Editorial: Uniting Against Illegal Fishing In South Korea, stronger measures are to be enforced upon illegal fishermen, including sturdier safeguards for enforcement officers, after one South Korean officer was killed in a violent clash with Chinese fishermen. The number of patrol ships is to be increased, as is the hazard pay officers receive. Ministers vowed to crack down on illegal fishermen and impose much tougher punishments on offenders. The first binding global agreement to focus on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing has been ratified by Norway, Sri Lanka, the EU and Burma. Another 18 parties have expressed intention to ratify. Arising from this agreement, a bill has been introduced in the US prevent pirate fishing vessels from entering US ports to offload illegally caught seafood. The Administration bill would benefit US fishermen, seafood buyers, and consumers by keeping illegal seafood out of global trade. In Uganda, it is estimated that the country loses US$180 million annually in foreign earnings to illegal fishing. The EU has said that it will impose measures against third countries that it believes are allowing unsustainable fishing. The measures proposed are particularly to do with Iceland and the Faroe Islands and the mackerel situation. The measures foreseen will range from restricting imports of fish products from the concerned stock as well as associated fish species to prohibiting the conclusion of

chartering agreements with economic operators from countries allowing non-sustainable fishing. Tomas Heidar, Chief Negotiator for Iceland on Mackerel Fisheries said that the EU should focus more on finding a solution to the mackerel issue, rather than put effort into imposing import restrictions. Who determines what is sustainable fishing - are the EU currently fishing sustainably? Research published last week showed that total allowable catches were often set higher than scientific recommendations. This Week's Feature Articles We have 5 new features this week: Advances In Koura Farming In the early 1960s, the New Zealand Department of Fisheries did some trials on koura (NZ freshwater crayfish) farming. As a result, they determined koura would not be viable, as they would take three years to reach a weight of 35g. Current trials have produced far different results from those early days, with fish averaging 55g in two years and broodstock males in excess of 200g. Managing Parasites Since the discovery of whirling disease in aquaculture facilities in Colorado, many management changes for salmonids have taken place. Carolyn Gun, Assistant State Fish Pathologist at the CDOW Aquatic Animal Health Lab looks at how the disease affects fish and how producers can deal with it. Oyster Production Within The Multiple Uses Of Estuaries Sophie Hockley, University College, London discusses oyster production within the multiple uses of estuaries as part of her fieldwork research for an MSc dissertation. Agricultural Commodities: Fisheries The decline in the value of Australian fisheries production over the past decade is attributable to a decrease in the value of production of higher value species groups, such as rock lobster, prawns, abalone and tuna, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) December Agricultural Commodities report. Feed Outlook - December 2011 World 2011/12 corn production is forecast up 8.5 million tons this month to a record 868 million tons, mostly due to a large increase in China's production based on recently published government estimates, according to Tom Capehart and Edward Allen in the latest report from the USDA Economic Research Service.
