Achievements in the Areas of Plant Transgenomics, Tissue Culture, Polyamine and Mutation Breeding Research:
Developed novel strategries based on RNA interference for the control of insect pests and fungal pathogens in transgenic crops Co-Inventor of an entirely new method for the control of fungal plant infections through selective inhibition of fungal polyamine biosynthesis (Rajam MV, Weinstein LH & Galston AW. 1985, PNAS, 82: 6874-6878) Co-Inventor of a new method for effective control of viral infections of tomato by expressing artificial microRNAs (with Dr. Sunil K. Mukherjee, ICGEB) Demonstrated, for the first time, the enhancement of Vir genes induction and T-DNA transfer in Agrobacterium by polyamines 3

Developed different kinds of transgenic rice and eggplants for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance by introducing various genes associated with stress tolerance (seeking permission from DBT for contained open field trials) Developed marker-free transgenic tomato for abiotic stress tolerance using mtlD gene Developed transgenic tomatoes for delayed ripening by over-expression of polyamine biosynthesis genes during fruit development Demonstrated, for the first time, the involvement of polyamine biosynthesis gene (samdc) and mannitol synthesis gene (mtlD) in conferring biotic (fungal pathogens) stress tolerance in transgenic plants Developed a simple and efficient Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation for indica rice, eggplant and tomato with improved plant regeneration from the transformed tissues Developed, for the first time, an efficient genetic transformation for a single cell alga, Chlamydomonas by Agrobacterium tumefaciens Contributed significantly to the advancement of the role of polyamines in plant cellular processes, including stress tolerance in transgenic plants, restoration of plant regeneration in long-term callus cultures of indica rice, improvement of plant regeneration through somatic embryogenesis and organogenesis and disease resistance Developed efficient plant regeneration procedures for indica rice, eggplants, tomato and red pepper Developed several agronomically important mutants in red pepper through mutation breeding

Previous Genetics, Taught each year (Course is shared by three faculty and I teach Mutagenesis and Extranuclear Genetics) Cytogenetics and Genomics M.Sc. Previous Genetics, Taught each year (Course is shared by four faculty and I teach Genome Organization in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes as well as Organelles, Sex Determination in Plants) Cell Biology and Genetics M.Sc. previous Environmental Biology, This course was taught for about eight years along with couple of my colleagues I taught mutagenesis, plant tissue culture, genetic engineering and plant breeding)
