CREATING YOUR BEAR

Carefully cut out the paper pattern and place all pieces in front of you. Look at the mohair and see which way the mohair lies. Have the mohair so when you stroke it like it is a cat or dog, downwards. This will show you the way the mohair lies. Now you can turn it over, you are ready to cut out. Using the arrows as guidance lay the pieces on the back of the mohair following the line of the mohair. Draw around the pattern pieces and cut out, taking care to cut ONLY the backing cotton and not the mohair. HEAD 1. With right sides together, pin then sew the HEAD sides together from A to B. 2. Sew the centre of the HEAD GUSSET C, the centre piece you have already sewn between the Nose.

Follow on from this, sewing one side of the HEAD GUSSET to the HEAD side. Repeat at other side. 3. Turn right side out. Carefully stuff the head solidly, starting at the nose, and stuff using small pieces at a time. Take your time and ensure the head is stuffed well and evenly. HEAD JOINT 1. Sew a gathering (running) stitch around the neckline with a length of extra strong thread. 2. Place one joint (as shown on pattern page) together. Place at the opening of the neck. 3. Pull the thread keeping the joint in place. Pull tightly and knot securely. Sew the remaining thread through the head and, pulling tautly, cut off remaining thread. EYES 1. Determine the eye position with a pair of glass headed pins 2. Using a Doll Needle and 15 of Extra Strong Thread, enter at the back neck edge and push the needle up through where you chose the eye area to be, leaving 6 of thread remaining at the neck edge. 3. Thread the eye on to the thread and squash the loop flat together so it will go back in through the eye hole with the minimum of effort, and exit back out at the neck edge very near the 6 of thread. 4. Pull and knot tightly three times. Sew the remaining thread up through the head and pulling tautly, cut off remaining thread. 5. Repeat for other eye. EARS 1. With right sides together, pin and sew the two ear pieces together, ensuring the flat edge is left open for turning. 2. Turn right side out and fold the raw edges of the flat edge under, and sew together using a ladder stitch. Pull tightly, and double stitch a couple of times to secure your sewing. 3. Sew in through the ear and, pulling tautly, cut off. 4. Repeat with other ear. ATTACHING THE EARS 1. Pin the ears in the desired position, then, using ladder stitch and extra strong thread, attach the ears to the head. 2. Double back on your stitches to ensure they are secure, sew in to the head and cut off excess thread. NOSE

1. Trim mohair around muzzle area and pluck hairs where you are going to sew the nose. 2. Sew nose and mouth onto your bear using your chosen colour of extra strong thread or very fin Perle cotton. I personally think noses look best when they are sewn from North to South. BODY 1. Pin and sew top body sides together, inside out, leaving open the gap A to B. Sew from B around to A. There is a small gap you must leave at the top of the body as shown. This is where you will push the cotter pin through to attach the head joint to the body. 2. Turn the right way round. 3. Make small holes, using a fine knitting needle, where shown. These holes are where you will attach the legs and arms to the body. ARMS 1. Pin then sew right sides together. Carefully turn right side out. Create small holes as before for attaching the arm to the body. LEGS 1. Pin and sew right sides together, from A to B, and C to D. Repeat for other leg. 2. Pin the foot pad into place, matching up the centre of the foot pad with the centre of the front toe of the leg and hand sew into place. 3. Turn right side out and make a small hole where marked for the joints. FOR THE LEG AND ARM JOINTS, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ONLY ONE HOLE IN EACH ARM AND THEY ARE AT OPPOSITE SIDES, SO THEY WILL BE THE CORRECT WAY ROUND WHEN YOU ATTACH TO THE BODY. JOINTING Head 1. The Head is already attached to the cotter pin, so you simply push the cotter pin (with the head attached) through the space you have already made in the body. 2. Now place a hardboard disc, then the washer (if provided) on to the cotter pin INSIDE THE BODY and twist to tighten using the long nosed pliers as shown on pattern sheet. Legs / Arms 1. Place the metal washer (if provided), then the hardboard disc onto the cotter pin and push the cotter pin joint through the hole you have already made. 2. Now stuff solidly, ensuring the cotter pin is still in place. 3. Push the cotter pin (with the leg / arm attached) through the space you have already made in the body.

4. Now place a hardboard disc, then the washer (if provided) on to the cotter pin INSIDE THE BODY and twist to tighten using the long nosed pliers as shown on pattern sheet. 5. Repeat with remaining joints. STUFFING 1. Filling your bears tummy is the remaining decision on how your bear will look and feel. Stuffing solidly will make an upright modern bear, whilst stuffing less solidly will give a saggy old style bear. Using steel shot or glass or plastic pellets will add weight to your bear. Again, this is a personal choice. 2. Stuff the top of the bear first, quite solidly with poly fibre. 3. The lower part of the body can then be filled with just poly fibre, or a mix of poly fibre and pellets or steel shot, depending on the feel and weight you wish for your bear. 4. Stuff with more poly fibre near the opening to reduce the chance of losing shot or pellets, if used. ASSEMBLY 1. Fold in all the excess flaps on the openings and ladder stitch all openings together. Back stitch a few times to make sure they are secure. Sew into the body and cut off excess thread. TIDYING/FINISHING 1. Using a comb or teasel brush loosen off all hairs caught in the seams. 2. Now look at your new bear. Is it male or female? Does he/she want to hat? An outfit? A pretty ribbon? Maybe some repairs and patches to make them look old? It is all up to you!

Well done, you now have a wonderful new bear for your collection. Be proud!
