The Isle of Man The Isle of Man is a small self governing community of approximately 80000 people The Island

can be found in the middle of the Irish sea directly level with Liverpool. it is very rural but there are also many small towns and villages .There is not much crime compared to U.K areas .It was previously a place of leisure and tourism this business thrived during the war but with package holidays it has slowed. The steam packet and Ronaldsway allows tourists to travel over via ferries. The island is also a growing place business with low percentage taxes making it an entrepreneurs ideal . Air traffic control tower The tower is used to monitor the flow of air crafts in and out of the airport. It towers above the entire airport with a 360 degree window to create perfect visibility . Not at Ronaldsway but at larger U.K airports a tower will be open 24 hours a day. It monitors the traffic using technology such as : radar lights and radio signals to talk to pilots. It also monitors the weather and ground conditions .The tower obviously uses computerised technology but the information is backed up in paper documents so not lost if there is a failure to the system. If the airport is expecting an emergency landing the towers staff can alert emergency services with haste .The tower is essential for the safety of passengers and the function of the airport . How the technology meets the communities needs? Whilst allowing flights from and to the isle of man the control tower makes the public feel safe when travelling by reducing the risk of accidents .Flights give the public a choice encase steam packet is not functioning correctly .People from the isolated isle of man can visit friends and relatives via flights to the U.K with short flights taking less than an hour .This short travelling time assists business men and therefore allowing the Manx economy to thrive. The planes import and export goods this is useful in an emergency or time of need. It also provides and entrance and exit for tourists which again helps the economy. The airport also employs a lot of people not just air craft related jobs but also catering positions .The tower gives other essential information to the Manx community such as weather and wind speed . Evaluation The control tower allows the island to have a functional airport that provides many jobs for Manx people, but it is a shame that the runway is only large enough for small planes and jets .Although the airport is not ideally situated it is vital for the export and import of goods to the island. The airport allows connecting flights to the U.Ks airports but they can be expensive. Business men travel from and to the island via the planes and this helps the economy to thrive which raises the profile of the island. Cctv explanation of its usage CCTV stands for; close circuit television .CCTV is a camera system that allows the police and security services to monitor areas where crime might occur .On the isle of man a camera system can be found in strand street . As strand street is the main retail area where shop lifting is a common occurrence this means a camera is used to its maximum potential .Each camera is linked to a series of monitors which can be viewed for investigatory needs .It is used for prosecuting criminals and using the video footage as evidence in court .

How the technology meets the communities needs There is a need within the non criminal community to banish all crime from the island which is supposedly crime free .CCTV allows the manx people to feel safer, more secure within the community they live in .It can be used by the police to catch criminals after the crime has occurred this deters people from committing crimes in the first place which generally lowers crime levels .The cameras can monitor the streets in even unsociable times in the night there is a constant police surveillance which means footage can be viewed over and over again retrospectively to identify the culprits. Evaluation CCTV is remote controlled this allows the police to widen there viewing scope from the particular camera overlooking the crime by zooming. This creates a feeling of security within the Manx community by reducing and deterring crime. The cameras are used to monitor areas and identify criminals after the crime by viewing the footage after the crime .However cameras are not monitoring every where there are often blind spots where cameras are necessary but cant be placed due to various reasons. In places where lots of crime occurs the cameras could better resolution and therefore police can identify the perpetrators with ease due to the clarity. Although these high quality cameras would be a communal improvement the original cost and maintenance may be costly to the government. Some may refuse or reject the cameras as they may be invading said persons privacy by overlooking a window however the camera may reduce crime in there area which would make the resident feel more secure . Steam packet The online booking system allows island residents and tourists to travel outbound and inbound to and from the Isle of Man .The online resource allows quick and easy access to different areas in the U.K such as heysham Liverpool Dublin Belfast and Birkenhead there are facilities on the boats to carry many cars and foot passengers this choice is available on the website .If you register online you are able to view your travel history and alter it if necessary How the technology meets the communities needs The Isle of Man as a community needs an alternative to the air port of questionable reliability although travelling via a plane would be faster it does generally cost more the isle of man need a choice so one form of transport isnt overcrowded having a cheaper option allows poorer people to travel to the all over the British for low cost. A computer is a household item which most can obtain from a low price .due to the introduction of this technology people are able to book there ferry journeys over the internet. The steam packet have a website where it is quick and easy to book a journey also due to the convenience the system creates for the staff ther is a significant reduction to the price of your fare if you book online it has a attractive and simple layout making it easy no matter how computer literate said person is The site allows you to input the quantities of passengers you require to book and will give you a price for that booking having a booking system on the website allows a practical method for organizing your crossing .this is convenient at busy times such as tt week when tourism is at peak the boats tend to be full at this time and having the booking system means there are not constant phone calls coming into the office this makes the lives of the staff a lot easier in the long run

Evaluation To sum up the booking system it is convenient and practical to use but some may find it hard to use if not confident with using computers .Having an record of every passenger on a computer is quite risky as a fault could destroy all the records causing controversy and chaos within the community. However there are alternative methods of booking if this were to occur ,these methods could also be used for those who are not comfortable with the use of the system I.E phone or letter .having the system reduces the cost of the tickets for not just online bookers but for everyone due to the practicality of the system a smaller amount of staff are required to answer phones and write letters this means the company can use the money they save on staff wages to reduce the cost of the fares .the island need an alternative form of transport especially with the unpredictable price of oil making plane prices fluctuate the steam packet provides the choice and having a reliable form of transport is good for the economy although it is slower and weather also effects the crossings
