Circumcision and Covenant

Circumcision is a COVENANTAL term, and understanding it helps one understand Gods covenant with his people. Physical circumcision was required to be a part of Gods covenant people. Circumcision was required to be a part of Israel and the Sinai covenant.

Leviticus 12:3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

The stranger that desired to be a part of Israel had to be circumcised.

Exodus 12:48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

Those who violated this command were CUT OFF from the covenant nation.

Genesis 17:14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. Physical circumcision was a type of spiritual circumcision, the circumcision of the heart.

Deuteronomy 10:16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked. Jeremiah 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

Rebellion is a sign of an uncircumcised heart. Disobedience to the Old Covenant law made ones circumcision un-circumcision.

Romans 2:25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Remember UNCIRCUMCISION caused one to be CUT OFF from the COVENANT NATION. Ezekiel 14:7-8 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

Also those who refused to listen to the PROPHET like unto MOSES would be CUT OFF.

Deuteronomy 18:18-19 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. Acts 3:23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Some of the branches of the olive tree of Israel were broken off:

Romans 11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

The circumcision of the heart is NOW necessary to be in covenant with God, and be a part of Gods COVENANT people. Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

This circumcision is in CHRIST. Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Those of the physical circumcision who accepted Christ were circumcised without hands, and those who rejected Christ were CUT OFF, and they were no longer a part of Gods covenant people.
