Instruction to all Year 1 teachers: 1. Assess all children. 2. There are nonsense words in the chart.

Nonsense words are used to check that all children can sound-blend new words and syllables. 3. Children read from the top of the chart (from A).
4. If a child cannot read any further, refer to the placement chart

instructions diagram for the childs reading level. E.g. A child can only read 2 sounds and 3 words in level C. This shows that the childs reading level is at B.
5. Write down the childs name on the tracker with the date of assessment

beside it. Please identify any HSN or SENA children.

6. When all the children have been assessed, send a copy of the

assessment tracker to: agin@cfbt.org by Monday 20th February

After administering this test, look at the results your pupils have achieved. If there are particular sounds which the pupils are showing weakness in recognising and producing make sure that these sounds become the focus of your speedy sounds practice
