Description of course 1. Analysis and Design of Small Signal Analogue Electronic Circuits 16 lectures and 4 tutorials Aims To provide students with the circuit analysis techniques and skills which will enable them to design, analyse and understand basic analogue electronic circuits containing both passive and active components, and operating under small ac signal conditions. Objectives Understanding Characteristics of operational amplifiers. Effects of negative feedback on gain, input and output impedance, bandwidth and frequency response of an op-amp circuit. Models of analogue sub-systems in terms of terminal and transfer functions. Passive and active components. Appropriate technique(s) for analysing small signal ac analogue circuits. Steady state response of analogue circuits to small ac signals. Design of simple high, low and band pass filter circuits; transfer functions and Bode diagrams. Use of op-amps in simple small signal ac analogue circuit design. Principles of transistor amplifier design. Knowledge Characteristics of operational amplifiers and transistors, effects of feedback and examples of simple analogue circuits incorporating op-amps. Concept of phasors and their application in conjunction with circuit theorems to ac circuit analysis. Impedance matching. The response of analogue electronic circuits containing passive and/or active elements to ac signals. Skills Calculation of gain, input/output impedance, bandwidth/frequency response for an op-amp circuit with feedback. Design of simple transistor amplifiers. Use of impedances, phasors and complex number arithmetic to analyse ac analogue circuits containing passive and active components; proficiency in the use of RP and PR conversions to aid circuit calculations. Representation of simple ac circuits by their Thvenin and Norton equivalents. Course information

Syllabus Characteristics of operational amplifiers. Effect of negative feedback on gain, input and output impedance, and frequency response of an op-amp circuit; gain-bandwidth product; transfer functions and Bode diagrams. Simple circuits using operational amplifiers. Calculation of gain, input and output resistance and frequency response using the ideal operational amplifier model. Inverting, non-inverting and differential amplifiers. Conversion of an analogue circuit into a form suitable for phasor analysis. Use of phasors to analysis the magnitude and phases of currents and voltages in ac analogue circuits. Steady state frequency response of simple high, low and band pass-filter circuits. Analysis of small signal ac circuits, including circuits with independent and dependent ac sources. Impedance matching. Simple linear analogue circuits incorporating op-amps. compared. Difference and instrumentation amplifiers. Linear and non-linear circuits

2. Laboratory 3 sessions of 3 hours each Aims To reinforce material taught in lectures, and to illustrate measurement and analysis techniques. Objectives Skills Use of conventional instrumentation to observe and measure analogue circuit behaviour. Use of computer based simulation to investigate circuit responses to ac signals.
