3 OBSERVING CHEMICAL PROCESSESS

MS. AIDA V. MENOR CHRISTIAN DANTE 20111148244

AIMS 1. To acquire skill in making careful observation. 2. To describe observation correctly and in a concise manner. 3. To be able to draw conclusions based on observation. MATERIALS 0.1M chromium(III) nitrate, Cr(NO3)3, 0.1M lead(II) nitrate, Pb(NO3)2, potassium iodide, Kl, 3 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH, 6M hydrochloric acid, HCl, water , iodide, l2, ammonium chloride, NH4Cl, calcium carbonate, CaCO3, calcium chloride, CaCl2, sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO3, mossy zinc, Zn, wooden splint, ice. APPARATUS Gas burner, Test tube, Test tube rack , Wire gauze, Iron ring, Iron stand, 100-mL, beaker, 10-mL graduated cylinder, Evaporating dish, Thermometer, Medicine dropper, Spatula

PROCEDURE PART I Reaction of chromium (III) Nitrate with sodium Hydroxide 1. Put 1 mL of 0.1M chromium (III) nitrate, Cr(NO3)3 in a test tube. 2. Add 1 to 2 drops of 3 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH. Write down your observation. 3. Now add more sodium hydroxide, drop by drop, until another change occurs. Record your observation. PART II Reaction of lead (II) Nitrate with Potassium Iodide 1. Put 2 mL of 0.1 M lead (II) nitrate, Pb(NO3)2, in a test tube. 2. Add 1 mL of 0.1 M potassium iodide, Kl . What do you observe? PART III Reaction with Acid to Liberate a Gas 1. Pour about 5 mL of 6 M hydrochloric acid, HCl, into each of three test tubes 2. Place a burning wooden splint at the mouth of the test tube immediately after adding half a spatula of calcium carbonate, CaCO3, to the first test tube. What do you observe inside the test tube? 3. Repeat #2 but place half spatula of sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO3 to the second test tube instead of CaCO3. What do you observe? 4. Add a piece of mossy zinc, Zn, to the to the third test tube. What do you observe? 5. Wait for the Zn to react for about a minute before inserting a burning wooden splint at the mouth of the test tube. Record your observation.

PART IV Effect of Heat on Iodine 1. Place a single crystal of iodine, I2, in a clean, dry 100-mL beaker. 2. Cover the beaker with an evaporating dish. Put some crushed ice on top of the evaporating dish.3 1. Heat the iodine, I2, with a small flame. Observe the underside of the evaporating dish. PART V Temperature Changes when Substance Dissolve in Water 1. Put 5 mL of de-ionized water in each of two test tubes and record the temperature in the table below. 2. Add a spatula of ammonium chloride, NH4Cl, to the first test tube and an equal amount of calcium chloride. CaCl2, to the second. 3. Shake each gently to dissolve the solids. Record the temperature of each solution. DATA Initial Temperature Final Temperature Temperature Change Water with NH4Cl 26o 25o 20o Water with CaCl2 26o 25o 25o
