Sluice Box Design by Lin

I have done extensive research on the sluice box that I will be presenting in a series of articles. In this issue I have written information that will give you items to think about in planning your sluice. By creating a paper or cardboard template before fabrication you will save yourself time and money. What I have found is that research can be limited and dated and not all inclusive. There is information available, but it is often sporadic, controversial, and incomplete. Many forums carry discussions on sluices, but they can be opinionated based on individual experiences, expertise, location, dollars available and type of gold. We all want to nd an economical way of prospecting for gold, and the inventiveness and creativity of prospectors abounds. Many have designed their sluices around salvaged or repurposed materials. In addition, they have the tools and expertise to do the job. If you do not have the experience or tools you may nd that building your own sluice is too much of a challenge. But, there are always those who love to tinker and are up for a good challenge!

Claim Holders Beware! HR 2764 Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008

Maintenance fee requirements for your claims have changed, and if you fail to take notice of the slight changes that have been made YOU COULD LOOSE YOUR CLAIM. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 changed the deadline for ling to 12:01 a.m. on September 1. This forces miners to get all information in by August 31st. August 31st, 2012 falls on a Friday. The Interior Board of Land Appeals ruled against a miner on August 17, 2011. He led his paperwork in person on September 1st. While you may nd outdated information on many websites referring to on or before September 1st the IBLA found that it was the miners responsibility to be upto-date on current rules and regulations. Pursuant to The Consolidate Appropriations Act, 2008,121 Stat. 2101, the annual assessment year begins at 12:01 a.m. on September 1 IBLA 2011-171. The holder of an unpatented mining claim, mill site, or tunnel site is required to pay a maintenance fee for each claim or site before September 1 of each year. The BLM Utah website correctly states: The assessment year beings at 12:01 a.m. September 1 and ends at 12:01 a.m. September 1, of the next year. Additionally: Members of the public are charged with constructive knowledge of their obligations under statutes and related implementing regulations, and BLM generally owes no duty to send personal notication to mining claimants with respect to the enactment of new laws and promulgation of new regulations, including increases in annual maintenance fees http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:H.R.2764: H:\IBLA Convert\Converted\181IBLA\WPD\L270-276.wpd

Thermite
DO NOT USE A GRINDER WHEEL WITH ALUMINUM There are some materials that can cause major problems if you try to grind them. In particular, the big no-no with grinders is aluminum. Aluminum melts easily, and if you were to try to grind down aluminum, it would start to melt and the aluminum would coat the wheel. Finely divided aluminum mixed with nely divided ferrous oxide (the black powder residue from grinding steel) produces a compound called thermite! Not a good mixture to have around with sparks ying. The stone would grind the aluminum for a while, but particles would start getting embedded in the pores of the stone. And the next time the stone comes around, there's no grit exposed, only little bits of aluminum. So the aluminum on the piece rubs against the aluminum on the wheel, producing more heat, which produces more melting, and so on. The natural response of the person at the wheel is to push the piece harder against the wheel. But this will only cause more friction and heat up the wheel faster. If the wheel heats up enough, it can explode. Mixing water with thermite or pouring water onto burning thermite can cause a steam explosion, spraying hot fragments in all directions. NEVER use this type of wheel to grind aluminum. This is another reason why I want to emphasize to all you D.I.Y.ers that you need to know what you are doing when working with aluminum and fabricating a sluice.

Bill Lovell, alias Chicken Bill

Miners used to eat a lot of venison stew and bully beef. It was what was available and kept well during the long cold winters. So the thought of sinking their teeth into a juicy bird was a treat and a welcome change in diet. Bill saw this as an opportunity to make a few bucks, so he ventured over to South Park and bought some aging hens and a few retired roosters. Ah, sounds appetizing! Yep, they were some pretty sorry looking birds that Bill gathered in South Park. But when youve been eating beef jerky, beef stew, and beef hash day after day, a simple fryer seems like a delicacy. Bill knew this, and he was sure of the birds value in the Cloud City. With the rst break in weather, he headed back to Leadville over Mosquito Pass with the birds strapped over his shoulders. He must have been a sight because at this point in the journey, the ock was still alive. The route was not an easy one. The snow was pretty deep on the north facing side, making the journey take longer than he anticipated. Before long a blizzard closed in on William Lovell at the top of the Mosquito Pass. Brrrrr! But Bill was determined to bring those birds to Leadville and make his prot. He survived the treacherous storm all night and the skies nally cleared at dawn. But with the hopeful sunrise another problem presented itself: his ock had frozen to death. All that work wasted. Or was it? A quick plucking and cleaning and he was on his way, skiing down the western slopes of Mosquito, into town to get top dollar for his ash frozen chickens. No one would be the wiser, he thought. His gamble paid off and he was paid handsomely for his frozen fowl. But like most secrets in Leadville, word had gotten out about his adventure. And that those fowl werent nearly as fresh as William Lovell made them out to be. It wasnt long before everyone was calling him Chicken Bill. Now, if youre wondering if this story has anything to do with Leadvilles commonly known Chicken Hill, it does. In fact the western slope of Carbonate Hill was Bills home; he was the rst resident of the area. So it only seems logical that Chicken Bill would live on what would become known as Chicken Hill. Park County Historical Society

Leadville, Colorado, had never seen the likes of William Lovell alias Chicken Bill. He was a miner and prospector and above all a great opportunist. Chicken Bill received his nickname when he attempted to herd a ock of chickens across Mosquito Pass. He gave his utmost attention to every sucker that stepped off the stagecoach or train. His only problem was his own bad luck. In its early years, Leadville was the site of famous mining swindles. When the Little Pittsburg mine exhausted its rich ore body, the managers sold their shares while concealing the actual condition of the mine from other stockholders. "Chicken Bill" Lovell dumped a wheelbarrow of rich silver ore into a barren pit on his Chrysolite mining claim in order to sell the claim to Horace Tabor for $900. Tabor had the last laugh when his miners dug a few feet farther and discovered a rich ore body. Many cite the wheelbarrow of ore but one article talks about holes and dynamite. This was in 1878, but according to the Flume, Chicken Bill was still working his charms in 1883.

December 20th 1883 Flume Citizens of Canon and Buena Vista have been paying a good price, during the last ten days, for a more intimate acquaintance with Bill Lovell, alias Chicken Bill. It seems that, being in a periodical hard-up condition, Bill turned his attention to the manufacture of brass nuggets, in which business he is skilled by long practice, having tried the game first fifteen years ago. By a process known to himself only he turned out a lot of nuggets of brass, containing a small percentage of gold and a large proportion of brass, that looked just as natural as life. These he disposed of to collectors at the places named, at prices ranging from eight to twenty dollars apiece. he is believed to have realized about $250 on this last venture. Bill is a slick one,, and in selling a nugget generally tells the buyer that he cant guarantee it to be all gold; the supposition being that it is part silver. The buyer generally remarks that he can see gold enough in it to satisfy him, and so hands over the amount asked for the virgin treasure. As long as the suckers and brass filings hold out Bill will never starve to death or go to prison. It was mentioned in the Flume in 1883 that Chicken Bill Lovell is superintending a mine in Big Evans Gulch for H.A.W. Tabor.

Worlds Largest Gold Coin

The Perth Mint is Australia's oldest operating mint. On June 20th, 1899, the Perth Mint was opened as a branch of the Royal Mint in London to rene gold and manufacture gold sovereigns and half sovereigns to be used as currency in the colony. At that time, Western Australia's population was growing rapidly (23,000 in 1869 and 180,000 in 1900) due largely to the discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie and Murchison areas of the colony. There was very little money available in Perth for which miners could exchange gold to pay for goods. Diggers, who ocked to the then colony of Western Australia in huge numbers from other parts of Australia and from around the world, deposited their raw gold at The Perth Mint where it was rened and minted into gold coins. The Mint remained under the jurisdiction of Britain until 1 July 1970, when it became a statutory authority of the Government of Western Australia. It is now owned by Gold Corporation, which is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia. Between 1899 and 1931, the Perth Mint struck more than 106 million gold sovereigns and nearly 735,000 halfsovereigns for use as currency in Australia and throughout the British Empire. The Mint stopped making gold sovereigns when Britain abandoned t h e g o l d s t a n d a r d i n 1 9 3 1 . Nevertheless, the renery remained busy as staff turned their skills to making ne gold bullion bars. Up to 2000, the Mint's rened gold output totaled 4,500 tonne, representing 3.25% of the total weight of gold produced by humankind. This is about the current holdings of gold bullion in the United States Mint's Fort Knox Bullion Depository. Up until the end of 1983, the Perth Mint also manufactured much of Australia's lower-denomination coin currency.
Information from the Perth Mint and Wikipedia

The world's largest gold coin was unveiled at the Perth Mint in Australia to mark the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Western Australia capital in October 2011. The giant coin weighs more than one tonne and is worth $53.5 million (35.1m). It bears the image of The Queen on one side and a leaping kangaroo on the other. With a denomination of $1 million, the coin was "the pinnacle of ingenuity and innovation", Perth Mint chief executive Ed Harbuz said. "To cast and handicraft a coin of this size and weight was an incredible challenge one which few other mints would even consider," he added. 18 people worked on producing the coin for 18 months. The massive coin weighs some 2,231 pounds and is 99.99 per cent pure gold. It is 31 inches wide and is more than 4.7 inches thick. The weight and purity of each issue from the mint is guaranteed by the West Australian government. The coin will now go on public exhibition. In addition to the unveiling of this giant coin several smaller coins were also released. For detailed pictures showing the manufacturing of this coin go to: http://www.today.az/news/interesting/97285.html

The previous record holder for the largest gold coin was the 100kilogram (220.5 pounds) $1,000,000 Maple Leaf coin made by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007, the size of an extra-large pizza. There were ve of such coins and one was auctioned for 3.27 million euros in June 2010 in Vienna, Austria.

To Build or Not to Build A Sluice

by Lin Smith

If you plan on purchasing a commercial sluice I recommend that you purchase it on site so that you can evaluate several models. Looking for the sluice that has the attest bottom will give you the most uniform concentration of materials

Sluice boxes are one of the most reliable methods of gravity concentration and are used to work many types of gold bearing placer deposits as well as other minerals. Sluice boxes have been used for 100s of years and because of their success rate they continue to be one of the most popular methods in gold recovery. Their basic design principles are used in all types of equipment from poop tubes, to rocker boxes, to Long Toms, highbankers and dredges. Regulations in Colorado prohibit the use of motorized equipment in many areas and may require a Plan of Operations if on your own claim. With a sluice, many areas will be accessible to you that otherwise might be limited by regulations. One can admire the ingenuity of early prospectors and the longevity of their inventions and contrivances. Modern day sluices incorporate the original designs of these early prospectors by enhancing their designs with modern materials and theories. The effectiveness of the equipment used by the miners in the 1800s was limited. The materials they used in the construction of their sluices were those readily available such as wood. Today, we are reprocessing the material that was produced by these sluices and this should tell you something about their effectiveness. Whether purchasing or making your own sluice box the sluice box has many advantages. Their low cost in comparison to other larger pieces of mining equipment make them an economical choice for the beginning prospector. They can be as portable as a gold pan, only needing a reliable source of water in order to operate. Because they are not motorized they can be used in many areas without a permit and are not bound by as many regulations as motorized equipment. Being nonpowered you will not have to deal with the added weight, potential of spills, and the noise motorized equipment presents. With modern advancements you can recover ne gold despite numerous articles to the contrary.
GPOC The Prospectors Quill Vol. 39 No.1

Disadvantages One of the largest disadvantages of a sluice is its ability to capture ne gold. Additional expanded metal, v-matting, miners moss or carpet can be added which will increase a sluices productivity but its cost as well. There can be down time when the sluice is being cleaned or examined for gold and efciency. Water is required to operate them Any movement or instability will disturb the gravel bed and concentration process Fluctations in volume and velocity of water will disturb the gravel bed and concentration process When sampling your tailing piles, sample all sections of the pile. Each shovel full of material will yield different results. Variables in slope, water velocity and volume, type of materials, feeds rates, etc., can all inuence recovery rates Advantages Portable Inexpensive to operate and relative inexpensive to build or buy Simple modications can be inexpensive Ease of operation once you understand operating principles Reliable Quiet Can be used in areas which require a permit for motorized equipment While modern developments in the construction of the sluice have made it more reliable, the basic principles which were used by miners in the 1800s continue to apply. There are numerous designs and materials available in sluice boxes and you will need to decide if you want to invest in a commercial sluice or you will be constructing your own. If purchasing a ready made sluice, a wise choice would be to stick with the major brand names if you are a beginner. Your best resource can be your fellow prospectors or club afliations. Ask them what they use and any pros or cons they might have, keeping in mind that there are numerous variables that inuenced each individuals success rate and opinions. Certain considerations must be factored in when determining the type of sluice you want to design. You should take into account the size and shape of the gold you will be prospecting (our gold in Colorado), the type of deposit, amount of water available and terrain. You also should research the regulations that apply to the area you will be using your sluice. There may be government limitations on size.

WE ARE ELECTRONIC at www.gpoc.com

There are a vast array of sluices available for purchase on the market. By researching commercial sluices you can gain information as to size, material and congurations that you can use in your own construction. Whether you buy or build your own sluice you will probably nd that you will be doing modications to your sluice depending upon the type of gold you will be sluicing and after using it in the eld. Because a manufactured sluice will cost from $75 to $150 you will need to evaluate the cost of materials, your experience in fabrication and the availability of materials ( and whether you have health insurance or not) as to whether purchasing a sluice would be more economical than building one. Your personal preferences, the type of gold you will be recovering, topography, size and feed rate of material and water supply will determine the type of sluice conguration you choose. Some considerations that should be taken when working Colorados ne gold are: light weight for easy of portability, minimal box slope with low velocity water, sidewalls which are high enough to contain the water ow, ease of cleaning with minimal loss of gold by being narrow enough to t inside a 5-gallon bucket, economics and your basic construction abilities. Doing your research, making detailed plans and a mock up of your design from cardboard will save you many headaches and wasted materials. The material a sluice box is made needs to be a major consideration. Because a sluice is used with water, rusting can be a major factor in metal sluices. Aluminum will be the least subject to rust, but you need to consider the different grades available and their cost. 063 (1/16 inch) 5052 aircraft grade aluminum will give strength to your sluice and is lightweight. Steel will be more cost effective but it is more prone to rusting and is heavier. Take into account the size of materials you will be using. Some materials come only in specic widths and lengths, and making your sluices size correspond with the size of materials will help prevent waste. The weight and durability of your sluice will also be a consideration. Fabrication of plastic is almost impossible for the do-it-yourselfer but might be a choice for you if you are purchasing a commercial sluice. Plastic scratches which might affect the concentration of material in your sluice. Keep in mind that while plastic may be lightweight will it hold up to the harsh Colorado UV rays and cold temperatures, and is it going to survive a major drop over an embankment? In Colorado you may nd running water in the winter with bright clear skies but it can be below freezing. Some plastics dont like the cold! Plastic can warp or twist making it difcult to have a level bed, crucial to processing your material. A wooden sluice can be economical to build but will be heavier, needs to be kept waterproof, can absorb water making it heavier, and in our high-altitude and dry climate may dry out and warp. A metal sluice can be both durable and lightweight. A lot of abrasive material will be washed thru your sluice and

you want to have a durable material that can withstand the abuse. Cleanup is one of the most time consuming factors in sluicing. You need a sluice that will be easy to cleanup with a minimal loss of any gold. Complicated fabrication, which contains too many screws or bolts to undo not only will frustrate you but they may get in the way of proper processing. Your rifes, catch mat, and any screening should be easily accessible, removable and cleanable. If you slightly angle the sides outward it will be easier to place and remove any rifes, matting or screening. You will nd some instructions that require you to glue down your mat. Glues break down under the harsh environment of water, abrasion and UV rays. Do you really want the hassle of removing old glue and destroying your costly matting? Colorados ne gold can work its way under the mat and you want to be able to remove the matting for a thorough washing of it and your sluice into a catch basin. When working with one group we had an individual pour water down the bed and not capture it in a catch basin. We watched our hard work pour into the Arkansas. Questions as to the width and depth of a sluice frequently arise. Some researches consider the width to be the most useful tool for controlling the velocity of water. A wider sluice should have a carefully designed feed box to ensure an even distribution of material across the entire width of the sluice, which can be more difcult to regulate. (by increasing the width you will decrease the depth and velocity of the water) A wide sluice requires more water for comparable water depth compared to a narrower sluice. Narrower sluices require less water velocity. A consideration when working with limited water availability. Colorados ne gold recovery requires a lower amount of water turbulence, velocity and depth. If your sluice is elevated a wider sluice will require a strong support structure. Increased width also will require closer attention to leveling your sluice. In order to ne-tune water velocity you can gradually adjust the slope of your sluice when in the eld. Being able to adjust the slope is an important design feature. The minimum height of the sides should at least be 3 inches. You need to allow enough room for the height of your rifes, any matting, the amount of material you will be processing (length and width of box) and the volume of water you will be in. By examining the wall heights of commercial sluice boxes you will usually nd a wall 3 to 4 inches high. You dont want the slurry in your box washing over the edge because of too short side walls. Long sluices are not necessary and may not mean any difference in your recovery rate, while the preclassication of your material before adding it to your sluice has a greater inuence. Water velocity will accelerate with distance, which will make it harder for the rifes, expanded metal, miners moss and other traps to capture small gold particles. The limited research that has been done on sluices shows that the majority of gold will be trapped in the rst third of a sluice.

A good rule of thumb is: a long narrow sluice will be more efcient than a short wide sluice. The length should be sufcient for all gravel and clay to be thoroughly broken up and disintegrated and for the gold to settle and be trapped. If the other components of your sluice have been given careful consideration for gold entrapment then the length of your sluice will not be as critical because most of the gold will have been captured in the rst third of your sluice. You might want to consider the location you will be sluicing in. You need sufcient room to adjust the slope of your sluice. If your sluice is too long this may not be possible in some locations. Length also depends on the different sections you build into your sluice. The Pop and Son sluice design is longer to accommodate the different sections. Thus, the more sections you have the longer the sluice box will need to be. You also need to consider the style of rifes you will be using and the space they will require. The longer your sluice the less portable it will be, you will have longer cleanup times, and your material costs will increase. You also need to consider the size of raw materials available because the fewer welds you need to make the better. Will the sluice t in your rig, and would it be more prone to warping? Most of all consider what you will be doing during cleanup. Lifting a sluice full of concentrates can be tricky due to the weight and environmental conditions. There are so many variables that come into play that it is difcult to estimate what works and what doesnt. If you research the different prospecting forums you will nd conicting opinions as to what works. You need to consider what will work best for you and your system, experimenting and testing as you go along. All the advice in the world based on another prospectors results, where you have no idea what the variables were, can only give you basic ideas-its up to you to adjust your sluice to the variables that are unique to your situation. Concentration, feed rates, amount of black sand and other materials, slurry ratios, gold size and composition, gold distribution, water velocity and volume, sluice angles, width and length, stability of your unit and several other factors create variables unique for each operator. Gold distribution will also vary from every shovel full you dig. You may nd that commercial sluices will prove to be the most cost-effective approach. Commercial sluices can often be cheaply and easily modied. When going to college and taking dietician classes I was always told that the recipes that were on products were tried and true. In order to sell their product manufacturers would provide recipes that were good and proven, which encouraged the purchasing of their products. The same should hold true with manufacturers of prospecting equipment. The tried and proven manufacturers want to sell their product and one of the best ways is by word of mouth. One would expect that they wouldnt sell something that wouldnt work. It wouldnt be worth the

time, $ and effort they put into testing, design and manufacturing their products. Obviously, manufactures need to promote more studies in the eld in order to test different materials for the small miner even if there are variables. As long as miners continue to purchase their product they dont have a lot of incentives to do this.

Overall, a commercially made sluice will give you a lot of bang for your buck. Unless you love to tinker, have the construction ability and equipment for making a sluice, you may nd that it is not worth your time and effort to make your own. Instead, I would recommend a commercially made sluice that you can inexpensively and easily modify to your specic needs after using and testing it in the eld.

The Sluice

by Lin Smith
Receiving End (entrance) ne gold recovery will signicantly improve if you pre-classify the material and the material is wet before being added. Before adding any material run water thru the sluice to remove any gold-grabbing bubbles. Flat bottom: If the bottom is convex or concave different channels will develop allowing the material to migrate into them enabling your gold to escape. You want the bottom to be as at as possible. Your ne gold recovery will increase with a uniform velocity and volume of water which uses all the surfaces you have created in your sluice. Flare aides in water control. The less the water volume and velocity the more critical preclassication of material becomes. Fine gold recovery will increase. Slick Plates allow more travel time for the gold and black sand to drop out allowing stratication of the heavies from the light material. The slick plate allows the material to become saturated with water and then slowly washes it down into the sluice box before it can pick up too much speed. Sluice boxes with this feature often have better ne gold recovery since there is less likelihood of large clumps of dirt or clay and air bubbles catching and stealing gold. Ideally it should be 16+ long for an 8 width sluice, to allow for proper stratiation and should inscrease in length with increasing width. Feeding needs to be at a uniform rate and even distribution across the sluice, dont just dump shovel fulls in. Classify-uniform-even Ribbed matting aides in capture and visibility of gold. Black background gives better visibility of gold and you can capture it with your succor bottle. Unlike Nomad (miners moss) or carpet, doesn't load up with anything but the heavies. It can make a good seal under the rifes. It's easy to clean, it's waterproof, the ne gold doesn't get lost in carpet bers and you don't have to run ribbed matting under it. Clean well before using to remove manufacturing solvents. Hinged Rife bars can make it easier to clean, but the added height of mattings may place too much pressure on this hinge. This is an area where you can get creative. Miners moss or carpet retains ne gold. You might add some ribbed rubber matting under the miners moss, as you would be suprised sometimes how much of your heavies slide down under the miners moss. Many try different products that are less expensive. You get what you pay for. Rife bars create a vortex. Rifes are the most common method of creating pockets on the bottom of the sluice. These pockets are zones of reduced energy where minerals may settle, and are designed to retain the gold once captured. They may be designed from a multitude of materials, layers and shapes, all varied due to individual preferences and perhaps even some superstition. With 90 rifes make sure the angle is aiming in the direction of the ow. Make sure they are tight underneath so that the water doesnt create a ow that looses your gold. You can shine a ashlight under them to make sure there is no space under them. The Pop and Son sluice doesnt have rifes and has been proven to be a good design for capturing ne gold. Expanded metal mesh aides in retention of gold. It acts as a classier and a sort of low prole set of rifes. It's often used over the top of moss to carry off the larger material and allowing the nes to drop down. Removable for ease of clean-up. The Clakerson Study recommends expanded metal. It does the same thing as larger rifes but catches smaller pieces and offers a much larger overall surface area in which to catch gold. It is also used to hold down the moss on the oor of the sluice. It tends to optimize scour across the entire sluice, gives many pockets for concentration, and prevents rocks from settling into the carpet which will cause eddy currents and scour that will strip gold out of its hiding spots. Needs to be two-dimensional and not at. Locking the rife bars in the box in such a way that it stops migration of ne gold along the bottom under the moss. Also fastens rife bars so there is no space under them. The problem with miners moss in stream sluices is that many stream sluices are not designed to have something that thick under the rife set. If you purchase a sluice this is one area where you can do modications, as the addition of matting and expanded metal will raise the height of your rifes making it difcult to clamp down and you will need to enlarge the holes. This added height may also affect the height of your rifes and their performance. If building your own sluice you may want to take into consideration the different types of matting, expanded metal etc. you will be using that will add height and plan your rife set to accommodate this extra height. Keep the wing nut or any fastener parallel with the water ow to prevent additional ripples in the water that "can" disturb your concentrating efforts. You should mount any fasteners on the outside of the sluice so they will not inhibit water ow and velocity and the concentration of gold. Discharge End Your tailing pile will build up here. You need to sample your tailings from different areas to see if you are loosing any gold. Every shovel full of material will have its gold distributed differently, and if you are loosing gold it could show up anywhere in the pile. This is why prospectors nd it lucrative to mine others tailing piles because they failed to sample it appropriately. You could also place a catch basin under the sluice to catch your tailings. If the metal you used is too thin causing your sluice to twist you can try running a strip of 3/4 metal along the length of the top of each side and attach it with pop rivets.
