The terminal markings of rotating electrical machines will be unified in the future, in accordance with the revised standard EN 60034-8:2002. Accordingly, all national standards, that are contrary to the EN 60034-8:2002 have to be retracted, until 1st October 2005. In Germany, this refers to the old DIN EN 60034-8:1972 + A1:1990 + A2:1996 (VDE 0530-parts 8). Motor manufacturers, organised by the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI), will change to the new standard from 1st January 2005. Therefore, substantial alterations will be made to the documentation and terminal markings from the beginning of 2005. This flyer is to inform all market partners of the joint transition to be made from 1st January 2005 and to briefly illustrate some of the essential changes to the standard.
1. Changes to the terminal markings The connection diagram for a three-phase winding with two tappings is a good example of how the terminal markings and symbols are to be amended.

General information concerning EN 60034-8 The standard applies to AC and DC machines and specifies: rules for the identification of winding terminal points marking of winding terminals direction of rotation connection between terminal markings and direction of rotation terminal marking and accessories connection diagrams for machines for general applications.

Diagram 1: Three-phase winding, two tappings per element in accordance with the new EN 60034-8 and the old DIN VDE 0530 part 8, respectively.
2: Alteration of the function designations for DC motors The code letters, which have been specified for direct current and single-phase commutator machines, remain largely unchanged. As previously for example, the code letter B stands for a reversing pole winding. Lesser changes, however, were also undertaken, an example of this being that the code letter A, is now used only for an armature winding, which consists of windings that have been connected together. For armature winding only, the code letter applicable is X.
The marking of an auxiliary terminal is now made by marking the additional equipment in connection with: a number in front of the code letter, depicts the respective circuit or unit; a number after the code letter, depicts the function of the conductor.
Diagram 2: Example of an arrangement of a thermistor, with positive temperature coefficient with two conductors. Comment: In the case of only one circuit, the first number can be omitted. Recommendation: The polarity should be marked with + and .
4: Defining the direction of rotation The direction of rotation is that which can be seen when looking directly at the drive end. If the machines are connected in accordance with the standardised terminal markings, then the direction of rotation is clockwise. In all other cases, including machines constructed for only a single direction of rotation, the direction of rotation must be marked by an easily visible arrow.
5: Information concerning connection diagrams for machines for common applications The EN 60034-8:2002 contains many connection diagrams as well as general rules for terminal markings and how they should be used for common applications.

Note: The transition to the new connection markings, in accordance with the EN 60034-8:2002, will be gradually phased in for new orders from 1st January 2005. There is no obligation to modify machines requiring maintenance or repair, which were supplied in accordance with the old standard (operating in non-compliance under a variance or continuation permit).
