Dr Suresh Chari is a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic and President of the Hindu Temple in Rochester. He is a regular speaker at interfaith meetings in the community representing the Hindu perspective on issues.

Introduction to Hinduism __________________________________________

Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma is an ancient religion with origins in India. For a long time the Western world was not exposed to the religion as the overwhelming majority of its adherents live in India. However, Hinduism has a lot to offer to people of other faiths. Also, with the emergence of India as an economic power, spread of Yoga and meditation into American popular culture, and increasing number of immigrants from India, there has been growing interest in Hinduism. This introductory class will give an overview of the faith and will focus on questions on history and origins of Hinduism, what defines a Hindu, Hindu sacred texts, Hindu beliefs and practices, and Hindu views on God and paths to realizing God or self-realization. The class will also briefly discuss influence of Hinduism on popular American culture and some of the misconceptions regarding Hindu beliefs and practices. NEW We'll Always have Paris __________________________________________

Paris has inspired not only lovers but poets, painters, and composers. During his 1778 visit, Mozart created his grandest symphony for the largest orchestra he ever knew (Symphony No. 31: Paris). In 1927, visitor George Gershwin captured the sounds and spirit of Roaring Twenties Paris with his An American in Paris. The following year longtime Paris resident Virgil Thomson, nostalgic for his Midwestern home, created his Symphony on a Hymn tune. And Gioacchino Rossini composed his final opera, and greatest overture, for the Paris Opera (William Tell) before retiring to live the rest of his life outside, you guessed it, Paris! Lucy's Cradle, the Birth of Wonder __________________________________________

What combination of environmental variation and stability is required for life to begin and to become intelligent? This large screen planetarium program produced at the Houston Museum of Natural History chronicles biologic and geologic developments along the East African Rift Valley and then follows the spread of humans around the globe. From the obelisks of Axum to mountaintop observatories, humans have searched for a relationship with the heavens. Modern astronomers are continuing a magnificent journey of human vision that began over 3 million years ago when a young female hominid peered over the grassland of East Africa and saw the distant horizon beyond her fingertips. Tehching Hsieh's art is his life. He meticulously documents self-imposed one-year performances that constrain his life. He confined himself to a cell exploring isolation. He punched a time clock every hour, on the hour, twenty-four hours a day for studying time. He examined relationships tied to another artist with an 8-foot rope. Billy and Tehching traded insights and work when they met as visiting artists for England's Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Instructor: Billy X. High Tea Anyone? _____________________________________________

More and more we hear about the importance of drinking tea. Many people have experienced High Tea. However, High Tea is a misnomer. It comes from eating at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. The English Ceremony of Afternoon Tea dates back to the 1840's as a way to ward off inevitable hunger before dinner. It is less a working class meal and more an EVENT. Today it has become an elegant affair served in many restaurants and hotels across the world. It is not an exercise program, a martial art, or a religion, but rather a form of moving meditation with benefits for body, mind, and spirit. It is easily learned, requires very little practice space, no special clothing, and can be done by anyone regardless of age or physical condition. While benefits received vary with the individual, many people report improved balance and flexibility; improvement in chronic problems such as blood pressure, arthritis, and fibromyalgia; and reduced stress and an over-all sense of wellbeing and joy in life. Give yourself the gift of inner peace. Come learn the art of staying calm and centered no matter what stressful or chaotic situation is going on around you. This series is an introduction, yet an in-depth exploration of Hatha Yoga as practiced in the Himalayan Tradition style of yoga. The aim of this style is awareness of being in the present moment and cultivating mental flexibility. The emphasis is not on learning complicated postures (asanas)-but on experiencing simple postures done mindfully with breath and relaxation--training one's self to move from a place of centered stillness within. The eminent English conductor Paul McCreesh returns to the SPCO with music by two of his country's most seminal composers. The program opens with Edward Elgar's "String Serenade," a work whose debt to Johannes Brahms is magnified by that composer's bucolic "Serenade No. 1." Also included is the enchanting "Nocturne for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra" by the greatest English composer of the twentieth century, Benjamin Britten, featuring the SPCO debut of English tenor Robert Murray. On the heels of the wildly successful Brief Encounter and Private Lives, the Guthrie presents Nol Coward's delightful comedy of manners for the first time. The eccentric Bliss familyJudith, a recently retired actress, David, a selfabsorbed novelist, and their two unconventional children - live in a world where reality slides easily into fiction. Upon entering this world, the weekend guests - a proper diplomat, a shy flapper, an athletic boxer, and a fashionable sophisticate - are thrown into melodramatic scenes wherein their hosts profess emotions and react to situations that do not really exist. The comedic chaos ends only when the tortured visitors tip-toe out the door. Cleverly constructed and slightly cynical, this entertaining romp will be directed by rising British director Christopher Luscombe. NEW "St. Paul's Gangster Musical" at the Great American History Theatre in St. Paul Thursday, May 3
Crime is running rampant in St. Paul! Our fair city is the crime capital of the U.S.A. where Public Enemies like Alvin "Creepy" Karpis and the Ma Barker Gang have free reign. A few shady deals form a truce of sorts: if the criminals keep a low profile, then the cops will turn a blind eye. But when J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI enter the picture, Karpis and the Barker Gang are put on the run. It's high stakes at the Hollyhocks with great songs by Drew Jansen, dance numbers featuring G-men and Tommy guns, and a dose of dark humor as we explore the crazy days of St. Paul's infamous past.
