Unit Title: Exploration

Grade: 2 Unit #: 1 Unit Dates: August Week 2 September Week 2 Unit Overview: This unit focuses on Exploration of different settings: from space and the desert through non-fiction stories like Exploring Space and A Walk in the Desert and country settings with fictional stories like Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night and Iris and Walter. Students will be using these stories to learn about text features and the meanings of important vocabulary. For Phonics, students will be learning short and long vowel words including CVCe words. Students will also be asked to participate in classroom discussions in appropriate ways.

Week 2
L2.2 (d) I CAN spell weekly spelling words correctly using CVCE words. RF2.4 I CAN read at least 50 wpm. RI2.5 I CAN identify and use text features to locate information. RI2.4 I CAN define the meaning of weekly vocabulary words. W2.2 I CAN write informative text using facts and definitions.

Week 3
L2.2 I CAN spell weekly spelling words correctly using consonant blends. RF2.4 I CAN read at least 50 wpm. RL2.5 I CAN identify the beginning and end of a story. L2.1 I CAN write and identify a simple and compound sentence.

Week 4
L2.2 I CAN spell weekly spelling words correctly using inflected endings. RF2.4 I CAN read at least 50 wpm. SL2.2 I CAN identify key ideas and details from any text. RI2.1 I CAN identify who, what , where, when, why and how from a story. *I CAN write long and short sentences correctly.

Week 5
L2.2 I CAN spell weekly spelling words correctly using consonant diagraphs. RF2.4 I CAN read at least 50 wpm. RL2.10 I CAN read and comprehend different types of text SL2.1 I CAN participate respectfully in conversations with others.
