Sustainable development
Air pollution, unpredictable weather and the increasing severity of natural disasters in recent years, have led to an increased awareness on the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development. The primary task of administrators and representatives of city government is to create beautiful and livable environments for residents. They need to create cities that are safe and comfortable to live and work in, while being responsible towards the planet, and answerable to future generations.
Innovation
Today, there are 1.3 billion people living in the cities of Asia. Every year there is 34% growth in total population and 85% urbanization growth. Very soon, Asia will reach 2 billion city inhabitants. This unprecedented pace of development and human population density necessitates that the development of cities in Asia do not fully trace the progression that developing cities in the West have taken. Instead, Asian cities need to leap-frog ahead, to seek development paths that are better suited to Asia, in order to establish fresh new cities that each have their own strong sense of individuality. In the transformation towards modernism, innovations and new ideas are essential catalysts.
As a global leader in the lighting industry, Philips strives to harness new technology and advanced methodology, to create solutions for illuminating the streets of developing cities in a sustainable manner. Our solutions can save up to 44% in terms of energy consumption, and reduce the carbon dioxide emissions while ensuring that roads are safe and comfortably illuminated. Philips is rmly focused on the future. By providing products that have an extended lifespan, we can help create greener living environments in the cities, further enhancing the quality of life while safeguarding our future through sustainable development.

Philips Lighting Solutions for Green Roads Working towards balanced development
Philips provides a complete package of energy efcient lighting solutions in all applications, and continues to create innovative technology and new applications.
Today, a quality urban street requires more than these basic safety norms, it demands the natural, bright, and comfortable street lighting to create an environment that is even more enchanting than it is in the daytime - a natural urban night scene mingled with city, people, light.
reduction of harmful emissions while simultaneously ensuring that the public can enjoy safe passage. Achieving this goal requires the use of different types of technology and innovations, making smart choices where energy efficient lamps, gears, fixtures and control systems are integrated into a design that optimises each component when deployed. Philips Lighting presents four solutions for the Green Road.
The EssentialLine luminaire has a sleek, contemporary design to suit any kind of modern city development project. It features multiple high-quality white color temperature choices.
Revolutionary, making green more effective EssentialLine: the professional LED road lighting
The EssentialLine road lighting system is the latest line of LED urban street luminaires which are designed to help urban planners make the switch to a more efficient road lighting system. Available in a variety of beam and wattage configurations, EssentialLine ensures a safe and comfortable visual experience in every kind of road application. The intelligent, robust and modular design ensures that future upgrades can be made easily, without having to replace the entire lighting system. Best of all, the systems long lifespan means that resources are also conserved in manufacturing, maintenance time and expenditure, which ultimately results in less waste and pollution, thereby reducing the overall burden on society.

Illumination level of the road is too low, affecting visibility. Unable to comply with required safety standards. Illumination is uneven on the road surface. Does not comply with required safety standards. Appropriate level of illumination that is even, with glare control. Completely complies with the required safety standards.
Energy Conservation
The need for more LEDs results in higher energy usage In order to achieve surface uniformity that meet safety standards, an increased number of poles are needed, resulting in higher energy consumption. Using the least number of LED luminaire and poles to achieve the most impact in reducing energy consumption.
EssentialLine embodies an intelligent, robust and modular design that ensures future upgrades can be made easily, without having to replace the entire lighting system.

During off-peak periods, the Step Dim System safely reduces the wattage oflamps to 150W, without any adverse effects on reliability or grid pollution. This translates to 40% savings annually, a huge achievement in terms of energy conservation and road safety. As a result, the Wuxi Municipal Government is procuring an additional 1,000 luminaires with step-dimmers for this project.
Switch off one light every two poles, or one side of street during off-peak hours
This inexible approach risks road safety by lowering illuminance levels during peak hours.
X Known as the zebra effect, this method causes dark and bright strips that distract drivers and increase fatigue, seriously affecting trafc safety.
X This approach also causes the zebra effect, but with the added inconvenience of requiring manual control.
X This method shortens lamp life and reduces total system reliability, while increasing maintenance costs and grid pollution through harmonic distortion.
Philips StepDim sys tem deliver s illumination that completely complies with international road safety standards in terms of luminance, uniformity, and glare control. Conserve energy without compromising on quality of life. Fuzzy logic circuits integrated into timer control enable gradual adjustments of the system in order to avoid the risks associated with sudden changes in road conditions due to abrupt lighting adjustments.
