performing surgical procedures such as implants, tissue grafts and extractions. Performing different types of research directed to improving oral health and developing new treatment methods. Finally and most importantly educate patients on how to better care for their teeth and prevent oral disease, having good oral hygiene can prevent a lot of diseases that affect out society today. Those that would like to pursue this career would need a Bachelors Degree, which usually four years and dental school takes an additional three to four years depending on the program. The first job advertisement that I found was one that involved the United States Navy reserve. To practice the art of dentistry in the globally renowned network of Navy Health Care. The location of this is dependent on where you are needed the locations may include: anywhere from Naval Bases to National Naval Medical Centers, hospital ships to mobile clinics. The responsibilities of a navy dentist would include meeting the full spectrum of dental needs for military service members and their family. Incentives for applying would be the competitive pay and the following benefits: tax free allowances for housing and meals, low cost life insurance options, retirement benefits, low-cost travel opportunities and potential VA home loans. Other key opportunities would be the opportunity of being able to maintain an existing civilian career while enjoying the challenges and rewards of Navy Dentistry. Also this job would accommodate with the flexible scheduling serving as few as two days each month and two weeks each year. Other great benefit would be that the Navy would help with distinct professional advantages. For instance operating free of start-up costs, equipment expenses and insurance fees. Candidates must have U.S citizenship, Graduate of an eligible dental school accredited by the American Dental Association. As well as a license to practice in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Common -wealth of Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory. The candidate should also be 18 to 47years of age. I feel that one skill in this opportunity would include being able to part of a big community because being in the Navy you would a small piece of a huge community. Another would be efficient worker because since you are just going to be going twice a month in those two days the workload will be sure to be great. Also you will have to be dedicated to the patients you treat because it probably been a while that the service man or women hasnt gotten any dental services and you must pay attention to detail to ensure they are good until the next opportunity they get to come to get more work done because of their demanding life. The second advertisement that I found was for a company called Kool Smiles which is a growing dental practice with a mission of providing high quality dental care to underserved communities. With offices in multiple states across the country, we provide comprehensive general dentistry services to children and adults. They are currently hiring qualified, energetic General and Pediatric Dentists. Their location is in Arizona (statewide). Main requirement all candidates must gave degree in dentistry from an accredited dental program. In addition candidates must have an active license to practice dentistry in the state where providing patient care (License must be in good standing) or

5 be willing and able to obtain licensure. Some of the benefits to working here would be excellent training with paid time off, no management expensives, education and advancement opportunities. I feel that the skills that would be need for this job would be having the patience and desire to work with children on a daily basis. Also having the desire to be a part of a team. As well a hard working because there are more logistics when it comes to working with younger children. The last advertisement that I found was for a lead general dentist at company called Smiles this place is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Responsibilities for this job for this busy office are as follows: being able to provide care to the entire family, practicing highquality dentistry and directing the clinical staff. As well as: youll examine, diagnose, and provide treatment counseling to patients in a comprehensive manner. The office has a fantastic potential to do a substantial amount of production. Some of the benefits to working here is that the professional staff allows a doctor to focus solely on dentistry. This is a great opportunity youre someone whos just starting off in your dental career. I believe that this job would let one grow in leadership skills, being part of a community skill, communication skills with patients and staff, hard working, detail oriented. Mostly being able to able to work in a fast pace environment along with being a great with multiple tasks. The first profile I saw in Linked in was that of Ben Bershrschler DMD. He is a dentist that is currently working in Downtown Phoenix. His office is called Downtown Phoenix Dental. He offers 25 years of experience to his patients. His education includes: University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, University of Maryland College Park (Health Sciences). On his profile he has a total of 84 connections and 9 recommendations. He also advertises that his office is up to the date with the most modern technology that is available for dentists. The next profile that I saw was that of Gustavo Perdomo D.M.D. he practices in the state of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He specializes in prothodontist with significant clinical experience in fixed, removable, complete, implant fixed and removable supported restorations, cosmetic & Restorative dentistry. His offices is exceeding well at teaching, clinical activities, patient management and laboratory procedures. On his profile he shares that he 137 connections. He has worked internationally DMD/Prosthodontist at Chicago Center for Advanced Dentistry, Moscow, Russia. He received his education from Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University East Orange Veterans Hospital, Temple University - Kornberg School of Dentistry. His profile has a total of 227

6 connections. Having the advantage of have worked internationally gives him the opportunity to interact with a diverse population. Looking at these three very diverse profiles gives me an idea of what is required to get a job in dental field. It mainly emphasized the importance of education and that specializing always gives you a leg up on your competition. Secondly you need to have good network skills to have ability to reference your work or get help with your fellow collogues. The soft skills that are valued in this position are related to the criteria I would use to evaluate people within this particular position. These skills and criteria would be having a strong educational background, communication with diverse population of patients. The ability to work in a team is very important, because as a dentist you will always have people that are assisting you either as a whole staff or just one person. Never the less you have to be able to be a strong leader in your position to effectively carry out the task at hand. The last skill that is essential to have is the ability to multi-task, because as a dentist, playing many roles in your practice or work environment will challenge you.

The Current Me:

While I searched on Goggle on Internet explorer for myself the first website that came up was associated with the job that I currently hold in the University. (Public). The second website that I found was the one that links me to the Diigo group that we have created for this class TWC3 301 (public). While browsing Mozilla Fire Fox Internet browser the same information came up as in Internet Explorer. Strong Education Background: In order to be a dentist it is a given that you must have a stronger education background because it a profession that you will never stop learning. There will new techniques to learn in order to make your office more proficient and well know for being up to date on dental techniques and technology. Not to mention specializing is important to give you a leg up on your competition. This is a very crucial element in wanting to be a dentist. I feel like I am suitable for this because I am always trying to update everyone when it comes to technology I like to have what the best out there. Also I love to learn since I was a child I was excited to go to school to learn something new. I was always intrigued by our ability as humans to learn the process of how it is fascinating to me. Communication: This is a skill that is super important in this field. You will be surrounded with people to communicate with on a daily basis and it will be in different setting. For instance you will meet with other collogues or will advise patients or communicate with your staff. I feel that I can do that because of some of the experienced that I have had the opportunity to have in my previous jobs. Most of them have been interacting with all types of diverse populations in different setting. Ability to work in a team: As the dentist you will always have a team that works with you and you are in charge of being able to be a peace maker and be the glue that keeps your team working effectively to get work done because at the end of the day the work you provide represents you. I feel like I would be good at this because I have always had siblings and my parents have instilled in that its easier to get stuff done in team for it to get done faster. Strong Leader: Being a doctor is a strong title and people look up to you for your leadership skills and advise because you have the adequate training. You have to be able to find a task for a group of people to work effectively and happily so they will do the job correctly. You have to be able to listen to the people that are working for you and provide what they need to flourish and be at their best as your worker. I believe I would be able to do this because I have participated in many organizations where I have had to step up and be the leader for these. Because I like things done fast and right and most importantly correctly.

Being able to Multi task: You will be bombarded with a lot of distractions if you are a leader as soon as you sit down and start working with patients there a million things that could go wrong and for this you have to be able to do many things at the same time. I am confident that I will be able to handle this because now I do this when I am living my daily life especially when it comes to maintaining my studies or cleaning.

Conclusion: Bridging the Gap: One of the strengths that I have on my online identities is that the first link that comes up when my name is searched is something that is related to school. Never the less its a job that is associated with me. I believe that shows that I am a hard working student because I maintain a job on campus as well as being a student. Another strength is that in no links that come up with my name are found to be negative or have any negative associations with them. A weakness of this would be that all the links that come up don't have anything to do with what I want to be as a future professional. Looking at my identity you would think that I am not doing anything to help me get where I want to be in my professional life. The pages that come up when my names is searched could look and sound more professional to later enhance my over all professional look .
