Whats the biggest difference in
dealing with the state board of ed-
ucations business and a local
board of educations?
Having more time to focus on
education and curriculum in-
stead of the finances, according
to the newest state board of edu-
cation member, Joe Fisicaro.
Fisicaro returned to Marlton
this past week to lead students in
writing letters to soldiers over-
seas for the holidays, and took
some time to talk about his expe-
riences so far on the state BOE.
Fisicaro spent about an hour at
Jaggard Elementary School
Thursday, Dec. 15, helping the
fourth-grade students of Paula
Harrisons class to write the holi-
day greetings.
It was one of the latest initia-
tives from the governors office,
Fisicaro said, and he was more
than happy to visit his neighbor-
hood school to help the children.
This is just a great program.
Jaggard Elementary was the first
school to invite me to see this,
Fisicaro said as he watched chil-
dren design their cards.
The Evesham Township School
District will send out about 1,251
cards at the end of the holiday
season.
This is his new life as a state
board of education member.
When not in BOE meetings or
working with his various com-
mittees, Fisicaro travels to differ-
ent school districts throughout
New Jersey to visit with students
and faculty, to experience new
and exciting programs.
Fisicaro was sworn into his
seat on Oct. 5, and has since taken

Things are a little clearer now
on the future of the Evesham
Township Council.
A replacement for outgoing
Councilman Joe Howarth will
likely be named by early Febru-
ary, according to Mayor Randy
Brown.
This is the first time the town-
ship has had to replace a council
member who left office before his
term expired since the township
went to a partisan-election
process, Brown said.
It was such a new process that
nobody was quite certain how to
move forward when Howarth
won a seat on the Burlington
County Freeholder Board and an-
nounced he would have to resign
from the council.
Brown said Township Solicitor
John Gillespie has been invalu-
able throughout the process and
has briefed the members of the
council on the process.
The Evesham Republican Mu-
nicipal Committee will have 15
days after Howarth officially sub-
mits his resignation to the coun-
cil to submit a list of three candi-
dates of which the council mem-
bers will choose to take
Howarths empty seat, Brown
said.
Howarth must officially sub-
mit his resignation prior to Mon-
day, Jan. 2, when he will be sworn
into his seat on the freeholder
board.
After the township council re-
ceives the list of potential re-
placements, Brown said they
have 15 days to accept a replace-
ment.
Basically, we as the township

a role on the state BOEs science,
math and technology committee
as he becomes accustomed to his
new settings. Making the leap
from the Lenape Regional High
School BOE to the state BOE has
been a smooth one, he said, and
one that has an added upside.
We dont have to focus so
much on finances. Its all about
the curriculum and education,
Fisicaro said. The governors of-
fice has to worry about the finan-
cial aspect. The BOE is about the
education.
Its a different scenario than
when he started at the Evesham
BOE in 1988, he said, because
most of his job was about balanc-
ing the budget and making sure
the district had a firm financial
ground to stand on.
Currently, the state is looking
to revise its annual report cards,
Fisicaro said, to compare unique
schools to each other instead of
the past practices of comparing
school districts.
Also, the report cards will like-
ly place less of an emphasis on
the financial standings of a dis-
trict as well, he said.
The BOE also signed a waiver
for relief from the No Child Left
Behind act, and its 2014 deadline
for bringing all students to profi-
ciency in math and reading.
Its unfair to schools that have
one child perform poorly on a test
and subsequently fail the entire
school, Fisicaro said.
Despite his good work at the
state level, Evesham School Dis-
trict BOE President Sandy Stu-
dent said losing a friend in Fisi-
caro to the state was tough to han-
dle for the kindergarten through
eighth-grade district.
Whenever we had something
that we needed, or wanted to
change something, we always had
Joe to turn to at the Lenape dis-
trict. He was an ally, Student
said. He could still walk into any
school or Cherokee High School
today and know most of the stu-
dents.

And how did they manage it in
the middle of dismal economic
conditions, and a traffic-snarling
road-construction project that
has resided at its doorstep for
more than two years?
It may sound a bit simplistic,
but our success is anchored by
three basic practices, said co-
owner Peter Fletcher. Aggressive
pricing, outstanding selection
and superior customer service.
Peter Fletcher and Tom Doyle
have taken on tough new competi-
tion to make Canals BottleStop
one of New Jerseys top destina-
tion stores, said Marvin R.
Shanken, editor and publisher of
Market Watch.
In a business where 60 percent
of sales derive from wine, Bot-
tleStop offers a wide selection of
more than 4,500 wines ranging
in price from $4.99 to $749.95
that come from the most popular
and well-respected vineyards in
America and from around the
world.
We have dedicated customers
who keep coming back to our
store because of the trust we have
developed with them through our
deep knowledge of the wines we
select for them, Fletcher said.
Wines simply dont sell them-
selves. Our customers trust us
from previous recommendations,
and that is why they keep return-

council, have 30 days after Joes
resignation to accept a replace-
ment, Brown said. John Gille-
spie has done a great job for us
with this. He has given us the
exact formula legally that we
have to use.
Because Howarth is a Republi-
can, Brown said he legally has to
be replaced with another Republi-
can. If he had been a Democrat,
he would have been replaced with
a democrat, he said.
The Evesham Republic Munic-
ipal Committee cannot submit a
list of replacement for Howarth
until he officially resigns. Whoev-
er is chosen as his replacement
will see their seat expire next
year.
In addition to being a member
of the council, Howarth is also
the deputy mayor. He won a seat
on the board of chosen freehold-
ers in November.
He and his fellow Republican
candidate, Leah Arter, defeated
Democratic candidates Mary
Anne Reinhart and Machell Still-
Pettis, to capture two open seats.
Arter led all candidates with
38,355 votes, with Howarth close
behind with 38,216. Reinhart gar-
nered 34,506 votes and Still-Pettis
received 32,579.
The GOP now has all seats on
the freeholder board.

Thank you for participating in
our cookie drive
On behalf of the Yellow Ribbon Club, we
would like to extend our deepest thanks for
your participation in our cookie campaign
for the troops, which was held on Dec. 3 in
Marlton.
This cookie drive was the best one yet.
Last year, we did a cookie drive in De-
cember, and we collected and shipped a lit-
tle more than a half of a ton of cookies to
the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We were hoping to at least collect the same
this year, but we are happy to report that
we nearly tripled last years count.
We shipped almost one and a half tons of
cookies to the troops in Afghanistan on
Monday, Dec. 5. There were a total of 221
large boxes filled with all kinds of cookies
that were sent to the troops.
We very much appreciate all of the work
that you did to bake or buy cookies and
then you took time out of your busy day to
deliver them to us at the Marlton United
Methodist Church on Dec. 3.
We are so proud that we live in an area of
the country where people are patriotic and
care about our troops.
There are a lot of military men and
women who will be away from their fami-
lies during the holiday season, and they re-
ally appreciate it when a taste of home
comes to them. Please keep an eye on our
website for replies from the troops, as we
will post them as they come in.
Again, thank you so much for helping us
with the best cookie drive yet. Lots of sol-
diers, marines and airmen will soon be en-
joying the yummy treats.
The Yellow Ribbon Club
I
n a couple of weeks, The Sun will
feature a look ahead at the big is-
sues in your community in 2012.
As part of the reporting process, our
writers will be interviewing local
elected officials and administrators.
Well ask them about their views on
the coming year. What issues from
2011 will linger into 2012? Are there
new initiatives or challenges ahead?
What are their plans, as the communi-
ties enter a new year?
Now, were asking you, our readers,
to share your thoughts on what the big
issues of 2012 will be.
Do you have questions youd like us
to ask your local mayor or school su-
perintendent? Do you wonder about
something that has been going on for a
long time in your town, but never
seems to get resolved? Are there mat-
ters that, for whatever reason, never
seem to attract enough attention ei-
ther from those of us in the media or
from those who are in a position to
make needed changes?
Let us know. And then well make
sure to put your questions to those
who have the power to make a differ-
ence.
Just send us an email with your
thoughts and questions.
The new year is viewed by many as
a blank slate. Its a time to start again,
to tackle challenges that have not been
addressed, or to look to new opportu-
nities that have not been explored.
We want our preview stories to
bring the issues that are important to
you into the spotlight. We want to get
decision-makers on record regarding
their plans to bring issues to a close or
to take advantage of situations that
will be available in 2012.
Dont delay. Send your questions
today, and well get busy tracking
down the answers.
Any questions for leaders?
Whats on your mind as 2012 nears? New issues? Unresolved matters?
2012 almost here
Do you have any questions for deci-
sion-makers as the new year
approaches? Let us know, and then
well ask those in charge for their
answers.

New Jersey feels earthquake
that didnt happen
Did you feel that?
Dozens of New Jersey residents report-
ed feeling an earthquake recently.
But the U.S. Geological Survey said their
equipment didnt register a thing, accord-
ing to the Star-Ledger. So what the heck
was it?
Geophysicist John Bellini, at the U.S. Ge-
ological Surveys Colorado office, said it
might have been thunder (which the Na-
tional Weather Service said was unlikely)
or a sonic boom.
Fighter jets from nearby military bases
might have done it, but the military in its
usual military way is neither confirming
nor denying anything.

Falling asleep in court doesnt

Falling asleep in court was not enough
to toss out a Bridgeton mans conviction
for shoplifting even though his head no-
ticeably hit the counsel table while poten-
tial jurors were watching.
An appellate court panel affirmed the
2009 verdict and sentencing of Hirial
Washington, according to the Gloucester
County Prosecutors Office rejecting the
defendants argument that the trial judge
should have inquired about his fitness for
trial after he arrived late and passed out
during jury selection.
The judge inquired plenty, the panel de-

The Southern N.J. Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently honored three individuals as
Distinguished Citizens of the Year from Camden County. Pictured from the left are state Sen. Donald
Norcross, Camden County Distinguished Awards Reception co-chair and past award recipient; Dr. Joseph
Conway, co-founder of Camdens Promise Charter School, Camden Academy Charter High School and
Camdens Pride Elementary School; and Jim Kehoe, business manager, Local 322, Plumbers and
Pipefitters. Not pictured are Dan McDonough Jr., chief executive officer of Elauwit Media; and Henry
Ludwigsen, managing partner, Bowman & Co., LLP, vice president of finance of the Southern New Jersey
Council, Boy Scouts of America and Camden County Distinguished Awards Reception co-chair.
The Burlington County Office
of Consumer Affairs is looking
for past customers of Weddings
Unlimited and Renaissance Pho-
tography who paid for, but did not
receive, their photographs.
Jack Holton, who operated pho-
tography businesses in Medford,
Cinnaminson and Palmyra at
various times, under the names
Weddings Unlimited or Re-
naissance Photography, in now
serving a three-year prison sen-
tence for having defrauded cus-
tomers.
The Burlington County Office
of Consumer Affairs brought
more than 80 complaints against
Holton and his photography busi-
nesses to the Burlington County
Prosecutors Office in 2009. Some
of the complaints alleged non-de-
livery of products, such as photo-
graphs and albums; some were
for non-performance of contract-
ed services such as weddings, and
one was for poor quality of work.
Most of the complaints were
between September 2002 and May
2009.
The thefts range in amounts
from $800 to $6,600, and the vic-
tims came from several counties
across New Jersey and Pennsyl-
vania.
This case is a perfect example
of how our office of consumer af-
fairs helps Burlington County
residents seek justice if they un-
fortunately fall victim to a scam
or fraudulent company, said
Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien. The con-
sumer-affairs staff will investi-
gate any complaint a resident
brings against a company or indi-
vidual with whom a contract has
been made.
Holton has surrendered dozens
of CDs full of photos from the
events. These CDs are now being
stored at the office of consumer
affairs.
Many of them are not labeled
or marked in any way, so its
difficult to locate proper cus-
tomers.
Anyone who had entered into
a photography agreement with
Holton and who never received
photographs, should contact the
office of consumer affairs at (609)
265-5054.

Approximately 100 people
joined military and elected gov-
ernment officials at Beverly Na-
tional Cemetery to place 332
wreaths on gravesites in a desig-
nated section of the historic
cemetery as part of Wreaths
Across America recently.
The brief ceremony began at
noon, simultaneous with cere-
monies at 650 sites around the
world, with a moment of silence.
Then, seven wreaths were
placed to remember those who
served in each branch of service
and Prisoners Of War/Missing In
Action.
More than 100,000 wreaths
were placed at Arlington National
Cemetery, the site of the first
Wreaths Across America ceremo-
ny 19 years ago.
The Burlington County Free-
holders supported the effort at
Beverly for the sixth consecutive
year, and Freeholder Joseph B.
Donnelly thanked all those who
served and who are serving in
our Armed Forces, and the mem-
bers of the public who attended.
Vietnam Veteran Curt Ander-
son played Amazing Grace on
the bagpipes and U.S. Army (ret.)
bugler Dick Pinter played Taps
to conclude the ceremony.
All in attendance were then in-
vited to place three wreaths on
the graves of Medal of Honor re-
cipients buried at Beverly.
Following that, 329 wreaths
were placed in Section S of the
cemetery.
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean E. Stanfield has announced
the results of a three-day child-
support raid executed recently, a
sweep that resulted in the arrest
of 37 individuals who owed
$507,139 in court-ordered child
support.
This was a cooperative effort
involving law enforcement
agencies both within and outside
the county, Stanfield said. En-
forcing child-support orders
sends a clear message that the
needs of our children must be
met.
This is a critical issue which,
in the grand scheme of things, af-
fects all taxpayers. When child
support goes unpaid, the cost of
care often falls on state and coun-
ty social services and other agen-
cies.
The raid was executed by
the sheriff s department
between Dec. 6 and 8, and in-
volved the assistance of police
departments in Burlington City,
Pemberton Township, Riverside,
Willingboro, Hamilton Township
and East Greenwich, as well as
Burlington County Central Com-
munications.
The arrests involved individu-
als from 17 municipalities.
Five of those arrested were on
outstanding warrants unrelated
to child support.

The Marlton Sun
The holidays are quickly ap-
proaching, and for many people,
that means a busy season of shop-
ping, gathering with family and
eating.
For many, this does not leave
much time to worry about diet
and exercise, but that doesnt
mean that people cant stay
healthy and fit, experts say.
There are many quick and easy
steps people can take to stay in
shape and eat healthy during the
holiday season.
It is important for people to
maximize the efficiency of what
they do, Kevin Hamm, fitness di-
rector at Medford Fitness, said.
Interval training is the most ef-
fective way to go for people that
dont have injuries. Twenty- to 30-
minute, high-intensity intervals
are good for people to do. Com-
bine weights and cardio exercis-
es, no rest in between the exercis-
es, keep moving. It gives you a
whole body workout. You do it in
short bursts, get it all done and no
parts of the body miss out.
Efficient workouts are the
way to go, but you want to be
working on these all year, Jim
Bompensa, owner of Body
Physics Fitness in Haddonfield,
said. Cardio and strength exer-
cises at the same time saves a lot
of time. You can work out 30 min-
utes a day and work the full body.
You set up circuits and move from
one exercise to the next.
Outside of normal daily exer-
cises, there are things people can
do while out during the holiday
season.
Any extra movement you can
add to your day is good, Bompen-
sa said. The more moving a per-
son is doing, the better. If youre
at the mall, parking far away and
walking is a good way to burn
calories.
Setting goals for the year to
help deal with the busy, holiday
season as far as fitness and eat-
ing go is also an effective way to
deal with the season.
Its good to have goals for the
year, Hamm said. You have to
write them down and commit to
them. You have to be concrete and
have a specific goal in mind.
Ninety-five percent of peoples
New Years resolutions are to lose
weight. By June, 92 percent forget
about that goal. You have to be
specific and stick with it.
Your routine should encom-
pass the whole year, Bompensa
said. That way, if you eat a little
more at the end of the year, you
wont be worried so much about
it. You can enjoy it. Stay fit
throughout the year so you wont
be so crazy about it at the begin-
ning of the next year.
Being conscientious of what
and how you are eating during
the holiday season will also help
with keeping the pounds off.
Before going to a party, eat
something healthy and drink a lot
of water, Hamm said. That will
give you a feeling of fullness.
Also, while you are running
around, make sure you eat. Some
people during the holidays are
running around all day, and by
the end of the day, they are
famished and then overeat.
Watch the portions. Dont
overindulge in cookies, cake or
other treats.
Eat foods that are high in pro-
tein, Bompensa said. Food that
is high in protein tends to have
less calories and is filling. Try to
stay away from foods with a lot of
sauces or sweets. Try to stick
with foods like meats and vegeta-
bles. Be moderate with sauces
and sweets.

Ward off those unwanted holiday pounds
Residents living in and around
the Marlton community can be
screened to reduce their risk of
having a stroke or bone fracture.
VFW Post No. 6295 will host Life
Line Screening on Jan. 27.
The site is located at 94 10th St.
in Marlton.
Four key points every person
needs to know:
Stroke is the third-leading
cause of death and a leading
cause of permanent disability.
80 percent of stroke victims
had no apparent warning signs
prior to their stroke.
Preventive-ultrasound screen-
ings can help you avoid a stroke.
Screenings are fast, noninva-
sive, painless, affordable and con-
venient.
Screenings identify potential
cardiovascular conditions such
as blocked arteries and irregular
heart rhythm, abdominal
aortic aneurysms, and hardening
of the arteries in the legs, which
is a strong predictor of heart dis-
ease.
A bone density screening to as-
sess osteoporosis risk is also of-
fered and is appropriate for both
men and women.
Packages start at $149. All five
screenings take 60 to 90 minutes
to complete.
For more information regard-
ing the screenings or to schedule
an appointment, call (877) 237-
1287 or visit www.lifelinescreen
ing.com. Pre-registration is re-
quired.
