CRASH OILS
RISD Wintersession 2005
This is an intensive crash course in the basics of oil painting, grounds, supports, mediums, techniques and processes. Students will paint in and out of the studio exploring still life, gure, self-portrait, imagination, and abstract oil painting, all the while learning through doing a lot of the things one needs to know to be self sufcient when using oils. Color, value, and composition will be taken in to account, as will the thoughts and themes the paintings are coming from. We will work with oils on canvas, panel, and paper, discovering the nuance and specicity of each ground. Students that take this class will be open to the wide range of possibilities offered by this time tested and contemporarily re-invigorated medium. We will discuss contemporary artists working in the medium and compare their motives to that of painters of the past. We will read some critical texts that have inuenced the history of painting in the last century. The course will offer a fast paced but solid grounding in both painting and drawing so as to familiarize the student to using oil in the studio as a mode of making.
