The Tata group has been able to sustain itself in the post liberalization era by basing its business

dealing on the five core values: integrity, understanding, excellence, unity and responsibility. Group has been following a top down appro ach in practice and refinement of CSR activities. At Tata s it all starts from the promoter company. Tata Sons, the major holding company in all the Tata group co mpanies is run by trusts. These a public trusts. Thus showing that the Tata s self lessness. These trusts engage in a number of social activities. The trusts are: Ratan Tata Trust -Worked for women from lower income groups -Contribution to homeless, hospitals, outpatient dispensaries, village schools, blind schools The Lady Tata Memorial Trust (1932) -Huge contributions for research work on Leukemia -Helped women for higher education JRD Tata Trust (1944) -Advancement for learning & relief of human suffering Jamshethji Tata Trust (1974) -To assist innovative projects -Rehabilitation of the blind, helping aged The Homi Bhabha fellowship Council(1966) -Scholarships for promotion of excellence in any field of endeavor The board of Tata Sons consists of 9 directors. These are called the 9 wise man. They are selected from the employees of the Tata Group, who have worked with an d contributed to the growth of the group. The board follows the policy of provid ing strategic vision and mentor manager ship. The senior mangers are assigned a number of employees (potential future leaders) of the company. The mentor s have t he responsibility of inculcating the values and practices of the group in the em ployees. These include the core values and CSR. Employees The group has a belief that it s the employees who make Tata group what it is toda y. They are the ones who have given their blood and sweat towards the company an d it s the company s responsibility to look after their betterment and their family s as well. The group strives to create a sense of loyalty and belonging among its employees. The group has always encouraged apprenticeship. It is the first compa ny in world to introduce an 8 hrs work schedule, free medical aid, paid leave, p rovident funds and incentives for higher education. It is the first company to i ntroduce clause against sexual harassment in its standing order. The group has s tarted a number of educational institutes for public and employees. Notable amon g them are: Tata institution of fundamental research, Tata institute of social s ciences, Tata institute for cancer research & development, National centre for t he performing arts. Right from the founding days the group has always tried to be a part of the soc iety. The group has always put the society first then itself. Mr. J R D Tata onc e said that he could have doubled the company revenues had he resorted to unfair means. When Tata steel was formed the group had a slogan where we came first. Ind icating the social aspects of the company. Jhamshedpur where the plant was set up became the centre point of CSR activities of the company. They started the de velopment program of the city by inviting Sydney and Beatrice for the township p lanning. They appointed Mr. A.V. Thakkar for the execution of the plan. The who le process also involved the elimination of the middleman and money lenders. The company adopted the concept of social service. It set up cooperative society at Bhalubasa. Another major project was undertaken by the group in the famine trac t of Maharashtra. The project was called Devapur Project. The project was to set up schools, provide medicines, clean drinking water and scanty rain. The projec t upon audit was found to be a major success apart from a few deficiencies. The group has always been instrumental in lending helping hand at times of national disasters. They have got all their production units ISO 14 001 certified. There by making sure that they reduce the carbon emission as much as possible. They have made use of recyclable and biodegradable packing materia ls mandatory and treatment of waste water. The production units have been able t o reduce their raw material consumption by 20% using green technologies. The gro up has also initiated a program to save the white sharks and safe guarding the f lora and fauna of Munnar in Kerela. For the new millennium the group initiated a program called thousand trees for thousand days . The group has made it mandator y for all its companies to follow procedures laid down in Global Reporting Initi atives (GRI). International Standards : The company had been following its own style ofCSR. However, it has been an acti ve player in the international arena as well. It has been the first signatory of Global Pact of UN. It also has the distinction of being the first Indian compan y to publish corporate sustainability report as per GRI guide lines. The group has always been lead towards its goals under the light of CSR. Its hea rt, mind and business processes have been designed to meet the CSR foundation of the company. They are: 1995 Tata Council for Community Initiatives provides the superstructure for CSR effo rts across the Group 1995 Tata Business Excellence Model makes sustainable growth a priority and has in cluded this in its Key Enterprises Process 1999 Tata Code of Conduct mandates good governance ethical behavior by organizatio ns as well as each and every employee 2003 Tata Index for Sustainable Development Group Tata s Abroad The group has been always following the policy of being fair and just while deal ing with its employees. But in its overseas acquisitions it has not done the sam e. Since taking over Corus and JLR, it has sacked about 7000 and 2200 employees from them respectively. Out these sacked workers on 600 white collar employees h ave been retrained so that they can be employed elsewhere. Rest has been removed from their jobs with one month pay. This whole episode leaves a big question ma rk on the CSR activity under taken by the Tata Group. Conclusion: The group has been lead by big ideals. It has been the analogy of CSR in India f or almost a century and half. The group has tried to contribute and give back to the society as much as possible.
