Microchips 3-Phase BLDC Fan Motor Driver is Industrys First With Resistor-Programmable, Sensorless Sinusoidal Architecture
Fully Integrated, Single-Chip, Low-Cost Device Comes in Ultra-Thin, 3x3 mm UDFN Package; Quietly and Efficiently Drives Fans in Portable-Computing Applications
Microchip expanded its sinusoidal, sensorless, 3-phase BLDC fan motor driver portfolio with the MTD6505 the industrys first and only standalone, resistor-programmable driver that enables the selection of multiple back-EMF coefficient ranges. This unique feature allows engineers to design for a wide variety of 3-phase BLDC fan characteristics with a single device, thus saving time and money by standardizing multiple product lines on one driver and very few external components. Additionally, the low-cost driver comes in a 3x3 mm UDFN package with a 0.5 mm thickness for space-constrained applications, such as thin laptops and tiny BLDC fans. To enable high energy efficiency and quiet operation with low acoustic noise and mechanical vibration, the MTD6505 includes a 180-degree sinusoidal drive. Being a sensorless driver means that the MTD6505 eliminates the need for an external HallEffect sensor, reducing both cost and board space. Additionally, the driver provides a number of on-chip protection features to preserve the motors life and avoid harmful operating conditions, including thermal shutdown, over-current limiting and lock-up protection. Microchips customers have been asking for a small, thin, singlechip device that can drive a broad range of 3-phase BLDC fan motor applications and the MTD6505 is the most cost-effective, complete and flexible single-chip device on the market. Microchip also announced the MTD6505 3-Phase BLDC Sensorless Fan Controller Demonstration Board (part # ADM00345), which is expected to be available in January. This demo board comes with a 3-phase BLDC fan and three MTD6505 plug-in modules. Additionally, a free GUI is available for download that simplifies fan monitoring and control with the onboard PIC microcontroller. The MTD6505 motor driver is available today for samples in a 10-pin UDFN package.

Microchip Expands Stand-Alone Real-Time Clock/Calendar Device Family

New, Battery-Backed RTCC Devices Include Faster, 10 MHz SPI Interface, Watchdog Timer, Event Detects and More Memory
Microchip announced a new family of stand-alone Real-Time Clock/Calendar (RTCC) devices. The MCP795WXX/BXX RTCC devices have a 10 MHz SPI interface, non-volatile memory and an effective combination of features at a price lower than most competitors devices, including those with fewer features. The new devices reduce component counts and costs for applications in the smart-energy (e.g., thermostats, power meters and commercial refrigeration); home-appliance (e.g., coffee makers, stoves and microwave ovens); automotive (e.g., dashboard controls, car radios and GPS); consumer-electronic (e.g., office equipment and video systems); and communications markets (e.g., radios, cordless phones, and network systems), among others. The MCP795WXX/BXX RTCC devices feature millisecond alarms and a 10 MHz SPI interface that supports very fast data access, resulting in longer MCU sleep and power-down modes, and less power draw from the battery. Other low-power features include two event-detect inputs that draw minimal current in the RTCC device, but wake the MCU when events such as a switch press or system tampering have occurred. Additionally, the devices include three types of non-volatile memory EEPROM, SRAM and a Unique ID which can be ordered blank or with a pre-programmed MAC address, as a standard product to further reduce component counts and lower costs associated with serialized programming. Along with the automatic battery switchover for backup power, a power-fail time stamp logs the time and duration of any power failure and, for accurate timekeeping over a broad temperature range, the devices feature a wide digital-trimming range that compensates for crystal frequency drift over temperature. In designs where a second low-frequency crystal is used, a boot-clock option provides a 32 kHz clock at power-up, reducing the need for a second crystal. With the new SPI RTCC devices, Microchip offers customers a high-quality timekeeping solution that also meets many of their other system requirements. This is made possible by leveraging Microchips core competencies and integrating an effective combination of features into a single device at a lower cost, which can be passed on to customers. The MCP795XX SPI RTCC PICtail Plus Daughter Board (part # AC164147) will be available for purchase in January 2012. The board will work with Microchips Explorer 16 Development Board (part # DM240001) and PIC18 Explorer Board (part # DM183032) to enable designers to demonstrate the MCP795WXX/BXX RTCC devices in their applications. The MCP795WXX RTCC devices are available today in 14-pin SOIC and TSSOP packages. Samples can be ordered today.

Wi-Fi control a RC car using Flyport and Microsoft Kinect

Driving a car using body movement, from anywhere over Internet
This futuristic application is an example of the Flyport embedded module with Wi-Fi features. Flyport is a smart module with an open source framework, openPICUS, programmable with a free IDE. The module is able to run applications and manage connectivity, all in one. In this application Flyport is connected to the car DC motors, using the PWM pins and it receives commands over Wi-Fi about direction and speed. The control occurs via Microsoft Kinect optical sensor, recognizing the depth of the left foot (to drive) and the hand positions (driving direction) gives us a realistic guide without any physical sensor or marker. The data is sent through a TCP connection, using the ubiquitous Wi-Fi infrastructure, to the Flyport who then proceeds to implement, through the PWM signals, the two engines (one for steering and one with H-bridge for the acceleration). The result is a futuristic interaction between people and embedded, or physical, world. Flyport enables a new scenario of embedded applications or controls, where the natural interface is the body movement. But Flyport is also more than this: it offers a powerful integrated webserver. You can create web pages and interact with the real world through a universal interface: your favorite web browser. Flyport supports also Jquery to let you create stunning graphic apps that you can control also with your iPhone or iPad. Free Live Webinar! Smart Grid Roundtable Available OnDemand Online! Duration: 60 Minutes Sponsored by:

Electronic Designs Smart Grid Roundtable The Smart Grid is without doubt a transformative technology that will change the way consumers deal with energy suppliers over the next ten years or so. At the heart of the Smart Grid is the smart meter, which extends all the way back to the electric utility on one side and all the electric appliances throughout the home on the other. There will come a day and that day is soon when appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, televisions and other electrical and electronic appliances will be imbued with smarts so that each can talk, via a home area network, to the smart meter and then to the electric utility. But getting from here to there demands a great deal of engineering savvy. In this Smart Grid Roundtable, presented by Electronic Design, two of the leading companies in the Smart Grid space, Microchip and Freescale answer questions from a leading authority on the Smart Grid, Electronic Designs power editor, Don Tuite, about all facets of the Smart Grid and where the U.S. and most other countries around the globe are headed in the near future. If you are working on the Smart Grid now or are planning to do so in the future, you wont want to miss this roundtable presentation. Who Should Attend This Event? y Design engineers involved in designing the electronics that will interface with smart meters y Design engineers involved with creating home networks that will carry information from smart appliances to the smart meter y Engineering managers who want to understand some of the technical details and challenges behind the transition from todays electrical grid to tomorrows Smart Grid Register now for this live webinar Join Microchips Charlie Ice, Product Marketing Manager, as he participates in the online webinar "Energy and Efficiency in Motors and Drives" which looks at the changes that have occurred in recent years. Plants are much more concerned these days about energy consumption. For one, energy efficient equipment sends savings to the bottom line. In addition to the positive value of savings from efficiency, plants are also concerned about their carbon footprint. For most companies, the reduction in energy consumption has become an overriding goal. Efficient motors and drives contribute to the goal. Design News Senior Editor for Automation and Control Rob Spiegel hosts a webinar panel discussion featuring senior industry experts, including Charlie Ice. Register online at: https://event.on24.com Join Microchips Patrick Heath, Senior Manager, Strategic Marketing, as he presents "New Motor Controllers Lead the Way With Analog Circuit Integration". Implementing sensorless motor-control algorithms requires measuring the phase currents from a three-phase motor. Currently, this is accomplished using shunt resistors and operational amplifiers (op amps) in circuits that are external to the Digital Signal Controller (DSC) or microcontroller (MCU) that is running the sensorless motor-control algorithms. Analog circuits such as op amps and analog comparators are now often integrated onto the DSC or MCU. This presentation will survey op-amp integration, and investigate the resultant motor-control-system cost impact and tradeoffs, along with other integration choices, such as integrated power modules. Looking to Enhance Your Embedded Control Designs?

training that is relevant to each attendee while eliminating the frustration often associated with attending classes that present too much known information or assume a level of knowledge beyond what the attendee currently possesses. Product/tool classes provide knowledge on how Microchips products and development tools operate. This knowledge provides the foundation upon which all application instruction is based. Attendance at one of these classes can provide significant value through the reduction in time associated with instruction manuals and data sheet review or trial and error attempts to learn individually. Market forces constantly press companies to add functionality and features to their products often outside their areas of core competence. As a result, engineers must continually broaden their knowledge base. Microchips technology classes are intended to help engineers gain an understanding of a new field. Implementation classes combine elements of product and technology instruction to teach engineers how to design a real world application. Classes at this level provide how-to instruction rather than what or why instruction. Microchip is currently offering classes in the following curriculum: DSP Ethernet, , Human Interface, Motor Control, Power Management, Signal Chain, System Design and USB. Future curriculum is expected to include CAN/LIN, IrDA, Lighting and RF. With a worldwide network of Regional Training Centers and certified third-party trainers, Microchip makes it easy to enhance your technical skills, with locations in nearly every metropolitan area across the world! For those organizations who desire to have a number of employees attend a course at the same time, Microchip can customize any curriculum to meet your specific needs. Our instructors arrive at your location with all presentation materials and equipment, making it easy for your whole team to benefit from a specific course topic in one setting. In addition to the instruction, most Regional Training Center classes offer the opportunity to purchase a set of the development tools used in the class at a discounted price. If the class you are interested in is not scheduled in your area, you can sign up to receive an alert when a session is scheduled. For information on scheduling custom in-house training, contact your local RTC directly or visit the Microchip RTC web site: www.microchip.com/RTC

In tough economic times, companies often look for ways to trim expenses as a means to cope with a downturn in sales. One of the areas often targeted for cutbacks is employee training. There is not only the direct cost of the training to contend with, but also travel expenses and time an employee spends away from the job. During this challenging business climate, however, competitive pressures and technology changes dont stop and it is training that can help a company be better positioned to take advantage of the potential upswing. Microchip, with its global network of Regional Training Centers (RTCs) and third-party training partners, is here to help companies stay competitive with cost-effective, local training. To help companies deal with issues of travel expense and time, classes are given not only in Microchips facilities, but are also taken on the road. Customized customer premise sessions can be scheduled offering the most convenience. Time away can be managed more efficiently with the flexibility of half or full day class sessions. To be effective in teaching, instruction must take into account the needs and expertise level of the attendee. Microchips Regional Training Center classes are developed to provide a coordinated flow, enabling engineers to implement a solution to their product development needs. Instruction is developed and presented in product, technology and implementation classes that are grouped into application based curriculum. Each curriculum flow enables the individual to engage with the training at a level that meets his or her current knowledge and needs. The intent is to provide
