edu NAME OF PROJECT: Educating Pregnant Teens DATE OF PROJECT : Oct 01, 2011 12:00 AM SCHOOL OF NURSING: University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh College Of Nursing NAME OF AGENCY: Oshkosh College of Nursing PROJECT DETAILS: This aggregate project was geared toward pregnant teens and new teen mothers at Neenah Public High School. The teens attended two teaching sessions. The first teaching session topics focused on pregnancy related issues and the second teaching session topics focused on newborn issues. Power points were used to highlight the information about each topic and brochures were distributed at the end of the teaching sections. These brochures summarized the most important information given during the teaching sessions. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS/COLLABORATION: Neenah Public Health Nurses PROJECT OUTCOMES: The teens answer questions about the presentation. BARRIERS/CHALLENGES: Finding a time when most of the pregnant teens and teen mothers were able to attend MATERIALS/TOOLS DEVELOPED: Two Power points and four brochures MAIN COMPETENCY DOMAIN ADDRESSED IN THIS PROJECT : Communication Skills DOMAINS : Analytic Assessment Skills, Communication Skills, Cultural Competency Skills ANALYTIC ASSESSMENT SKILLS: Selects and defines variables relevant to defined public health problems, Identifies relevant and appropriate data and information sources POLICY DEVELOPMENT / PROGRAM PLANNING SKILLS: Collects, summarizes, and interprets information relevant to an issue, Develops mechanisms to monitor and evaluate programs for their effectiveness and quality COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Communicates effectively both in writing and orally, or in other ways, Solicits input from individuals and organizations, Advocates for public health programs and resources, Leads and participates in groups to address specific issues, Uses the media, advanced technologies, and community networks to communicate information CULTURAL COMPETENCY SKILLS: Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from diverse cultural,

socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyle preferences, Develops and adapts approaches to problems that take into account cultural differences COMMUNITY DIMENSIONS OF PRACTICE SKILLS: Collaborates with community partners to promote the health of the population, Accomplishes effective community engagements BASIC PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES SKILLS: Defines, assesses, and understands the health status of populations, determinants of health and illness, factors contributing to health promotion and disease prevention, and factors influencing the use of health services FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS: LEADERSHIP AND SYSTEMS THINKING SKILLS: Identifies internal and external issues that may impact delivery of essential public health services (i.e. strategic planning) PUBLIC HEALTH WHEEL INTERVENTIONS: Outreach - Outreach locates populations-of-interest or populationsat-risk and provides information about the nature of the concern, what can be done about it, and how services can be obtained., Screening - Screening identifies individuals with unrecognized health risk factors or asymptomatic disease conditions in populations., Health Teaching - Health teaching communicates facts, ideas, and skills that change knowledge, attitudes, values, beliefs, behaviors, and practices and skills of individuals, families, systems, and/or communities., Collaboration - Collaboration commits two or more persons or organizations to achieving a common goal through enhancing the capacity of one or more of them to promote and protect health., Advocacy - Advocacy pleads someones cause or acts on someones behalf, with a focus on developing the community, system, individual, or familys capacity to plead their own cause or act on their own behalf.
