The on-board computer offers you a great many functions which will make your journeys even safer and more of a pleasure. The GPS navigation system renders it unnecessary to consult printed maps or search for road signs and brings you accurately to any destination shown on the map CD. The radio and the cassette and CD players ensure the best possible signal reception, sound quality and choice of entertainment for all listeners' tastes, and take the monotony out of even the longest journey. The TV with teletext ensures a supply of topical information and provides in-car entertainment while you are waiting. The BMW car phones mean that you can always be contacted and make outgoing telephone calls. The computer calculates data relevant to the journey average fuel consumption, range and estimated time of arrival. It also provides additional safety both before the engine can be started for instance by demanding a code input for the engine immobiliser and when driving, for example by supplying a warning signal to make sure that you do not drive faster than intended. Calling up MENU
Various functions are integrated into the on-board computer. If you call up the top menu (MENU), these are displayed, see page 12. Call up "MENU"

If the screen shows one of the above symbols, you can call up more functions on the menu you have chosen. To do this, turn the right-hand rotary control in the direction of the symbol in question. You can now highlight and select one of the functions shown, see "Selecting function". Depending on the extent of the function, it may take a few seconds for the screen to display the additional functions.<

Operating principle

Last function memory

This function makes it easier for you to call up again the information that you last had on the screen or the function that you were last using before switching off the on-board computer or changing to a different menu. When you switch the on-board computer back on or select the desired function again in "MENU", the computer immediately switches to the menu level you were last using. To interrupt this function if you would like to enter the first menu level when changing over:
Selecting "return" symbol

To return to a previous menu or function level, perform the following action: Select . As described under "Selecting function", the "return" symbol can also be highlighted with the right-hand rotary control, then selected by pressing the control.
Browsing forward and back

If the screen shows one of the above symbols, you can call up more entries in a list. As described under "Selecting function", this symbol can also be highlighted with the right-hand rotary control, then selected by pressing the control.

To enable you to find your way round at a glance, the individual steps to be performed in making each selection are shown beneath the illustration of the corresponding menu. Depending on the operation, the following elements may be involved: > Buttons to press > Functions to select with the righthand rotary control. "Selecting function", see page 16 > The right-hand rotary control with arrows, if it is to be only pressed or only turned. The individual steps are separated by the symbol.
The last operation takes you out of the date input routine.
An example: adjusting date

The structure and operating principle are illustrated here, using the procedure for adjusting the date as an example: 1. Call up "MENU"
You can also choose the order in which the date is expressed: either the days (dd) first, followed by the months (mm) or in the opposite order. To exit a function or adjustment option that has been selected inadvertently, select it a further time. You can now select any of the other functions.<

Selecting settings
Depending on the country for which your vehicle is supplied, the on-board computer has specific basic settings for all displays. These settings can also be made as preferred individually. 1. Call up "MENU"

You can adjust the following: > "Screen" To select the screen layout (split or full), see page 15 > "Clock" > "Date" To adjust the time and date and alter their form of expression > "Navi. volume" To adjust the volume of the audio source in relation to the navigation instructions (min to max) > "Colour set" To select a set of colours for the screen display > "Language" To select the language of the display texts. 22nGPS Only enter data when the car is standing still, and always obey the traffic regulations and road signs in the event of any contradiction between the traffic situation and the instructions given by the navigation system. Failure to do so may result in an infringement of traffic laws and put the car's occupants and other road users at risk.< Do not place any metal objects, e.g. umbrellas, on the rear window shelf (saloon model), as GPS reception may be disturbed in view of the location of the GPS aerial, and the navigation system may fail to operate precisely.< The navigation system renders it unnecessary to read maps during a journey. It therefore constitutes a significant contribution towards improved road safety. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. This is part of the navigation system, and uses satellite signals to determine your car's position. As a result, the navigation system is able to guide you efficiently and reliably to any map destination you select.
Map CD
Map CDs: changing
Map CDs contain road map covering one or more countries or regions. If your navigation system indicates that you are about to leave the area covered by the map on the CD currently inserted, you should change the map CD in the navigation system. To change the map CD: 1. Map CDs are inserted in the navigation computer on the rear left in the luggage compartment. To be quite certain that your car's navigation system has the latest road network information at its disposal, always load it with the most recent CD version of the digitised road map. Map CDs, like conventional road maps, are periodically updated on the basis of observations and survey data. Map CDs can be purchased from BMW Service; see the list of Service outlets.< The CD is ejected from the navigation computer (press the button several times if necessary) 2. Remove the CD 3. Insert a new CD 4. Wait for approx. eight seconds until the contents of the new CD have been read in.

Entering a destination address manually
Note the following special features: > You can correct the last input with . To delete the entire input line, hold the right-hand rotary control pressed > The wordmatch principle makes the input of names easier. This principle enables you to enter alternative spellings and automatically completes a name that has been recognised beyond doubt, see page 45 > Selection of a country, city or road can be interrupted at any time by selecting > If the inputs in a selection menu are not made within eight seconds, this process will have to be repeated.
Selecting destination country

If the name of a country appears on the monitor in white letters, data for more than one country are stored on the map CD. To select Germany as the destination country: 1. Turn right-hand rotary control until the name of the country displayed is highlighted. The display now shows: "Country?"
2. Press right-hand rotary control. A list of available countries is displayed 3. Select "Deutschland" (Germany). The selection is transferred to the destination input. You can skip input of the country or place if you wish to retain previous inputs.<

"City ?" is marked; 1. Press the right-hand rotary control to start the input procedure 2. Select "M" The selected letter is highlighted 3. Select the remaining letters of "Mnchen" (Munich) until the place name is recognised beyond doubt and the corresponding entry in the list is marked 4. Select "Mnchen" (Munich). The city name is accepted.
2. Select "L". The selected letter is highlighted 3. Select the remaining letters of "Leopoldstrae" until the road name is recognised beyond doubt and the corresponding entry in the list is marked 4. Select "Leopoldstrae". The road name is accepted.
5. Select "Mnchen, KFS" from the list as appropriate (KFS = autonomous city). The city name is accepted.

If you do not know the exact name of a place or its spelling, it can also be selected from the list once the first letter has been entered. Some map CDs in addition list further places or suburbs under the placename you have selected.<

It may also be possible to enter a house number for certain roads, depending on the data stored on the map CD. The option of entering these will not appear if no house numbers for a road are stored on it. In this case, a junction if available can be selected, or you can start destination guidance straight away.<
If you do not know the exact name of a road or its spelling, it can also be selected from the list once the first letter has been entered.< 5. Select "Leopoldstrae" from the list as appropriate. The road name is accepted. If no road is specified, destination guidance will end at the edge of the city or town.<
Entering house number or junction

After entering the road, you can select a house number or junction, e. g. house number "194". 1. Select "House No. / junction?" 2. Select "House number" 3. Select "1" 4. Select the remaining digits of the house number 5. Select "Enter". The house number is accepted.
Selecting the destination from a map

1. Enter the desired city, see page 25 2. Select "Map" 3. Press right-hand rotary control. A selection menu is displayed, see also page 23 4. Select "Dest. input map".
After the scale has been altered, it may take a few seconds for the map to appear.<

If the scale is greater than 1 km, the function "Save dest." cannot be selected.<

If you know the city but not the exact position of the road, the system offers you maps on which you can identify your destination with cross-hairs, then transfer this information for destination guidance.

If necessary, change the scale: > Turn right-hand rotary control until the box with the details of the scale is highlighted > Turn the right-hand rotary control again to select the desired scale > To save the scale, either do not adjust the right-hand rotary control for a few seconds, or press it.
Localise the destination with the crosshairs: > Turn right-hand rotary control to mark the cursor for the desired direction > Hold right-hand rotary control pressed until the map is moved in the desired direction beneath the crosshairs > Release right-hand rotary control to retain the new position > Select the other cursor if desired > Hold right-hand rotary control pressed to move the map in the other direction > Release to retain the new position.

6. Transfer selection for destination guidance: Select "Save dest.". The destination input map can be used even if no place-name has been specified. A suitable scale should be selected at the outset in order to select a place in this way.< If you would like to see your current position on the map, select "Position" with the right-hand rotary control, see page 44.
Selecting a destination via Information

1. Enter the desired city, see page 25 2. Select "Information" 3. Select "Info on destination". Various types of destination are listed 4. Select the desired type of destination, e.g. "Hotels & restaurants"
7. Select the remaining letters until the hotel name is recognised beyond doubt and the corresponding entry in the list is marked 8. Select the entry highlighted in the list. Further information is called up in text form or as symbols. The extent of the information and the range of symbols depend on the map CD currently in use.<
If you do not know the exact name of the hotel, it can also be selected from the list once the first letter has been entered.< If a BMW car telephone is installed in your car, you can mark the telephone number of a destination and dial the number simply by pressing the knob.<

You may for instance be looking for a particular destination in a city, such as a hotel, restaurant, petrol station, the nearest BMW Service, a tourist attraction or a hospital, but do not know the exact address.

Last destinations
Selecting further interesting destinations

"Info on location" provides you with an overview of possible destinations in the vicinity. A selection of up to 10 entries of a particular type of destination is displayed, arranged in order of distance, with an arrow indicating the direction from your current position. "Country information" enables you to choose from a range of particularly interesting destinations, e. g. tourist attractions in the country you are visiting, seats of government, main exhibition centres and show grounds, and major airports.
Returning to a recently chosen destination

The last ten destinations used are automatically saved. You can call up these addresses: 1. Select "Last destinations" 2. Select "Retrieve address". A list of the last ten destinations used is displayed 3. Select the desired address. The address is transferred for destination guidance.

You can delete any of the addresses saved for the last ten destinations used: 1. Select "Last destinations" 2. Select "Delete address". The list of the last ten destinations used is displayed 3. Select the desired address.

The navigation system allows you to specify the type of route you would like to take. You can thus define the priorities according to which the route is determined: > "via motorway" > "no motorway" > "fastest route" > "shortest route" > "avoid tolls". The navigation system plans routes according to fixed principles. These depend on the road characteristics that are stored on the map CD. For this reason, the route proposed by the system will not necessarily be the one the driver expects from experience.<
You can alter the type of route both when selecting a destination, and as often as desired while destination guidance is in operation the system will always adapt to your wishes: 1. Choose "Route selection ?" 2. Select the preferred type of route. The appropriate option is highlighted 3. Select .
The chosen route selection is displayed and used for destination guidance. Altering the specified type of route during destination guidance, see page 36.<
Starting destination guidance
33n The anticipated time of arrival and the distance to the destination (distance, see page 85) remain visible at the bottom right of the screen. You will still be guided to your destination if you choose another on-board computer function, e.g. radio or on-board computer. A spoken instruction will be given and a visual display will appear on the monitor well before the next turning, informing you of any change of direction required.<
When you have entered or selected the complete destination address, the city and, if appropriate, the road name and house number are displayed on the screen; "Dest. guide" is highlighted. Press the right-hand rotary control to start destination guidance. If the split screen layout has been chosen, when destination guidance has been started the anticipated arrival time and the distance to the destination are displayed while the navigation computer is calculating the route to the destination. Calculation of a new route, displaying it on the screen and calculating the exact distance to the destination may take up to one minute.<
The right half of the screen shows the name of the road into which the arrow is instructing you to turn, the distance to the junction, the direction of travel and your current location. You in addition hear directions in the form of spoken announcements, which you can have repeated as required, see page 40.

Calling up route map

If you have selected full screen, you can display a map showing the planned route during destination guidance. 1. Press right-hand rotary control. A selection menu is displayed, see also page 23 2. Select "Route map". The route map is called up. To change to map positioning, select .<
Changing the scale

Irrespective of which screen layout is selected (split/full), you can adapt the scale of the route map to your requirements. 1. Turn right-hand rotary control to highlight the box with the details of the scale 2. Turn the right-hand rotary control again to select the desired scale 3. To save the scale, either do not adjust the right-hand rotary control for a few seconds, or press it. The visible section of the map changes after a few seconds.
Altering map positioning

If the scale is < 2 km, you can choose whether to align the map with north at the top, or according to the direction of your chosen route. 1. Press right-hand rotary control. A selection menu is displayed, see also page 23 2. Select "Map positioning". A further selection menu is called up 3. Select the desired map positioning. After the map positioning has been altered, the route map may take several seconds to appear.<
Displaying route
The way the route map is positioned affects the screen layout as follows: > If pointing towards north, the map gradually shifts beneath the direction symbol > If pointing in the direction of travel, a new map is generated when the direction symbol reaches the edge of the section of map. The map may take several seconds to adapt to a change of direction.<

You can call up a list of cities and roads during destination guidance. This list is based on the route proposed by the navigation system. The length of the individual streets or roads is also indicated. To display the route list during destination guidance: 1. Press right-hand rotary control. 3. Select "Route list". The route list is displayed 4. Turn the right-hand rotary control to browse through the list. Altering a section of route

You can also instruct the GPS navigation system to deviate from planned sections of the route during destination guidance. You can state the distance you wish to travel before returning to the original route. 1. Press right-hand rotary control. A selection menu is displayed, see also page 23 2. Select "New route" 3. Turn the right-hand rotary control to select the desired distance. Values of between 1 and 10 km are available
4. Press right-hand rotary control to save the desired distance. The system will return you automatically to the new route at the next opportunity. To help you avoid traffic jams and other road congestion, your navigation system displays traffic information received by your car's radio or by BMW ASSIST*. See the next section "Traffic information".<
The new type of specified route is used for the remainder of the journey. The system may require up to one minute to calculate the new route and call it up on the screen.<

Activating traffic information

You can receive TMC traffic information via your radio see page 58, and have it displayed on the monitor screen during destination guidance. To activate the TMC traffic information function, during destination input 1. Select "Traffic information" 2. Select "RDS-TMC". "TMC" appears in light grey in the bottom line of the screen. The display changes to green as soon as a TMC channel is received. Traffic information is also added to the "Message list" as it is received.
Calling up traffic information

To obtain further information on the traffic problem: Select "Traffic information". You will receive detailed information on the problem. To avoid the congestion: Select "Diversion". The navigation system calculates a new route and then returns to destination guidance mode. When you are approximately 50 km (30 miles) from the last possible exit or if you have selected another on-board computer mode with the destination guidance mode still active, you are automatically prompted to take a diversion.<

RDS Radio Data System
The limitations from which all non-stationary radio receivers suffer are compensated for in part by a variety of ingenious systems: The Radio Data System (RDS) broadcasts additional information on the VHF (FM) waveband. RDS stations therefore offer the following features: > Where a radio station is broadcast on several frequencies, the radio automatically switches to whichever frequency offers the best reception > Once the RDS signals have been processed, the station name appears in the display > Additional information can be shown or called up in the display (e. g. announcements in text form transmitted by the station). RDS data can, however, only be registered if reception conditions are good. Where reception is poor or in the event of interference, the station name may take some time to appear in the display.
Your car radio is designed for reception of the VHF (FM), LW (AM), MW (AM) and SW (AM) wavebands. Selecting waveband
A display with the current settings appears on the screen. The multiple memory levels mean that the keys for the wavelength perform several different functions. Each time FM is pressed, you switch between FM and FMD (diversity level, see page 52). Each time AM is pressed, you switch between the LW/LWA, MW/MWA and SW/SWA wavebands (automatic storing, see page 55).<

Scan station search automatically plays a brief sample of stations with a strong reception signal, one after the other. 1. Call up selection menu
Diversity function
To ensure the best possible reception, this radio has an RDS diversity function, i.e. it is equipped with two separate VHF receivers. One of these supplies the selected station (FM), the other searches continuously for other frequencies which are transmitting the same station, and for RDS stations which can be received (FMD). If the reception quality of the selected station deteriorates, but no alternative frequency can be found, the frequency last selected appears on the screen. Some radio stations transmit at very low power and therefore have only a limited range; furthermore, if they only operate on a single frequency, RDS and diversity will be unable to find a signal offering better-quality reception. The FMD memory level lists the stations offering the best reception on each waveband. A station can be selected from this list and memorised with a button of your choice (16), see page 54.<

Programme type (PTY)

You can also search for a station by programme type (PTY). Via RDS (Radio Data System), certain stations broadcast information that is flashed up briefly on the screen when their frequency is selected; this information tells you what type of programme is being received: news, sports, pop, culture, etc.

To avoid the risk of damage:
Turn one of the reels e. g. with the aid of a ballpoint pen, to take up any tape slack. Insert the cassette in the tape slot again and wind the entire tape once in each direction, to make sure tape is wound evenly. If this message appears on the screen again, the cassette in question should no longer be used. TAPE CLEAN This message appears twice in succession when a cassette is inserted, after 50 hours of operation. It simplifies estimating the time intervals between cleaning operations. Care of cassettes, see the brochure "Looking after your car".

Dolby B and C are a noise suppression system for cassette replay. High frequencies are raised during recording and suppressed during replay. As audio hiss consists mainly of high frequencies and occurs above all during replay, it is reduced in this way. Dolby and the symbol are registered trade marks of Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
Music search
The music search can only function if there are breaks at least four seconds long between the tracks on the tape.< Activating music search
Press twice briefly or once for longer. The tape automatically switches to the other side when the end is reached. To interrupt fast forward/rewind:

Only switch on when playing cassettes that were recorded with Dolby B or Dolby C, as reproduction will otherwise sound dull.<

The tape will be wound forward until the next piece of music is detected. At the end of the tape, it switches automatically to the other side. To interrupt the fast forward movement:

Press until the best audio reproduction is obtained. The set changes between Dolby B, Dolby C and Dolby off. The selected noise suppression setting is indicated by " B" or " C".

To load or empty it, the CD magazine has to be removed from the CD changer. 1. Slide the flap to the right.
Loading/unloading CD magazine
When adding CDs to or removing them from the CD magazine, hold them only at the edge and do not touch the reflective sensing area.< The CD compartments in the changer have the same numbers as the CD selector buttons on the radio.

Starting and stopping a CD

If the CDs in the magazine have been changed, the CD in the lowest compartment occupied starts to play first, e.g. CD 1, track 1.< If you play CDs that you have recorded yourself, malfunctions such as pauses may occur.< Press as often as necessary until the control line changes to the desired audio source (cassette or radio). Operating temperatures
Only use the CD changer at temperatures between 15 6 and +60 6, otherwise it may malfunction. Even when switched off, the unit should not be exposed to temperatures beyond 25 6 or +85 6.<

Atmospheric humidity
A high level of humidity inside the device may cause the laser beam focusing lens to fog over and prevent the CD from being played.
Precautions when using laser equipment

The BMW CD changer is officially a Class 1 laser product. Do not remove the cover from the housing. Never run the device if its cover is damaged. Otherwise the invisible laser beam could cause serious eye injuries. Repairs or maintenance work must only be carried out by qualified service experts.<
Reminder displays
NO DISC The CD compartment is empty, or a CD has been inserted incorrectly. NO DISCS The magazine is empty. NO MAGAZINE No magazine has been inserted. CD CHECK The contents of the CD are still being read in. HIGH TEMP Operating temperature is too high. Replay commences again automatically when the correct operating temperature has been reached.

However, you can listen to the TV sound while driving. To adjust the volume, turn the left-hand rotary control until the desired volume is obtained.<

Arrival time
The "Arrival" function displays the anticipated time of arrival. The time of arrival is calculated by the navigation computer for the planned route and selected route type, on the basis of your average speed. Conditions: > A value for the distance between the starting point and destination must have been entered manually before the start of the journey via the "Distance" function, or > The destination guidance function of the GPS navigation system must have been started, see page 33. The time of arrival (based on the distance to destination and the calculated route) is adopted automatically. "Arrival" is purely a display function; the value that is shown is expressed in the form that is selected under "Set", see page 19.< The display appears at the top right of the full screen, see page 15. In the split screen, it appears to the right of the lower screen, but only while destination guidance is active, see page 33.<

Emergency de-activation
Emergency de-activation can also be carried out before the three attempts to start the engine or three incorrect code inputs have been made and the alarm sounded. 1. Disconnect the battery and wait about 5 minutes before reconnecting it; see the car's Owner's Handbook 2. Turn the ignition key to position 1.
De-activating the code

When you are required to enter the code (in ignition key position 1): 1. Enter the code 2. Select "Deactivate". To correct the input: Select "Change" and repeat input of the code. After the code has been entered three times incorrectly or after three attempts to start the engine without a code input, an acoustic alarm sounds for 30 seconds, see also Emergency de-activation.
A ten-minute countdown appears on the screen. After the ten minutes have elapsed, you can start the engine.
Auxiliary fuel-burning heater/independent ventilation control

For your own safety please comply with the instructions in the relevant Operating Instructions booklet on the auxiliary fuel-burning heater or independent ventilation control. The instructions below refer only to operation by way of the on-board computer. 1. Call up "MENU"

Setting timeswitch
You can climb into your BMW in the morning and evening to find it at just the right temperature, thanks to the two switch-on times (programmable from ignition key position 1). 1. Select "Aux. heating/vent." 2. Select the desired timeswitch (Timer 1 or Timer 2) 3. Select the hours or minutes settings for the timeswitch
The auxiliary fuel-burning heater/independent ventilation control functions described below are called up from this menu.

Program the switch-on times such that there is sufficient time for the car's interior to warm up before you intend to start your journey. If you wish to use the auxiliary fuelburning heater every day, remember that the switch-on times will need to be reactivated on a daily basis, see page 90.<

Switching direct mode on/off

To raise the temperature inside your car rapidly after a break in your journey. 1. Select "Aux. heating/vent." 2. Select "Aux. heating" or "Aux. vent." (ignition key position 2). The relevant option is highlighted. The auxiliary fuel-burning heater/ventilation control shuts down automatically after 30 minutes.
To reactivate the previous time settings, select the corresponding option again.
