Edwin Grimsley, M.D., Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine and Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program of Mercer University School of Medicine at the Medical Center of Central Georgia invites you to the Waddell Barnes, M.D. Annual Day of Medicine to be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 7:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The program will be held in Joseph W. Eversole Auditorium at the Medical Center.

The lineup of expert speakers will Include: Ajay Srivastava, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine Division of Nephrology. Dr. Srivastava will present a talk on Resistant Hypertension. He will discuss the new AHA guidelines for treating resistant hypertension. Ritu Kumar, M.D., Assistant Professor 5 of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease will discuss Community Acquired MRSA. She will describe the risk factors for developing CA-MRSA and evaluate the most appropriate options for treatment; Steven Carpenter, M.D., Chair, Department of Medicine, Professor of Medicine, Mercer University School of Medicine (Savannah Campus). Dr. Carpenter will give us an update on gastrointestinal disease and many factors that affect treatment, and Edward Ryzdak, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Mercer University School of Medicine (Savannah Campus). Dr. Ryzdak will discuss Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and specifically how to recognize the symptoms, define the treatment methods and the prevention of NAFLD.

Call for Abstracts History of Medicine fans and scholars. Each year the Medical Education - Surgery Department of the Medical Center of Central Georgia, and the Department of Surgery, Mercer University School of Medicine hosts a wonderful half-day of presentations on a wide range of topics on the rich history of medicine. Participants from the middle Georgia medical community and anyone with an interest in medical history are welcome to participate. Presentations should be 15 - 20 minutes in length accompanied with a standard PowerPoint slideshow. A brief description of the topic, the information to be presented, the name of the presenter, and contact information should be sent to Martin Dalton, M.D., Medical Education - Surgery, Medical Center of Central Georgia by fax or email (Dalton.Martin@mccg.org, or in care of Liz Jennings, Jennings.Elizabeth@mccg.org). A Message from Marcia Hutchinson, M.D.: It is with much grief and sadness that I share with our academic community the tragic death of Dr. Empress Hughes, a first year pediatric resident here at MCCG and MUSM. She died in an automobile accident on her way to work the morning of December 12, 2011. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn her passing.
