CEOs Expect Modest Compensation Growth in 2011


VC-Funded Execs Bullish re 2012 Salary, Bonus
CEOs expect their total cash compensation to rise about 6% in 2011, driven primarily by robust
bonus expectations, according to a recent poll by ExpertCEO. Looking ahead to 2012, CEOs
expect better growth in both base salary and performance bonuses, reflecting optimism about next
years overall economic conditions.
110 senior executives, primarily from small to mid-sized businesses, participated in ExpertCEOs
Fall 2011 CEO Compensation Survey. The average revenue for participating companies was
approximately $25 million. Poll highlights include the following observations:

For 2011, mean total cash compensation of $344,000 is expected to rise from $326,000 in
2010. Though 2011 base salaries are projected to increase less than 1%, participants
receiving performance bonuses anticipate payments 16% above actual 2010 levels. For 2012,
respondents believe total cash compensation will increase by an additional 9% to $376,000,
with bonus growth again exceeding raises in base salaries.

Venture-funded companies accounted for about 40% of participants. These executives


estimate 2012 total cash compensation increases of 16%, with roughly equivalent growth in
base salary and performance bonuses. Respondents are eyeing total cash compensation of
approximately $413,000, 70% of which they estimate will come from base salary.

About two-thirds of all respondents expect to receive a discretionary bonus in 2011, up from
55% in 2010. The mean bonus amount in 2010 was $103,000 (32% of total compensation)
and is expected to jump to $120,000 in 2011 (35% of total), with even greater optimism in
2012, where three-quarters of respondents expect to receive bonuses that will average
$138,000 or 37% of total compensation.

Among privately held organizations, venture-backed firms offer the highest total average
compensation: $356,000 in 2011 vs $309,000 for leaders of family-owned and other privately
owned businesses.

Technology and Media/Internet CEOs, 68% of the respondents, expect to earn total
compensation of $391,000 in 2011, significantly larger than the $254,000 for those in all
other industries. All other includes service-based sectors, consumer goods and retail
operations.
