The Robert Half 2011 Salary Guide forecasts average starting salaries for finance and accounting professionals working for small and medium-sized enterprises, larger organisations and within public practice, in seven UK regions: London and South East Midlands North Scotland South Coast South Wales South West

The salaries within this report are based on: Thousands of permanent, temporary and interim placements made by our consultants across the UK Exclusive workplace research we conduct each year with finance and business leaders Feedback from ongoing discussions with thousands of employers and candidates

The salary ranges listed are based on the average figures for each position, excluding variables such as ongoing performance, tenure of service and fluctuating responsibilities. We have excluded bonuses, incentives and other discretionary benefits. Whether those finance team members will enjoy salary increases in the coming year seems very much to depend on their location and the nature of their employer certainly if the results of Robert Halfs CFO survey prove to reflect the national picture. Overall, 29% of those surveyed thought their teams would enjoy salary rises, but those figures rose to 47% for London-based firms and 63% for large or publicly listed companies. The predicted average salary increase across all positions is 2.86%.

Looking ahead to 201 there are varying 1, opinions as to how quickly the market/ economy is going to grow. Recent research has indicated improving trends in many recruitment areas, with businesses cautious on growth prospects but no longer forecasting major job cuts. Research conducted for Robert Half indicates that 85% of UK Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) thought their finance teams would either grow or, at worst, stay the same size in the next 12 months. Finance leaders are feeling more positive about the UKs economic outlook, particularly in the private sector. As confidence grows, companies will need highly skilled staff to leverage the increased business opportunities that accompany a more profitable economic environment.

What is becoming clear is that many companies have placed their finance teams at the heart of the organisation as they look to emerge as winners once the economic recovery gathers pace. While an air of caution remains, increased optimism in business and financial services may result in a strengthened hiring outlook in these areas. Renewed confidence in financial services, in particular, is an indication of the industrys resilience following a period of unprecedented challenge and uncertainty.

Recruitment trends worth noting


Finding the perfect fit for your finance team has never been easy, but today the evidence points to that task becoming even harder. Having created leaner organisations based around their star performers, finance leaders are naturally working hard to retain these business-critical professionals. Even so, we found that 63% of UK CFOs and finance directors are concerned that their retention efforts might prove insufficient to prevent the loss of top finance and accounting talent to other job opportunities. Further evidence for this trend comes from the latest Robert Half Global Financial employment Monitor, which revealed that employers in the UK face challenges finding highly skilled professionals. Almost one-third of UK finance leaders polled said they were struggling to find finance talent, with a further 25% having difficulty finding suitable audit professionals. In addition, a recent Robert Half CFO survey revealed that the effect of additional workloads and stress was the number one concern when finance leaders were asked to think about issues around employee retention. This is a threat to a finance teams performance and stability; it makes highly targeted and well-thought-out recruitment strategies a must. As a result, demand for temporary or interim workers remains strong, with 81% of UK finance leaders saying theyd either increase (10%) or maintain (71%) their usage in the coming months.

Comparing the regions


The annual Robert Half Executive Round-Table series enables us to gain an insight into how the UK economic and employment picture differs region by region. The 2010 series focused on commerciality, which, though universally regarded as important to a finance teams success, seems currently to differ in practice depending on location. For example, nearly three quarters (73%) of attendees at our Bristol event felt they had sufficient commerciality in their teams, but their peers in Birmingham and Milton Keynes delivered the opposite verdict. Meanwhile a much smaller majority of attendees in London and Manchester felt they were under-skilled in this area. However, 90% of participants felt they had the tools to develop these skills in-house, tools that include requiring finance approval of commercial decisions, giving finance staff personal responsibility for certain business areas and placing them in project teams.

Todays in-demand skills


As weve already noted, demand for audit and compliance skills seems to be outstripping supply within the UK. Some 25% of finance leaders we spoke with reported difficulty in filling audit positions, while 16% were having trouble securing compliance skills both well above the global average. Returning to the theme of commerciality, for many finance leaders the ideal candidate should have a strong technical background and commitment to accuracy coupled with a willingness to acquire and use a broader knowledge of the business. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are critical in this regard too. Finance and accounting professionals who can achieve a successful balance of these attributes were seen as having the key to more satisfying roles as well as better career prospects. Looking more closely at specific commercial skills, the importance of knowing the business inside out was stressed time and again when referring to finance playing a full part in the strategic decisionmaking process. Also, by partnering with the wider business, commercial finance professionals can actively assist with tendering for new contracts, provide meaningful management information that supports good strategic decision making and ensure theres a good control environment so potential issues can be spotted and dealt with before they become a threat.

Sector snapshots
Here we give a brief overview of the recruitment environment in the UKs principal industry sectors. tecHnoloGy and telecoMS There are more than a million people employed in the UKs information and communication technologies (ICT) industries, with research from the government-supported body e-skills UK showing continued growth in demand for ICT staff. conStRuction/PRoPeRty One of the sectors hit hardest by the recession is now being hit by public sector spending cuts at the same time that major projects, such as Londons 2012 Olympic Park, are nearing completion. However, some construction firms are bucking the trend and remain optimistic, while a glance at the construction press reveals significant infrastructure projects still being put to tender. Retail/FMcG The retail and associated industries are major employers, providing more than 4.5 million jobs in the UK. Although hit by the economic slowdown and fragile consumer confidence, plus the inexorable rise of online shopping, retail research specialist Verdict estimates that over the five years (200712) the UKs total retail floor space will grow by 5.8%. It also believes that health and beauty will be the strongest performing sector during this period. 6

eneRGy, utilitieS and MininG The UKs energy and utilities sectors are huge and geographically diverse, ranging from offshore oil and gas exploration to waste water treatment. While the UK is not expected to remain self-sufficient in oil after 2016, there is a fast-growing renewable energy sector, encouraged by government support for environmentally friendly solutions to the nations ever-growing energy needs. enteRtainMent and Media This sector will be increasingly influenced by consumer demand for digital technologies, according to accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which has published an annual review of the entertainment and media market for the past 1 years. 1 PwC forecasts continued growth for the sector during the next five years, but market fragmentation and the need to constantly evolve business models will surely place added emphasis on finance and accounting professionals, who will be charged with holding things together during this time of flux. tRavel, touRiSM and HoSPitality This is a vast, geographically spread and varied sector, boosted in recent years by overseas tourists attracted by a weak pound plus a trend among UK citizens towards domestic holiday making. Independent research conducted for VisitBritain estimates that the UK tourism sector will account for 2.9 million jobs by 2020, around a quarter of a million more than today.

Public SectoR/cHaRity Austerity measures following the general election are sure to have some negative effects on the UK public sector, which employs more than six million people across the country. Commentators expect up to 10% of these jobs to go in the coming years, with the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, Wales, Northern Ireland and North-West England set to suffer most, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research. However, this downturn should be set against a long period of relative plenty for this sector; indeed, recent falls in overall public sector employment are the first in 16 years. Retail bankinG This sector covers the financial services provided by the high-street banks for individual customers and small businesses through their branch network. The banks have rebounded from the shocks that saw major players, such as Northern Rock, Lloyds TSB and RBS, either fully or partly nationalised, with economists now predicting that the government will eventually turn a healthy profit on its shareholdings. The governments support has also confirmed the banking industrys status as too important to be allowed to fail.

inSuRance The insurance industry encompasses general insurance providing risk cover to individuals, businesses and governments plus life insurance, which is an industry in its own right as well as a key element of the pensions and financial services sectors. According to the Association of British Insurers, the UK insurance industry is the largest in Europe and third largest in the world. It employs almost a third of a million people. ManuFactuRinG Britain remains the worlds sixth biggest manufacturer by output, with the sector providing more than 2.5 million jobs according to the most recent statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics. A reduction in capital allowance rates, announced in the 2010 Budget, could adversely affect capital-intensive manufacturing firms, although a far greater threat could come from future skills shortages. The senior academic Prof. John Bryson recently predicted that thousands of hi-tech manufacturing jobs might go unfilled if education and training are not improved.

The employer brand: reaching out to the best talent

Speed and sophistication are becoming the two key weapons in the battle for top accounting and finance talent. A survey by Robert Half found that it currently takes an average of four weeks to fill a stafflevel role and five weeks to secure a new manager. Unfortunately, this time is a luxury that many hiring managers simply cant afford: the best people are not short of options and employers that delay the hiring process risk losing them to other opportunities. In addition, many professionals are seeing beyond pure salary and placing greater importance on flexibility of working hours and workspace, as well as incentives that are more closely aligned to performance and other semi-tangible factors. For example, a Robert Half survey of 3,000 British workers found that salary came below location and working hours as priorities when looking for a new job. Putting together these more rounded and sophisticated packages requires finance to work more closely with the HR team, which can either provide or gain access to the relevant expertise as well as offering insight into ways to save time and money with the hiring process.

Social Media: MoRe tHan juSt tHe lateSt Fad? From an employer perspective, the advent of social media networks was initially greeted with a mixture of disdain or outright scorn. Many large organisations were moved to block access to certain sites, worried that employees would waste working time logging on to them. However, new research from Robert Half has revealed that almost two-thirds of employees never look at their personal social media networks while at work, while of those that do, just under half spend less than 30 minutes a day logged on. The explosive growth of professional networking sites, most notably LinkedIn, has also created a new dynamic in the recruitment marketplace. For example, 26% of young individuals (24 and under) feel it is important for employers to have some form of social media presence, while 12% of workers we surveyed said they have used social networking sites to look for a job. Companies are finding that giving senior managers licence to use Twitter for a mixture of personal and business-related messages is helping to give their organisation a human face that can be attractive to both potential and existing employees.

In todays dynamic corporate environment these are constantly changing, so it can be more valuable to appoint someone with the skills to respond to both your immediate and longer term business needs, rather than simply replacing like with like. Once youre into the recruitment phase, there are several tips you can follow to make the process run more smoothly: Make sure youre clear on the precise skills required for the position, creating a targeted job description Stay involved throughout the recruitment process you have the best understanding of what the role entails Make use of industry organisations and professional networks to ensure youve cast your net as wide as possible Use telephone interviews to filter your crop of candidates before the face-to-face stage Consider bringing in candidates on a temporary basis this reduces workload pressure on existing team members and lets you take a close look at the candidate in action Work with a specialist recruiting firm that can give you access to pre-assessed candidates, including those who are not actively seeking new jobs but would be open to the right opportunity.
