Background Information

Fibers are all around us. They are thin pieces of a material twisted together to make threads, yarn, or rope. The thread, yarn, or rope is then used to make cloth for clothes, furniture covers, carpets, and many other things. We all carry bers with us from our clothes, our houses, and any place we have visited. Wherever you travel you leave bers and you pick up other bers. Investigators can use bers to help solve crimes. Fibers can sometimes tell you where a person has been or who they have seen/touched. The problem with bers is many are massproduced (a lot of one kind of thing is made from the same kind of bers - like jeans from Levi's). This means many thousands of people might have the same ber on their body or in their house. There are two groups of bers: natural and synthetic (or human-made). Wool, silk, cotton, and linen are all natural bers. They come from animals, insects, or plants. In the 1800's scientists began searching for a ber that could be made in the lab so that people would not have to depend on plants or animals for their supply of thread. The rst synthetic ber made in a laboratory was rayon. It is made from wood pulp and cotton. Since the invention of rayon many other bers have been invented. Nylon, polyester, acrylic, and spandex are all synthetic bers because they are made by humans. Fibers might seem alike when you look at two black shirts, but think about the thickness, the color, and the texture of the bers. All bers are different, and using a microscope and a match you can often gure out what kind of ber you have.

Crime

On Saturday morning a woman was found dead in the stairway of an apartment building. The woman, who lived in the apartment building, had been robbed and beaten. Crime scene investigators recovered several different bers from the victim's body. All but one of the bers matched clothes in her apartment. This ber was red colored. Witnesses said they saw a tall young man in a red jacket enter the victim's apartment Saturday night. Police therefore began questioning all men that lived in the apartment building and searching their apartments. Anyone with a red colored jacket was detained and interviewed longer. Fibers were taken from each jacket to test and compare to the ber found on the victim.

3. The LAB
Introduction
In today's lab you will be looking at four bers. The bers are attached to pieces of tape. You'll be looking at the color of the ber and any other macroscopic (can be seen without a microscope) observations you can make. You will then be doing a ame test to observe the reaction of the ber to heat.

Procedure
1. Put on your goggles. These are necessary for safety. 2. Examine ber A. ! Write any observations you can in the Macroscopic data table.
(color? thickness? straight or curly? single fiber, or many smaller fibers?)

3. Using the forceps, place ber A near, but not in the ame. ! Does the ber melt? light on re? curl? ! Record your observations in the Flame Test data table.

4. Using the forceps, touch ber A gently to the ame, then take it out. ! Does it light on re quickly, slowly, or not at all? ! Does it melt, drip, or sputter? ! When you took it out, did it continue to burn, glow, or go out? ! What did the ber smell like? Compare it to another smell. ! What is left by the burned ber? Ashes, a blob, a hard bead? ! Record your observations in the Flame Test data table.

5. Repeat the above steps for bers B, C, and D.
