Guidelinesfor PersonalUseofStudentOwnedLaptopsinSchool PURPOSE:MiddletownSchoolswillprovidestudentsaccesstoawirelessnetworkandtheoptionof bringinginapersonallaptopasameanstoenhancetheireducation.Thepurposeofthese guidelinesistoassurethatstudentsrecognizethelimitationsthattheschoolimposesontheiruseof personallaptops.Inadditiontotheseguidelines,theuseofanycomputerinschool,including laptopcomputers,requiresstudentstoabidebytheDistrictPolicyandRegulationCode2316 AcceptableUseofComputerNetwork/ComputersandResources. Duringthecourseoftheschoolyear,additionalrulesregardingtheuseofpersonallaptopsmaybe added.Ifthisoccurs,anynewrulewillbecomeapartofthispolicy. GeneralUsage MiddletownSchoolsprovidetheopportunityforstudentsingrades4to12tobringapersonallaptopto schooltouseasaneducationaltool.Theuseoftheselaptopswillbeatteacherdiscretion. 1. Studentsmustobtainteacherpermissionbeforeusingapersonallaptopduringclassroom instruction.StudentsusinglaptopswillbeallowedaccesstotheInternetandnotetakingor wordprocessingattheteachersdiscretion. 2. Studentuseofapersonallaptopmustsupporttheinstructionalactivitiescurrentlyoccurringin eachclassroomandlab. 3. Studentsmustturnoffandputawayapersonallaptopwhenrequestedbyateacher. 4. Studentsmayusetheirpersonallaptopbeforeschoolandafterschoolinadultsupervisedareas only,suchastheMediaCenterorclassroomswhentheteacherispresent.Thelaptopshould beusedforeducationalpurposesduringthesetimesalso.Ifanadultasksastudenttoput his/herlaptopawaybecauseofplayinggamesorothernoninstructionalactivitiesduringthese times,thestudentmustcomply. ExpectedStudentBehaviorsandResponsibilities TheMiddletownSchoolDistrictacceptsnoresponsibilityforpersonalpropertybroughttotheschoolby students.Studentswhochoosetobringalaptoptoschoolassumetotalresponsibilityforthelaptop. Laptopsthatarestolenordamagedaretheresponsibilityofthestudentandtheirparentsorguardians. Studentsshouldtakeallreasonablemeasurestoprotectagainstthetheftordamageoftheirpersonal laptop.
