DES MOINES, Iowa In the closest outcome in the history of the Iowa caucuses, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney edged former Sen. Rick Santorum by just eight votes Tuesday to win the rst contest
of the 2012 election. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Romney had 30,015 votes while Santorum had 30,007, according to Matt Strawn, chair of the Iowa Republican party. In terms of percentages, both Santorum and Romney claimed 24.5 percent of the vote. The dead heat in the Iowa caucuses, in which a record 122,255 Iowa Republicans participated, raises questions about whether Romney can attract support from the partys conservative base. Santorum was widely viewed as the most virulently anti-LGBT member of Congress during his tenure in the Senate. He now heads to New Hampshire, which holds the nations rst primary next Tuesday, to see if he can extend his surge beyond Iowa, where

Maryland to take up marriage, trans bills

Lawmakers return next week; supporters plan Feb. lobbying events

Bills calling for legalizing same-sex marriage and banning discrimination against transgender persons are among the hot-button issues set to emerge next week when the Maryland State Legislature begins its 2012 session. Ofcials with an expanded coalition backing the marriage bill and a new transgender advocacy group leading the effort on behalf of the Gender Identity NonDiscrimination Act say they are hopeful that the legislature will pass both measures before it adjourns for the year in April. Its all hands on deck with both bills, said Carrie Evans, executive director of the statewide LGBT group Equality Maryland. Were talking to many lawmakers, including Republicans. Evans and others working on the two bills were cautious about predicting when leaders of the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates will bring the measures up for a vote, saying control over the timing of the bills was exclusively in the hands of the lawmakers. Supporters were also cautious about disclosing strategy for defeating an expected voter referendum that experts say will almost certainly be brought before the electorate in November in the midst of the U.S. presidential election if the Maryland Legislature passes a marriage bill this spring. Public opinion polls show voters in the state are evenly divided over whether to vote for or against same-sex marriage. Under rules of the Maryland Legislature, the committees with jurisdiction over the bills must hold a public hearing on the marriage and gender identity bills, even though the two bills were the subject of lengthy and contentious hearings less than a year ago during the legislatures 2011 session. The Democratic-controlled Senate approved the marriage bill last March in what supporters called an historic 25-21 vote. But the Democratic-controlled House of Delegates killed the measure for the year by voting to send it back to committee after supporters determined they were a few votes short of the 71 votes needed to pass it in the 141-member House. In what some called an ironic twist, the House of Delegates passed the transgender bill last year before the Senate killed it by voting to send it back to a Senate committee. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller (D-Prince Georges and Calvert Counties) reportedly orchestrated the decision to hold off on a Senate vote, saying a number of key supporters changed their minds and threatened to vote against the bill.
Maryland Gov. MARTIN OMALLEY announced plans last year to include a same-sex marriage bill as part of his administrations legislative package in 2012.
Shortly after the defeat of the marriage bill last year, supporters led by the Human Rights Campaign formed Marylanders for Marriage Equality, an expanded coalition of organizations with a track record of political clout with state lawmakers. Among the coalition partners are the NAACP of Baltimore, the Maryland ACLU, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Equality Maryland and HRC are also members of the coalition. Coalition spokesperson Kevin Nix of HRC has said each coalition partner brings unique skills and expertise to the lobbying effort on behalf of the marriage bill. But Nix didnt immediately respond to a question from the Blade on which, if any, lawmakers who were uncommitted or against the bill last year have indicated support this time around. The good news and the bad news is the legislators are the same, said Mark McLaurin, a gay man who serves as political director for the SEIU of Maryland. He noted that having the same players is helpful to a degree because they are already informed on the marriage and transgender bills. But McLaurin cautioned that with no election taking place since the 2011 legislative session, it may be hard to line up the additional supporters needed to pass the bills. Quite frankly, despite the great work thats been done since the last session, I havent heard very many announced conversions from no to yes, he said. So in many respects I feel were in the same place that we were. Like others lobbying for the marriage bill, McLaurin said he is hopeful that Gov. Martin OMalleys decision to include the marriage and transgender bills as part of his legislative package this year will provide an important boost for both measures. McLaurin, a former board member of Equality Maryland, criticized LGBT advocates and supportive lawmakers last year for their decision to withdraw the marriage bill from the House rather than bring it up for a vote. He said a vote would have helped in the lobbying efforts this year by identifying for certain where lawmakers stand on the marriage measure.
Other supporters disagree with that view, saying a vote last year would have forced wavering House members to take a position, possibly against the bill, making it more difcult for them to vote for it this year without being labeled as ip-oppers. Veteran transgender advocate Dana Beyer, executive director of Gender Rights Maryland, the newly formed statewide group, said a number of important developments since the transgender bill died in the legislature last year have given the bill great momentum this year. Among the developments are OMalleys strong endorsement of the bill and his pledge to make it one of his legislative priorities, said Beyer. She noted that OMalley responded, in part, to the urry of publicity surrounding the beating of transgender woman Chrissy Lee Polis at a McDonalds restaurant outside Baltimore in April. The beating, which was captured on video taken by a McDonalds employee, created a national sensation and boosted support in Maryland for transgender nondiscrimination legislation. In two other developments, the Howard County, Md., legislature passed a gender identity non-discrimination bill in December and the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that same month that a transgender woman red from her job in Georgia was protected from discrimination by the U.S. Constitutions equal protection clause barring genderrelated discrimination. All of these things are giving this bill tremendous momentum, Beyer said. I feel really good about where things stand. Opposition to the marriage bill, coordinated last year by the National Organization for Marriage, is being spearheaded this year by the Maryland Marriage Alliance, a state coalition with ties to NOM. Special interest groups are pressuring politicians in Annapolis to redene marriage in Maryland despite the strong opposition of a majority of Maryland citizens, the group says on its website. A large outcry throughout the state convinced our elected ofcials last year to reject this drastic action, but the threat is raising its head again, the web message says.
The group is calling on Marylanders to send contributions to support its effort to oppose the marriage equality bill and to protect marriage as a union of one man and one woman. It has announced plans for a rally against the bill in Annapolis early this year and is encouraging churches to call on their congregations to oppose the bill on a regular basis during Sunday sermons. Supporters of the marriage bill say the approval of a similar bill by the New York Legislature last year, under the strong leadership of New Yorks Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, would also help the effort in Maryland. Leaders of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, including HRC ofcials involved with the coalition, have declined to comment on possible changes in the wording of the Maryland bill. But speculation has surfaced that OMalley and supportive lawmakers in the legislature might follow Cuomos decision to add a new provision to expand the bills exemption for religious organizations. Cuomo reportedly persuaded some wavering lawmakers to support the New York marriage bill by agreeing to add a provision that allows religious organizations other than churches, including some businesses, to refuse to rent their facilities or provide services, such as catering or the sale of wedding gowns, for same-sex marriages. Gay rights groups that had been opposed to such exemptions went along with Cuomos backing of the exemptions. Equality Maryland, meanwhile, announced this week a series of events and activities it will sponsor to push for the marriage bill. Among them are nightly phone banks staffed by volunteers across the state; a Feb. 1 prayer breakfast and Clergy Lobby Day in Annapolis; and a Feb. 13 lobby day in Annapolis in which LGBT advocates from across the state will visit their representatives to urge support for the marriage bill. Equality Maryland will also work with Gender Rights Maryland to pass a bill that will add protections in existing anti-discrimination laws for transgender individuals, according to a statement issued this week by Equality Maryland.

On Jan. 2, in the 800 block of 21st Street, N.W., two complainants who are father and daughter had a verbal altercation. No criminal offense took place and a report was taken. On Dec. 28, in the 2500 block of Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., police responded to investigate a family disturbance. Both parties involved were on the scene and interviewed. Investigation revealed they are in a domestic relationship. Investigation revealed there was no assault. A report was taken and resource agency information was provided. On Dec. 28, at 3rd & Delaeld N.W., a complainant reported that while walking up to the intersection, a suspect yelled homophobic and racial slurs. The suspect then pushed the victim in the back. As the man turned to confront his assailant, two additional suspects approached and the man ed the area. As the victim ed, one suspect grabbed his hair and pulled some out. On Dec. 27, in the 300 block of M Street, N.W., a woman reported that while walking in the location she was approached by a suspect who robbed her of her purse. The suspect ed and remains at large. No bias indicated. A report was taken. On Dec. 27, at Kansas Avenue and Varnum Street, N.W., a man reported that a suspect attempted to rob him with a rearm. The victim ed the area and reported that he heard the suspect yelling homophobic slurs and other derogatory comments at him. Three suspects were later arrested and charged. On Dec. 27, at 14th & Irving streets, N.W., six complainants were approached by six subjects who used homophobic slurs. The suspects then began assaulting the complainants, displayed a handgun and attempted to rob them. Two suspects were arrested. On Dec. 25, in the 5200 block of Kansas Avnue, N.W., a man and a male suspect who are involved in a domestic relationship were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into an assault when the suspect struck the victim with his hands. The suspect was arrested. On Dec. 24, in the 1800 block of 29th Street, S.E., a complainant and a defendant were involved in a verbal altercation. The altercation escalated and the suspect assaulted the complainant causing injuries. The two are involved in a domestic relationship. The defendant was arrested. On Dec. 24, in the 1200 block of 1st Street, N.E., police received a call for an assault. While at a local establishment, a complainant was assaulted by a suspect. The victim sustained scratches on the face, neck and chest and the suspect was arrested. On Dec. 23, in the 2400 block of Hartford Street, S.E., a woman was walking when she was approached by a suspect who used homophobic slurs and assaulted her. The suspect ed the area. A report was taken. On Dec. 21, in the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, S.E., a woman reported that she was involved in a verbal altercation with another girl. The girls brother came from behind and punched her in the head. Medical treatment was refused. No bias was indicated. A report was taken on scene.

The Maryland Corporate Council, a new networking organization for LGBT business leaders and professionals, is scheduled to hold its inaugural reception on Jan. 19 at the Hotel Monaco in Baltimore. The event, to be held from 6 to 8 p.m., will include an introduction of the groups board of directors, an outline of its mission and upcoming events, and a keynote address by Mayo A. Shattuck III, CEO of Constellation Energy, a Baltimore-based Fortune 500 company. The event is open to the public; tickets are $25 and available at marylandcorporate.org. Among the Maryland Corporate Councils board members is Charles A. Berardesco, senior vice president and general counsel for Constellation Energy; Scott Marder, a partner at Duane Morris, LLP; Sophie Dagenais, senior fellow at the Annie E. Casey Foundation; and Kevin Naff, co-owner and editor of the Washington Blade. We felt it was long overdue to have a networking group of this type, said board member and president Ted Hart, CEO of the Columbia, Md.-based Hart Philanthropic Services Group. The Maryland Corporate Council is the new standard in LGBT business and corporate networking, according to a write-up on the organizations website. Established as a statewide non-prot organization, and dedicated to bringing together top-level LGBT corporate executives and thought leaders for networking, business advancement, educational and charitable events, the website says. A Taste of Miami Beach will be the theme of the grand reopening party for the D.C. gay bar Mova, which is scheduled for Jan. 13 at the bars new location at 2204 14th St., N.W. Owner Babak Movahedi said Mayor Vincent Gray and D.C. Council members Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) and David Catania (I-At-Large) are expected to be on hand for an a ribbon-cutting ceremony to ofcially open the establishment. According to Movahedi, Mova has been operating in the new location in an unofcial soft opening since early November, with the aim of ironing out any glitches and incomplete construction tasks. He said the Jan. 13 event will include the opening of the bars as-yet-to-be-used rooftop terrace. The reopening event will also feature hosts and entertainers, including a DJ, that regularly are featured at the Mova bar and lounge in South Miami Beach. Were bringing in a whole bunch of people from Miami who weve used as part of our team such as DJs and hosts and shot boys and circus acts, Movahedi said. He said the night will begin with a private VIP reception from 8 to 10 p.m. after which the bar will be open to the public at 10 p.m. At 1 a.m. a drawing will take place in which a winner will receive a trip to Miami Beach that includes an airline ticket and hotel room, Movahedi said.

Civil unions begin in Delaware, Hawaii

U.S. Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) attended separate civil union ceremonies in Wilmington on New Years Day for a gay male and lesbian couple who became the rst two same-sex couples to be joined under Delawares civil unions law. It was very nice to have a senator in attendance as well as lots of family and friends, said Mac Gardner, who was joined in the ceremony with his partner of 15 years, Michael Clement. Earlier in the day, Lisa Goodman, an attorney and president of Equality Delaware, and her partner, attorney Drew Fennell, became the rst couple to be joined under the law, which the Delaware Legislature passed and Democratic Gov. Jack Markel signed in April. The Hawaii civil unions law, which passed in the state legislature last February, also took effect on Jan. 1. This new law will provide a much needed legal framework to support and fortify the bonds between couples and families, said Gigi Lee, co-chair of Equality Hawaii Foundation, a statewide LGBT group. Although the Delaware civil unions law took effect Jan. 1, civil union ceremonies werent expected to begin until Jan. 3, when county ofces that issue both marriage and civil union licenses were scheduled to reopen following the New Years holiday. But Kenneth Boulden, Clerk of the Peace for New Castle County, which includes the City of Wilmington, took the unusual step of opening his ofce on New Years Day for couples that wished to obtain a civil union license and undergo a civil union ceremony on the day the law went into effect. According to Gardner, Boulden also issued a one-time waiver of the $50 license fee and a 24-hour hold on the issuance of a civil union license to enable same-sex couples to partake in civil unions on that day. The fee and the 24-hour hold also apply for marriage licenses. It was really nice of him to do that, said Gardner. He is a strong supporter of the civil unions. Boulden told the Blade that as of noon on Tuesday the rst day that the states three counties began to issue civil union licenses on a normal basis 16 such licenses had been issued by New Castle County, four had been issued from Kent County, and 12 had been issued by Sussex County, which includes the popular gay resort town of Rehoboth Beach. A total of about 50 civil union licenses were expected to be issued in all three counties by the end of the day on Tuesday,

Boulden said. There were no glitches in the system, he said. Everything went smoothly. Steve Elkins, executive director of CAMP Rehoboth, an LGBT community center and service organization in Rehoboth, said the towns rst civil union was to take place at the center on Wednesday. Unlike Boulden, the Clerk of the Peace in the conservative-oriented Sussex County, George Parish, spoke out against the civil unions law at the time it was pending before the legislature. Elkins said that after the legislature approved the measure, Parish promised to comply with its requirement that civil union licenses be issued to same-sex couples.
Parish couldnt be immediately reached for comment. My hope is it will be handled just like any other marriage license, Elkins said. The Hawaii law took effect nearly 20 years after a battle over same-sex marriage in the state triggered a urry of state constitutional amendments that ban same-sex marriage in more than 20 states, including Hawaii. The state bans on same-sex marriage followed a 1993 decision by the Hawaii Supreme Court that declared Hawaiis constitution prohibited the state from preventing same-sex couples from marrying. The state legislature responded by adopting a constitutional amendment,
later ratied by voters, that dened marriage in the state as a union only between one man and one woman. While calling the passage of a civil unions bill in Hawaii a momentous and unprecedented step forward, ofcials with Equality Hawaii said their ultimate goal is to bring about full marriage rights for same-sex couples. Marriage is still the ultimate expression of love and commitment in our society, said Alan Spector, a member of the groups advisory board. To argue this isnt the case for same-sex couples is to deny their very membership in society and their investment in its collective belief and aspirations.

Washington guv to support marriage rights

OLYMPIA, Wash. Gov. Christine Gregoire, a longtime LGBT rights supporter, announced Wednesday that she supports extending full marriage rights to same-sex couples in Washington state, according to Reuters. Several Democrats are expected to introduce a bill extending full marriage rights to same-sex couples in the next legislative session. Democrats hold a sizable majority in both houses in the state whose domestic partnerships have since 2009 offered almost all of the same state rights to same-sex couples as those offered to married oppositesex couples. In a historic rst, that domestic partnership law was upheld by the voters of Washington state in November 2009, when they approved Referendum 71. The speculation is that shell support marriage equality and we are looking forward with great anticipation to her speech, Josh Friedes, director of marriage equality for Equal Rights Washington, told Reuters. The change in law could be a boon for Washington if it follows New Yorks lead. According to the Wall Street Journal, since legalizing marriage in June, the New York City clerks ofce reported a 14 percent increase in new marriage licenses. Efforts to legalize full marriage for same-sex couples in 2012 are anticipated in Maine, Maryland and California as well.
Tenn. group wants exemption from bullying law

NASHVILLE The Family Action Council of Tennessee is seeking a religious exemption from an anti-bullying law in that state, an exemption LGBT advocates call a license to bully. According to the states most prominent newspaper, the Tennessean, the changes to the law would protect religious speech that some may consider offensive or insulting, which LGBT advocates charge is aimed at giving a pass to anti-gay rhetoric in the classroom. Teachers and administrators in Tennessee are already barred from discussing LGBT issues in the classroom. In addition, the proposed changes would remove the protected classes in the states anti-bullying law, and instead focus on specic behaviors, which opponents of the changes say is another blow to protecting students bullied for either real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. We need to be focusing on ways to ensure that Tennessee students receive an education free from bullying, harassment and intimidation, Tennessee Equality Project board president Jonathan Cole wrote on the groups website in regard to the proposed legislation. The health and welfare of Tennessee children may depend on it.

Gay Games leader resigns over reunication plan

SEATTLE The former Federation of Gay Games communications co-chair, has resigned his position on a crucial planning group for the 10th global LGBT sports event to take place in 2018, over a major impasse, according to the Bay Area Reporter in San Francisco. Kelly Stevens left the 1 Quadrennial Event Working Group which is planning an event that will bring back together for the rst time since 2006 the International Gay Games and the Outgames over the decision to bring athletes together to choose the 2018 city at the 2013 Outgames in Antwerp, rather than the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland. Stevens believes holding the vote in Antwerp rather than Cleveland will detract from the 2014 event. The schism between the Federation of Gay Games which hosts the Gay Games and the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association which hosts the Outgames stems from a disagreement between the FGG and the Montreal 2006 planning committee, leading to the 2006 games being revoked from Montreal and awarded to second choice, Chicago. The two organizations have been at odds for many years, but overtures of reconciliation have led to the possibility of hosting a combined event at the end of this decade.
Conservative Colo. group to push for civil unions

DENVER A self-described group of conservative Republicans has formed to help push Republican lawmakers to support an effort to pass same-sex civil unions in Colorado, according to the Denver Post. The mostly heterosexual leadership of Coloradans for Freedom which includes business leaders, political activists, lobbyists and former and current lawmakers plans to lobby lawmakers in support of a civil unions bill in 2012. A similar bill passed the Colorado Senate but died in the House in 2011. The point is not to create conict within the Republican Party, Republican Jefferson County attorney Mario Nicolais, who believes the ability to form a civil union is a matter of personal freedom, told the Post. Detroit LGBT activist and MCC pastor dies

DETROIT Former Detroit Metropolitan Community Church pastor Mark Bidwell who stepped down in September after a scandal involving a drug overdose death at his home died Tuesday, according to Michigans LGBT weekly, Between the Lines. He was 52. Bidwell was also forced to resign from his position as Ferndale police chaplain at the time of the death of Steven Michael Fitch. Bidwell took over the Ferndale-based church in 1989. Detroits MCC was founded in the 1970s and ourished in the gay-friendly Detroit suburb under Bidwell. The pastor was well known for performing same-sex union ceremonies on the steps of the Ferndale City Hall during Motor City Pride throughout the 2000s. Some oppose marriage litmus test as selsh
DES MOINES, Iowa For some gay Iowa Republicans, the 2012 presidential election is about more than just LGBT issues. Economic issues and a belief in limited government are trumping concerns that the GOP presidential contenders are hostile to LGBT rights. The Washington Blade interviewed ve young gay Des Moines residents who were among the estimated 120,000 Iowa Republican caucus-goers about why they support the GOP this year. C.J. Peterson, 21, a customer service representative for Nationwide Insurance, is backing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney because of the candidates business background. Peterson said he became interested in Romney as a high school senior in 2007 when he saw him speak during his last presidential run. I think, this year, hes been a 100 percent better candidate, Peterson said. If you compare the YouTube videos from 08 to now, he seems a lot less robotic and choppy and nervous. I think he seems a lot more relaxed, and almost presidential, ready to be a leader. Two other gay Iowa residents interviewed by the Blade said theyre backing Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) because of the candidates libertarian views. Dereck Plagmann, 21, said hes in the Paul camp because of the candidates adherence to the U.S. Constitution. I think its something that weve denitely drifted away from, Plagmann said. We need to get back to it basically. Other presidents, everybodys trying to make changes to it. Theyve lost focus on what really made this country, and what made us who we are. Zach Cofn, 22, a collector for Wells Fargo bank, also plans to back Paul. I think thats basically what this country needs right now is someone that will defend the core values and the core principles of the Constitution of the United States, Cofn said. Thats one thing that Ron Paul is focusing on well. Bryan Pulda, 21, a processor for Wells Fargo Bank, said Monday he still needed to research each of the GOP candidates. I come from a farming family, so its conservative or Catholic, Pulda said. Our personal views are more reected in the Republican candidates. Pulda said he was leaning toward backing Paul because he believes the candidates politics are consistent and he hasnt been in the news with anything controversial. Ryan Schrader, 22, who works at a local Caseys gas station, said hes leaning toward Paul. a potential candidate to back during the caucuses. I liked Rick Perry, but the latest ad he put out I think he used the wrong language, Pulda said. That wasnt the ad to go out. Peterson took a dig at Obama, saying hes been paying lip service to the LGBT community and that one of his major accomplishments repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell just kind of came to him. It was basically Senators [Susan Collins] and Joe Lieberman who said they were getting this done at the end of the year, Peterson said. What ended up happening is a great victory for us in the sense that LGBT Americans can now serve their country in uniform. Thats a great thing, but I dont really credit that to President Obama. The administration was seen by some as playing a passive role in the legislative effort to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell before the Pentagon issued its report on implementing repeal. But after the Pentagon report came out, observers said the White House was active in engaging with senators to push through the legislation. R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, said support for the Republican Party among young voters will grow if the GOP steers clear of social issues. Younger conservative voters under 30 continue to increasingly poll disinterest over social issues and do not support perceived or real demonization of LGBT Americans, Cooper said. If social issues, however, remain a myopic priority for certain candidates, they will nd as former [Republican National Committee] Chairman Haley Barbour stated in 2011, Purity is the enemy of victory. Peter Levine, director of Tufts Universitys Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, said involvement of young gays in the Iowa caucuses is reective of the political energy among youth throughout the country. I think its sort of characteristic of this generation, Levine said. Even though the turnout in the end may not be that high, for various reasons, I think there is a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Its not the rst time that Peterson and Plagmann have participated in the Iowa caucuses. Peterson backed Romney in 2008, while Plagmann participated in the Democratic caucus and backed Obamas candidacy. Plagmann said he might vote for Obama during the general election if the Republican nominee isnt to his liking, although hes changing his party afliation during the Iowa caucuses because hes disappointed in the administration. Back then it was my rst election, Plagmann said. I was 18. I didnt really look a whole lot into it. I guess I could relate to him more. But surely now, I dont think hes been as effective as what America had hoped.

I come from a very conservative background myself, Schrader said. My family is very conservative Baptists. So his views are more towards letting the people, which would be all of us, make the decisions to shape our country. The candidates chosen by the ve caucus-goers Romney and Paul have adopted some anti-gay positions, though they have not been as extreme in their views as other Republican contenders. Paul supported the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and twice voted against a U.S. constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Romney backs such an amendment, but expressed doubts that there is enough momentum or interest to pass it. Hes also said he would leave open service in the military as it is. Still, neither candidate has the track record or commitment that President Obama has demonstrated in advancing LGBT rights. But the gay Iowa caucusgoers say theyre backing a Republican candidate to address more mainstream issues affecting the country. Cofn said social issues can motivate people because theyre easy to understand, but if voters take the time to learn about economic issues, they usually wind up changing their mind and thinking about the big picture whats really going on here. I dont know if its because Ive always lived in Iowa, and Iowa is one of the states where you can be married, Cofn said. With the amount of rights that gay people have right now, I feel totally comfortable with what we have. While Iowa has achieved marriage
equality, if a Republican administration succeeds in passing a Federal Marriage Amendment as many of the candidates have promised, the measure would abrogate the 2009 court ruling allowing gay couples to marry in the state. Pulda similarly said issues like samesex marriage are on the back burner in comparison to improving economic conditions in the country. I would nd it almost selsh for me to go out and say, I vote for this person simply because they want same-sex marriage, Pulda said. There are so many more problems in this country affecting more people than just me. But theres a limit to how much these caucus-goers are willing to look the other way. Candidates like former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Gov. Rick Perry or Rep. Michele Bachmann, who make anti-gay rhetoric a foundation of their campaigns, are turn-offs as potential candidates. Peterson said he wouldnt support a candidate who would make social issues a central tenet of their campaign. Im a Republican, but Im not stupid, Peterson said. If they want to use those issues as a wedge to get voters to support them, Im not really attracted to that. A recent anti-gay ad by Rick Perry that has been widely circulated on the Internet was a bridge too far for these caucusgoers. In the ad, Perry accuses Obama of engaging in a war on religion and says, Theres something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military, but our kids cant openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. Pulda said the ad made him think twice about Perry, but still isnt ruling him out as

Gay Iowans tired of GOP attacks on marriage

Scoring political points on the backs of loving couples
DES MOINES, Iowa The 2012 presidential election campaign has been personal for John Sellers and Tom Helton. Several candidates in the race for the Republican nomination have pledged to end their same-sex marriage and the marriages of gay and lesbian couples in Iowa and throughout the country via constitutional amendment. In an interview with the Washington Blade, Sellers, 51, a remote engineer for Clear Channel Radio, and Helton, 53, a clerical worker for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, expressed their unease with how the GOP contenders have addressed marriage. I know that not all Republicans feel that way, Sellers said. To a lot of people, it isnt a huge issue. If you look at the latest poll results, the ones who are supportive of civil unions and marriages together, its the majority of the Republican Party. Sellers added he thinks these Republicans are catering to what he said is a minority of Republicans who dont believe in any kind of relationship recognition for gay couples. Helton shared a similar sentiment that Republicans he knows are not as concerned about marriage as other issues despite the GOP candidates attacking same-sex marriage as they have toured Iowa. I know a lot of Republican people that I work with and just acquaintances that really I dont want to say dont care but its not the main issue, Helton said. And a lot of the candidates like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, theyre focusing so much on that. Santorum nished just eight votes behind winner Mitt Romney in Tuesdays caucuses. The couple has been together 13 years and married in Des Moines on May 1, 2009, following a three-day waiting period after it was rst possible for same-sex couples to obtain a marriage license in the state. Marriage equality was instituted in Iowa in 2009 when the Iowa Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state constitution guaranteed marriage rights for gay couples. Nonetheless, no shortage of campaign rhetoric against same-sex marriage spewed from Republican candidates as they made the rounds in Iowa. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich who reportedly directed $150,000 to a referendum effort in 2010 that successfully ousted three Iowa justices who ruled in favor of marriage equality called marriage equality a temporary aberration that will dissipate at aIowa campaign event in September. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has been particularly critical of the Iowa justices who determined that same-sex couples have a right to marry in the state. Shes repeatedly called them blackrobed masters for legalizing marriage equality in the Hawkeye State. Enjoying a boost in the polls in Iowa in the days for before the caucuses, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said Saturday during an interview with NBC News Chuck Todd that his version of the Federal Marriage Amendment would not only prohibit additional same-sex marriages, but existing marriages would be invalid. Santorums vision contrasts with that of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whos said that under his leadership individuals in existing same-sex marriages would remain married if a Federal Marriage Amendment passed, although future such marriages would be prohibited. Candidates have also signed pledges committing themselves to work against same-sex marriage if theyre elected to the White House. The FAMiLY LEADER, an anti-gay group in Iowa, has been soliciting candidates to sign a pledge to back a U.S. constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court. Three contenders Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Santorum have each signed the pledge. Gingrich sent a letter to the organization saying he supports the principles of the organization, but he didnt sign the pledge. Those candidates as well as Romney have also signed a pledge from the National Organization for Marriage committing them to oppose marriage equality nationwide if elected president.

DES MOINES, Iowa The chair of the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday said a pledge by GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum to invalidate same-sex marriages via federal marriage amendment was un-American. DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. House member from Florida, made the comments to the Washington Blade during an interview at the Des Moines Convention Center on the day of the Iowa Republican presidential candidate caucus. That would be un-American, undemocratic and entirely inappropriate and unacceptable, Wasserman Schultz said. Over the weekend, Santorum was asked by NBC News Chuck Todd about what should happen with existing samesex marriages if a U.S. constitutional amendment passed banning marriage equality. Santorum, who backs such an amendment, said in his view such marriages would be invalid. Wasserman Schultz deferred to the platform committee when asked whether the Democratic Party would endorse same-sex marriage as part of its platform. She noted that she personally supports same-sex marriage. Our platform is developed by our members and by grassroots activists, so theyll have an opportunity to weigh in on what should be a part of it, she said. I represent as a member of Congress one of the largest, most vibrant, gay communities in the entire country. Im a supporter of same-sex marriage and believe that we need to make sure that we stand up for equality for everyone. The platform document will be written and made public at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., in September. A transcript of the exchange follows: Washington Blade: Getting back onto Rick Santorum, hes supporting a Federal Marriage Amendment that would invalidate all same-sex marriages throughout the country, including those here in Iowa. What is your reaction to that? Debbie Wasserman Schultz: That would be un-American, undemocratic and entirely inappropriate and unacceptable. Blade: If you had a message for gay Americans watching the Iowa caucus results, what would you tell them? Wasserman Schultz: Well, Iowa has been a forerunner when it comes to the civil rights of Americans. So many of the civil rights advances, including same-sex marriage have begun in Iowa.

Rather, this tie between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney shows the deep divisions that exist between social conservatives who want to harm loving and committed couples, and scal conservatives who prioritize job creation and a smaller government. Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of GOProud, a gay conservative group, congratulated Romney and Paul in a statement for placing in the top three slots but notably left out any mention of Santorum. Tonight, we congratulate Governor Romney and Congressman Paul on their strong showings in the Iowa caucuses, LaSalvia said. It is clear that the message of economic renewal and limited government is resonating with Republican voters. LaSalvia commended Romney and Paul for offering plans that he said contrasted with the big government approach of President Obama without resorting to anti-gay rhetoric. While there are certainly big differences between Governor Romney and Congressman Paul, especially when it comes to foreign policy, both chose to emphasize issues like the economy and the size of government over demonizing gay people, LaSalvia said. We are pleased to see that so many Republicans in Iowa are focused on the issues that unite us as conservatives, instead of the side show issues. Brian Brown, president of the antigay National Organization for Marriage, praised both Santorum and Romney over their photo-nish because of the candidates opposition to same-sex marriage. Its especially satisfying to see Senator Santorum, a longtime friend and champion for the family, come from behind to mount such a successful campaign, Brown added. Santorum and Romney were among the candidates that signed NOMs pledge to oppose same-sex marriage by backing a Federal Marriage Amendment and defending the Defense of Marriage Act in

court if elected president. The strong showing by both Santorum and Romney shows that supporting marriage is not only the right thing to do, it is the politically smart thing to do, Brown said. But Brown criticized Paul, who twice voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment and isnt among the candidates who signed NOMs pledge. This is a lesson that Ron Paul may be learning the hard way, Brown said. Paul suffered a big loss by nishing third in Iowa, a state he was expecting to win. Brown said ads NOM aired against the candidate in Iowa in addition to grassroots work were a factor in Ron Pauls poor showing. The results triggered the end of Rep. Michele Bachmanns campaign. She won just 5 percent of the vote even though Iowa is her home state. Bachmann announced Wednesday that she would leave the race. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also enjoyed the status of GOP presidential frontrunners, had less than optimal nishes. Gingrich took fourth in the caucuses with 13.2 percent of the vote and Perry came in fth with 10.3 percent. In a speech after the contest, Perry said he was going to scrap plans to campaign
in South Carolina and return to Texas to determine whether a path to victory remains. The strong showing for Santorum comes on the heels of comments he made that raised the eyebrows of LGBT advocates in an interview Tuesday with ABC News Jake Tapper. The candidate said he opposes the 2003 U.S. Supreme Court ruling of Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down state sodomy laws throughout the country. He also said he opposes a court decision preventing states from prohibiting the sale of contraceptives. Santorum said he personally would have voted against the state law in Texas prohibiting consensual sex between two males, but still thinks states should be able to pass such laws. I wouldnt have voted for the Texas sodomy law, but that doesnt mean the state doesnt have the right to do that, Santorum said. I just didnt think they should do it. We shouldnt create constitutional rights when states do dumb things. We should let the people decide. If the states are doing dumb things, get rid of the legislature and replace them as opposed to creating constitutional laws that have consequences beyond the specic case that was before them.
As Republicans in Iowa were deciding on the best candidate to represent them, Democrats also held caucuses throughout the state, even though President Obama was the only candidate on the ticket. More than 25,000 Iowa Democrats were estimated to have participated. Obama delivered a message to supporters attending the caucuses via video and took a couple questions from attendees pledging their support to him. Among the accomplishments that he touted during the video was repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Because of you, weve been able to end the policy of Dont Ask, Dont Tell so that every American who want this country that they love can have that opportunity, regardless of who they love, Obama said. In a statement, Sue Dvorksy, chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, said the Democratic Iowa caucus was a great opportunity to test our campaign organization and expand our volunteer base as we move toward November. In a strong show of support, more than 7,500 Iowans tonight pledged to volunteer for the campaign over the course of the next year, underscoring their commitment to continuing the change the country has seen under President Obamas leadership, Dvorsky said.

Why do we care so much about Iowa?

Drawn out caucus process more about hype than politics

The Iowa caucuses are over and the question has to be: Who cares? And what does it all mean? The caucuses tend to not matter all that much, except to selfrighteous Iowans. It was a big deal in 2008 when Barack Obama won and Hillary Clinton came in third but then she bounced back in New Hampshire and they slugged it out for the next seven months. Bill Clinton came in fourth in Iowa the year he won the nomination. What the caucuses do is bring millions of dollars into the state, which becomes the focus of the national media for months. This year there is no Democratic contest so it is only Republican voters who are really paying attention. Those voters range from conservative to ultra-conservative. Evangelicals there tend to be virulently anti-LGBT, pro-life, states rights advocates and generally believe we would be better off if we went back to the 1950s where their own LGBT relatives were forced to stay in the closet and abortions were performed with coat hangers in backrooms. They are often hypocrites ponticating about the sanctity of marriage and then explaining how they could vote for a sleaze like Newt Gingrich. Remember Mike Huckabee? Most dont but he won the Iowa Republican caucus in 2008. This years games began when Rep. Michelle Bachmann won the Ames straw poll in which you bus people in from around the state and pay them to vote. She was big news in all the national media outlets, which screamed, Bachmann is the frontrunner. That didnt last very long. Next came Rick Perry, the Texas governor who many said was the candidate for those who thought George Bush was too cerebral. Well Iowans thought he was the cats meow until his debate performances doomed his candidacy. Next they fell in love with Herman Cain. I think it made them feel good to support

someone who was the only face of diversity in their midst even though he hardly ever campaigned there since he was too busy selling his book. But something about his yelling 999 everywhere made their hearts utter. Their love affair with him kept going until they found out he may have had too many of his own. First it was those pesky women he harassed and then the one with late night phone calls and cash payments his wife didnt know about for 13 years. After Cain was cast aside there was that quickie love affair with Newt Gingrich, sort of like his marriages, which amed out as soon as Romney and Paul began their vicious negative commercials about him. Those negative commercials simply told the truth. As the day of reckoning approached there were three candidates left standing who fought for the hearts of Iowas Republican voters. First was the ever-steady Mitt Romney who had rst come courting in 2008. He appeared to claim the hearts of the same 25 percent of caucus goers who loved him then. His positions, if you could gure out what they are on any particular day, still seemed too moderate for most Iowans. But some were beginning to say they might overlook his positions because they thought he was the candidate most likely to beat Obama and after all that was the overriding goal. Then there was Ron Paul, the 76-yearold libertarian running to be president of a government he generally believes shouldnt exist. And nally the newest heartthrob, or avor of the week for evangelical Iowans, Rick Santorum. He seemed to be winning the hearts of farright Iowans as he had won other far-right hearts when he served as a senator from Pennsylvania. Even Tea Party members in Iowa seemed willing to forgive his votes for millions of dollars in earmarks, his support of Romney in 2008 and his worst offense: that he once said abortion may be OK in the case of rape or incest. Caucus day dawned clear and bright. Nearly 40 percent of Iowa Republicans still claimed they hadnt made a nal decision after all the meet and greets, millions of phone calls and campaign ads, and reading all the campaign literature. The national media were in Iowa spending millions of dollars on food, hotels and travel, to be the rst to tell us who the winner was. It is hard to accept that someone other than the candidates themselves and maybe their husbands, wives or other relatives were waiting for this news with baited breath. Most Americans like me were just waiting for this spectacle to be over. Then early Wednesday morning came the announcement. The top three vote getters were Romney, Santorum and Paul, with Romney winning by just eight votes. Again, I say, who cares? Now on to New Hampshire.

Mind your manners for a more civil society

Two gay authors remind us that courtesy counts in new books
any law. As tempting as it is to ridicule etiquette as being outmoded and frou-frou (who cares if we wear white before Memorial Day?), manners matter. Perhaps, never more so, than in the midst of the great recession and an election year. Two new books by two gay authors Social Qs: How to Survive the Quirks, Quandaries and Quagmires of Today by Philip Galanes, who writes the advice column Social Qs in the Sunday New York Times, and Would It Kill You to Stop Doing That: A Modern Guide to Manners by Henry Alford, a writer and humorist illuminate why courtesy and civility, far from being old-fashioned relics, are the fabric that keeps life running smoothly and with kindness. Without this essential ingredient, wed be like Neanderthals (with iPhones and Blackberries). (Steven Petrows Complete Gay & Lesbian Manners: The Denitive Guide to LGBT Life, released in June covers everything from coming out to why your straight friend shouldnt say dyke.) Its possible to be self-righteous about civility. Alford writes about how he conducted an experiment in retaliatory manners in which he said he was sorry to people such as discourteous pizza parlor servers. (Their offense: they hadnt apologized to Alford for their rudeness.) But reverse apologizing is usually as rude if not ruder than the incident that inspires it, Alford concluded at the end of the day. Manners can be carried to a ridiculous extreme. Years ago, a co-worker videotaped me as I apologized to a desk after Id bumped into it. Yet few things are as important as how to politely (and kindly) decline a co-workers Facebook friend request; break-up with a lover; fend off rude queries about ones income, health or sexual orientation; or escape from Aunt Matilda whos a Michele Bachmann fan. No one cares about what fork we eat with what food, my friend Sybille told me the other day, but we care about manners of the heart about doing even unpleasant things with kindness. Many questions and problems in our lives and in our society are hard (sometimes not solvable), from trying to eradicate poverty to understanding the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Galanes wrote in his Times column on Nov. 4. Still others are so complicated that we avert our eyes rather than take stock of them, he said, ... some questions simply defy explanations. When I was barely a man, just after college, my father took a shotgun from a locked closet in our basement and killed himself ... How could he do such a thing? Over time, Galanes said he found himself drawn to complicated questions with denitive answers ... I would grapple with online daters, and 15-minutes-of-fame bridezillas all in lieu of the questions that are simply too hard for us to answer. We shouldnt give up on seeking marriage equality, ghting homophobia, coming to terms with our personal issues (whether it be the suicide of a family member, the loss of a spouse or other trauma) or any of the complicated questions. But manners are important to this effort. With the presidential campaign swinging into full gear and different viewpoints struggling to co-exist in our country and in our LGBT community, civility is needed more than ever. Lets be mannerly and respectful to one another.

Black LGBT community doesnt support its own

Readers mourn closure of niche media outlets

Late last year, Gay Black Men News (GBMNews.com) folded. It was an online eZine that offered something different because it brought a perspective of the news as it related specically to gay men of African descent. We are blessed with a large following of avant garde, artistic people. While most of our site visitors are in the USA, we have a good following around the globe. This we believe is largely due to our global prospective and the fact that the global people of color community are a priority with us, said Ralph Emerson, publisher and founder of GBMNews. Emerson operated the publication out of his own pocket. And while clearly the cost of operation was prohibitive causing the eZine to cease publication, another reason, according to Emerson, is the lack of support from the LGBTQ communities of African descent. Our folk dont rally around and support their own. When GBMNews started everyone rushed to it, but with the advent of Facebook the attention had shifted, Emerson told Out in Jersey reporter Antoine Craigwell. We didnt have a groundswell of support for the site and for the newspapers as I thought it should have had from the community. As a community, we dont seem to work together and support each other as a collective, and as a result, it collapses, Emerson said. Emersons statement that LGBTQ people of African descent dont support their own shouldnt be dismissed as anger and bitterness for having to close shop. Rather, his statement speaks volumes about our black LGBTQ communitys history of not nancially supporting projects that benet us. Issues of race, gender expression and sexual orientation invite a particular type of news reporting. One of the biggest losses, with now no nationally recognized black LGBTQ print or online eZine, will be the unreported and underreported news of our lives. GBMNews did local, national and international coverage of us. A lack of nancial support from the black LGBTQ community has contributed substantially to all the print and online black LGBTQ publications folding. Ive had the pleasure of writing for these magazines but sadly my tenure with these zines was short-lived. In 2007, GBMNews was founded as an all-volunteer contribution site devoted to the LGBTQ community of color by Ralph Emerson. In 2009, Emerson launched GBMMagazines and in 2010, he launched RadioGBM, a groundbreaking Internet radio station with exceptional coverage of the music industry and emerging artists. I joined GBMNews in December 2009 when Emerson wrote, I noticed your article submissions and Im contacting in hopes that you will become a regular GBMNews contributor. I am certain our site visitors would enjoy your journalistic dispatches, your opinions, analysis, and distinctive observations. But on Nov. 28 GBMNews, GBMMagazines and RadioGBM shut their doors for good. Im going to take a few months off to think about my next direction. Ive toyed for years with starting an arts business, Emerson said. In 2000, Arise was founded by Glenn Alexander and the Rev. MacArthur H. Flournoy, associate director of the Religion and Faith Program at the Human Rights Campaign. The publications readership was the same-gender-loving community of people of African descent. Its mission was to challenge the mind, encourage the spirit, and afrm the value of all sexually diverse people of African descent. In November 2003, the paper celebrated its third anniversary and had become a national icon for the African-American LGBTQ community. Sadly, a month later, Arise folded. In the 1990s, Venus Magazine was founded by Charlene Cothran, a publication that for 13 years targeted the black LGBTQ community. As a staple in the African-American community, Venus Magazine was the rst and only queer magazine owned and operated by a black lesbian that spoke to and about the unique intersections of being black and LGBTQ in both the African-American and white queer communities. Cothran sent shock waves throughout African-American LGBT communities when she wrote an article entitled, REDEEMED! 10 ways to get out of The Life if you want out! In it, she wrote that shes now not only saved, having turned her life over to Jesus, but straight as well. And as a edgling magazine with the threat of folding always hanging over its head, Cothran opted to take nancial support in 2007 from black churches funded by white right-wing Christian organizations that emphasize reparative therapies. In fact, she opted to be her own magazines ex-gay poster girl, rather than let the magazine fold. Those of us who read GBMNews will feel its absence, and remember why its not here with us.

D.C. pays tribute to singer Peter Fox who died Monday

Many in Washingtons gay community are reeling from the death of Peter Fox, a wellliked local singer who died Monday after a short battle with central nervous system lymphoma. A funeral is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. at Foundry United Methodist Church for the 45-year-old musician. The Pompton Plains, N.J., native studied business and music at Pennsylvania State University and had been in Washington more than a decade where hed worked several jobs. He loved driving trucks and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He worked full time as director of credentialing at the American Academy of HIV Medicine and in recent years had pursued a singing career that found him releasing an eponymous album, giving local performances at the Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre and more, and making charitable appearances for local gay causes. He was also a longtime member of the Gay Mens Chorus of Washington and sang in its Potomac Fever ensemble. Though his parents both preceded him in death, Fox is survived by three brothers and a sister. He had a good relationship with his family and attested to it in a Blade Pride-related coming out story he participated in last June. Wow, whats that like, exclaimed my mom when I came out to her (and the rest of my family) in my early 20s, Fox wrote. Just the nature of her question to me describes their love for me and their trust that I am exactly who I am meant to be. I just dont think my clan was genetically

In 1957 this guy gets red from the United States government for being a homosexual. He ghts back. In 1961, his is the rst civil rights case on sexual orientation argued in front of the Supreme Court. Kameny formed one of the rst groups to ght for gay rights and launched some of the earliest public protesting of the gay movement. I wish I had known I had a lot of time to make mistakes and I had taken more chances. WHY WASHINGTON? I moved here to be with my ex and I love it. It is a beautiful city. Nick Lopata has several DJs he likes to hear spin when hes in different cities. Hes bringing them together next weekend for a new party in Washington. Luther (its on MLK weekend) is set for Jan. 15 at the U Street Music Hall (1115 U St.) from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $12 at the door until 9 ($15 thereafter). Lopata, a Blowoff VJ, says he wanted something different with this event. I envision sort of like a business guy with a little bit of a dark club side, he says. The music will be very progressive house/club-type music and each DJ has his own style. Overall I would say its sort of sexy and groovy and will just make you want to dance and enjoy yourself. Though not an ofcial Mid-Atlantic Leather event (its the same night as MALs Reaction Dance at the 9:30 club), its early enough that people can attend both. They let us put our advertising in their packets and theyve been nothing but helpful, he says of MAL organizers. Were not connected to them but theyve been very helpful and very friendly. Its a great group of guys. Right now only one installment is planned but if its successful, more such events could happen in the future. Lopata, 48, hails from nearby Ellicott City, Md. He spent about 10 years in Baltimore and has been in D.C. for about 10 (he lives in Takoma Park). Hes a promoter, indie record label partner, VJ and Realtor. Ive always dabbled in several things at once, he says. For years he was in hospitality but has always had a hand in music. For a time he sang in a band. Lopata is single though a relationship is what initially drew him to Washington. He enjoys traveling, sightseeing and biking in his free time.

Change is hard, but dont be afraid to try

and efcient, you may need a trainer. Sure, you will have to invest more nancially upfront, but youll have extra cash leftover anyway from all the booze/desserts/ cigarettes you arent buying. On that note, chances are if you read our column regularly and follow us on Facebook and Twitter, you have a goal of nding that special someone in 2012. Yes, we know dating isnt easy. So before you decide you are ready to be proactive and hire a matchmaker, ask yourself a few questions. Most importantly, are you in a position (emotionally, physically, nancially) to start dating? Are you clear about what you are looking for in a relationship/partner, and is it a realistic vision? Are you ready to let go of control and perhaps date outside the box? If you are single and wondering why, heres news: What you are doing isnt working for you. It doesnt mean youre not dateable or wont ever nd someone; you just need to be proactive. Pushing yourself to nd someone outside your comfort zone is hard to do on your own. Let an expert a matchmaker, a therapist, a relationship coach help you achieve your relationship goals and support you in the process. Many of us resolve in the new year to further our careers and professional stability. Is this the year you want to take your career to the next level? Are you ready to branch out on your own and start your dream business? Its going to be tough, but there is nothing better than being passionate and loving what you do for a living. You can do all the planning in the world to launch the next stage of your career, but sometimes getting over that next hump and getting motivated to work twice as hard to get there requires working with a mentor. Setting these goals usually comes with a lot of internal pressure, which leads to failure in many cases. Positive change is great, but change can be hard. Here are some tips on how to keep your resolutions for 2012, while pushing yourself outside your comfort zone to achieve them. Before making your resolutions, always make sure they are attainable. Think: Can I stick to this resolution on a bad day? Can I continue to reset my goals as I accomplish the small ones? Can I really do this? Being successful achieving lofty goals is easier when you release some of the extra pressure put on yourself by hiring a professional coach or working together with a buddy for support. Having a clear plan put in place by yourself and an adviser is always an effective way to achieve your goals. Dont be afraid to ask for help from different support systems. . If you are someone who wants to lose 20 pounds by the middle of May so you can be bikini/board short ready for summer, start making changes now. Yes, big lifestyle changes and weight loss can be difcult, but not if you put things into perspective. Small adjustments, such as shifting your food choices, eating smaller portions, limiting your alcohol intake, hitting the gym regularly (and actually sweating there) are doable for just about anyone. D.C. gay restaurateurs bring Manhattan-style drag shows to their pub

For LEnfant Caf & Bar co-owners Christopher Lynch and Jim Ball, boredom is the mother of invention. After working all weekend, says Ball, he and Lynch sometimes like to go out on Sunday nights. Increasingly they became uninterested in what was offered so they decided to do something themselves. Together theyve come up with Speakeasy at LEnfant, a bimonthly supper club and cabaret featuring wellknown, downtown New York drag artists. The likable duo who long ago switched from being boyfriends to business partners/friends is recreating a vibe they once knew in Manhattan, where they lived prior to opening LEnfant in Adams Morgan in 2003. Theyre modeling Speakeasy on Bar dO, the storied West Village lounge where legendary performance artist and drag diva Joey Arias headlined a cabaret of talented drag performers throughout most of the 90s and early 2000s. Initially Lynch and Ball aspired to nd a Joey Arias type for Speakeasy. But then reconsidered and thought why not go for the real thing? In September, the canny partners contacted Arias via Facebook and pitched their plan. To their delight, Arias agreed. So far, thereve been two Speakeasy test pilots at LEnfant: In late November, Arias and fellow Bar dO alumnae Flotilla DeBarge and Sade Pendarvis performed two Sunday night shows of soulful song and hilarious banter for sold-out houses. Outrageous, smart, spontaneous and a tad messy, the evening was a success by all counts. Then in mid-December, DeBarge (whose vitae includes Broadway and lm work) returned with a solo holiday show. Speakeasys regular bimonthly Sunday night schedule kicks off Jan. 14 with both a 7 p.m. dinner show, and a 10:30 cocktail late show. Reservations are required (go to lenfantcafe.com). In addition to Arias and DeBarge, Lady Bunny of Wigstock fame is slated for upcoming appearances. Arias signature look is black lingerie and Betty Page bangs. Hes widely known for channeling Billie Holiday. His credits include a six-year stint as the Mistress of Seduction in Cirque du Soleils Zumanity in Las Vegas, and this April he brings his well-received New York show Arias with a Twist to D.C.s Woolly Mammoth Theatre. Rarely does Arias do small Speakeasy sort of gigs anymore. But what keeps him interested in coming back, is the idea of trying new material and experimenting with something new: Looks, jokes, new tunes and to see what works. Its important to remember where you started and keep your chops up. Arias adds, Im also interested in [including] D.C. talent. But [they] have to sing live and be witty ... not nasty! Its not a drag show. Speakeasy is a real cabaret with rst class service and entertainment. No one does this anymore. Flotilla DeBarge is equally smitten with Speakeasy: I take a little getting used to. Im big and brash a mix of early Bette Midler, Tyler Perrys Medea and some Louise Jefferson. So far D.C. audiences seem to be embracing me, my humor, my whole persona. Im very grateful to them and [LEnfant owners] for giving me free reign with what I do. Speakeasy isnt the rst time Lynch and Ball have lled idle hours with fun at their intimate venue. When faced with dull Saturday afternoons a year ago, they perked things up with La Boum (which in French means teenage house party). Once a week, they close the blinds and serve a boozy brunch with loud music and entertainment. As very hands-on hosts, Ball successfully plays the comic to Lynchs straight man. They appear to enjoy themselves immensely and work hard to ensure that their customers do the same. As restaurateurs, Lynch and Ball agree that a lot of what they do is theatrical. They liken opening their cafs doors to raising the curtain. When customers arrive, the owners and staff are on. For them, launching a cabaret at LEnfant is a natural extension of serving food and drink. La Boum is fully booked through April. People love it. Judging from early response, it looks like it will be the same with Speakeasy, says Lynch. We think its going to be explosive.

A glimpse inside the White House

Windy City anthology of stories, poems a mixed bag
cabbie spots two men making out in the back of his vehicle, he overreacts and tries to kick them out. The date is quickly over, but the war has just begun. As the saying goes, if Mama aint happy, aint nobody happy. But what if Mama is listed as Daddy? In I Am My Daughters Dad by Coya Paz, the distinction is both hilarious and irritating. In The Mudroom by Nadine C. Warner, the presence of a toddler enriches his mothers lives but causes lesbian bed death. Can feng shui, a sense of humor, and paint restore their dance together? And sometimes, you really have to relax and learn to remain unfazed. Thats especially true when youre the passenger in a car driven by someone who was born male but is transitioning and dressed to kill, and youve just been stopped by a serious-looking state trooper. In Darla Speeding by Deb R. Lewis, youll see why life is much more interesting when you roll with the ow. Like so many anthologies, Windy City Queer is a mixed bag. There will be stories in here that you wont like. There are poems you might not understand. A few of the contributions will seem too long, while others will make you growl in frustration because of their brevity. Some will make you laugh, some will make you hate and some will break your heart. The good news is that you dont have to read everything. Editor Kathie Bergquist has pulled together a nice variety of works to t a variety of readers and moods, which makes this an easy book to browse for ve minutes or for ve hours. And theres the beauty of a book like this: when youre busy, restless, or youre packing for vacation, you want a pick-upand-put-down kind of read. A perfect t, Windy City Queer probably sounds pretty good right now.

Gratitude and serenity

A friends death serves as reminder that we all have something to live for
exercise with useless merit but it works for me and always lifts my spirit. I know for me I am lifted when I acknowledge I am grateful for having my life and not someone elses. Essentially, my perspective is that my cards have been dealt and while I may be able to shufe the cards, I cant change the deck. And my life is my own to live it how I choose. This may all sound very esoteric but isnt there enough complaining in this world and cant we all benet from a regular dose of gratitude? And cant we all create an experience that allows us to thrive and prevail despite what life throws at us? I have no hair, my computer sucks, I dont have a boyfriend and the convenience store clerk is not paying me enough attention. I can nd just about anything big or small to complain about its really easy for me, too easy perhaps. My challenge is remembering the good in my life, again big or small. And I believe that gratitude should coincide with compassion, love and understanding. I learned the Serenity prayer at a young age from my Mom who recited it regularly as a reprieve from living with an alcoholic, my Dad. It may have seemed to have gone in one ear and out the other back then, but it resonates quite a bit with me today. And whether you believe in God or not its message is non-denominational and you dont have to be in recovery or a 12-step program to embrace it. For those unfamiliar it goes, Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. I can recall countless situations where I recited this prayer over and over again in my head to help me through a difcult situation. So if I have caught your attention and you have read this far, I am giving you a daily assignment. I will keep it very simple for you your job, should you choose to accept it, is two-fold. First, write down three things you are grateful for. Keep it simple and remember the basics like I have food and shelter today. Also, add to this list as often as possible so you see there are more than just three things in your life to be grateful for. Second, tell at least one person each day that you are grateful for having them in your life and why.

This is the time of year to make resolutions, right? Well, yes, but resolutions based on a date and time of year tend to be tenuous at best. Making a decision to alter a behavior, take an action or stop procrastinating over a particular task cannot be accomplished based on a date on the calendar. Yes, changes involve action, but more importantly change involves perspective and a state-of-mind and daily habits. So this week I am not providing you with resolution tips you are on your own there. But what I do want to share is how grateful I am to be alive and healthy. Today, I learned that a friend lost his battle with cancer. Peter was taken far too soon and the world has lost a great soul. Last week, I attended a funeral for a friends Mom. Anyone of us or someone dear to us could die tomorrow or now. Too melodramatic? I think not, and while I may be sounding morose the point I am trying to make is that we all have something to live for. We all, despite our circumstances can nd something to be grateful for, if only for being alive. I am generally a daily journal writer and I sometimes write a gratitude list, particularly when I am feeling like my life does not amount to anything and that I have nothing going for me. Yes, it is rather reactive and my resolution (remember, I am not writing about resolutions this week) this year is to be more proactive and less reactive, better preparing me for living life on lifes terms. When I write the gratitude list I always feel better it sounds like an oversimplied

Leather enthusiasts gear up for next weekends MAL events
Gay leather enthusiasts from all over the East Coast and beyond will be in Washington next weekend for the 32nd annual Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend, which typically draws between 2,000-3,000 to its various events. The festivities kick off Thursday at 9 p.m. at the Eagle for a former MAL title holders bar night. Most events, though, will be at the Hyatt Regency the events host hotel. The other main exception is the Sunday night Reaction dance, to be held at the 9:30 club. Having as much as possible at the Hyatt was a big reason organizers moved the weekend there after 10 years at the Plaza in Thomas Circle. Last year, the rst held at the Hyatt, drew mixed reviews, even among organizers. It was OK, says Patrick Grady, this years event chair. This year should be much better though. We rented the entire hotel this time so therell be no non-MAL guests there. Last year was a mixed crowd but this year we have the entire 830 rooms. Grady says feedback from last years attendees was taken seriously. There were people who were upset last year, says Peter Wesselton, a D.C. resident who has his own dungeon. There were people who were upset with the way the hotel handled everything. There were a whole list of donts no touching, no leather in the lobby so a lot of guys were pretty pissed off . These are professional people, lawyers, doctors, dentists with high standing who just want to be able to let their hair down and not be babysat. Although the Thomas Circle locale gave them easy access to the Green Lantern, a proleather club that supports the event, Grady says overall the Hyatt makes more sense. We had more or less outgrown the Plaza and the guests have made comments that they like to have as much as possible under one roof, he says. We could never be sure how much space wed have at the Plaza and with the potential for cold weather and snow not that that deters many leather folks but it just makes it more convenient. They can Metro to Union
Station and then well have shuttle buses to the two bars were visiting. The full package weekend is $180 and guests can register anytime for events. Staple events like leather cocktails and the Mr. Leather contest are once again on the schedule. Other events, like Blowoff and a new party dubbed Luther, piggyback on MAL but have no ofcial ties to the weekend Grady says. The only things sponsored by us are the ones at the hotel and the Reaction Dance. They have other events at the Eagle and such and thats ne, but unless its in the hotel, its not really part of MAL
weekend, Grady says. Grady says he has no idea how many come from out of town for the weekend versus attendees from the D.C. area. The event will be held per its contract at the Hyatt for two more years at least. Full details are at leatherweekend.com.

Fox remembered fondly for voice, warm spirit

wired to feel as though I or they had done anything wrong. At his cabaret act Be Yourself, Everyone Else is Taken as part of Signatures Sizzling Summer Cabaret series last summer, one of Foxs brothers was present and Fox told a story of taking their (straight) father to a Pittsburgh gay bar. Fox was surprised to nd his father getting cozy with a bear at the bar. I was like, Dad, are you OK?, Fox said. He said, Go away, this guy is buying me drinks. Foxs last performance was at an album release party for his friend, fellow musician Tom Nichols, in November. Hed been feeling dizzy for several weeks and though an initial battery of tests revealed nothing, a second round found him immediately admitted to the hospital. After one round of chemotherapy, doctors told Fox nothing further could be done. Family and friends declined to elaborate on his illness but said he kept his trademark positive outlook to the end. His siblings and closest friend Antonio Casavez a former lover who came from Australia to be with him in his nal weeks were with him when he died just after midnight Monday. He was total Peter Fox to the end, Nichols says. Like many people, I considered him extended family. We were extremely close and had done lots and lots of musical projects together. I produced his rst album he had a onein-a-million voice. Fox and Nichols were roommates for about three years before Fox bought his own place in Southwest Washington. Nichols remembers him as a motorcycle enthusiast and a great roommate. He was a true artist, Nichols said of
his friend. He had a unique ability to make every single person he encountered feel like they were the only person in the room. Many other friends remembered Fox fondly this week and peppered his Facebook page with tributes. Its very hard to even describe what hes been in my life, Casavez says. So incredible and uplifting. Its just very hard to imagine not being in touch with him on a day-to-day basis. Jody Manor was also one of Foxs closest friends and the two spent many days and nights on motorcycle adventures together, even at one point a few years ago going into a cycle-related business together before Fox opted to plunge full steam ahead in music. Manor is glad Fox realized his dream recently of buying a new BMW motorcycle, which he says his late friend was completely obsessed over. Peter was a rare and beautiful soul, Manor says. Ive been re-reading old e-mails the last few days trying to get ready to speak at the service Friday. He was incredibly wise and a great listener and an incredibly compassionate person. He was denitely a real person and full of foibles just like everybody. He had a strong personality. But he is going to be terribly missed. This has left a huge hole for so many people. Theres something about riding long distances together in the desert. You talk about things and, I dont know, you just really get to know somebody and he was such a beautiful, beautiful spirit. Results owner Doug Jeffries, whos hosting a tribute event for Fox today at his Stroga business (1808 Adams Mill Road, N.W.) just after the Foundry service, knew Fox from his years of working out at Results. He was one of the sweetest men, just one of the sweetest, most considerate people Ive ever met, Jeffries says. I never heard a bad word about him, not
once his loss is going to be felt around the city for quite some time. You could not nd a better man and it really makes you wonder why it was him instead of yourself. He was just so incredibly kind, so universally liked and admired and I dont even have to tell you how stunningly beautiful the man was. You wonder how and why this would happen. Its so hard to wrap your head and thoughts around. Daren Phillips guesses he knew Fox for about 15 years having also met him at Results on U Street where Vida is now. Peter was so sweet and genuine, Phillips says. We didnt hang out all the time but he was the kind of person, you know, even if you didnt hang out with him all the time, you just loved him and he just brightened up your day. Phillips says Foxs guileless demeanor was refreshing in a jaded town like Washington. Im not trying to be mean because I really love D.C., but many times in a city that is so cynical about a lot of different things, you know with the nature of politics and stuff in D.C., then you run into people every once in a while who just arent caught up in any of that. They love life and they love people and of all the many, many people Ive known in D.C. over the years, Peter was probably the number one person who was like that and it was so refreshing and I think if you talked to another hundred people who knew him, they would say the same thing. Musically, Fox favored jazzy standards and inspirational originals. He and a small combo worked through hits like The Way You Look Tonight, Someone to Watch Over Me and Lean On Me during his Signature show last summer. He closed with the Carpenters Sometimes and dedicated it to his family and friends. A Blade review called it sweet, appropriate, tender and (lacking) even a whiff
of irony Fox is an anachronism in the best sense of the word. Manor said music was Foxs dream and it was denitely a conscious decision about ve years ago for him to invest in it full throttle. Thats one of the main reasons we put the motorcycle business on hold, he says. Music was his rst love and he wanted to make that his career and in the past few years he made enormous strides in that. He always kept his regular job, but his primary energy went into his music career. Fox dated here and there in recent years but was single when he died. Friends say his relationship with Casavez evolved over time and even when they were no longer romantically involved, the two talked daily and were, according to Nichols soul mates. I cant think of anybody he lived with in the past few years, but oh yeah, Peter was popular, Manor says with a chuckle. But Antonio is really the keeper of the ame. Even when Antonio was living all over the world, they talked all the time. Nichols agrees. I think they always kept a special place for each other in their hearts, he says. I think they knew it was never gonna work out for them to be partners but they were soul mates and as close as brothers. Though Jeffries had known Fox for years, he was taken aback the rst time he heard him sing. I remember being at the Nationals Stadium and I was just absolutely blown away, he says. It really makes you appreciate life and appreciate every single day because nothing is guaranteed. Is your house sick?

If its not right for you, theres a good chance it is but the first step is diagnosing the problem

In 1998 Robert Redford had us whispering to skittish horses. In 2004 we began to watch Cesar Millan whisper to dogs with behavioral problems. Then in 2005 Jennifer Love Hewitt started whispering to the ghosts of our past. I often whisper to my home. Sometimes it answers. With the holiday season now over, I recently asked it, How did you get so dirty? It just giggled and coughed up another dust bunny. For some people, home means a hub of social or family activity. For others, it might be a calming retreat from the pressures of daily life. Or perhaps its just a place to drop your gear or catch a nap between hard work and hard play. Whether condo or coop, rowhouse or detached, new or historic, your home says a lot about you and can greatly contribute to your overall health and happiness, so as I begin a new home search with a buyer I always ask, What do you like and dislike about your current home? Asking this question is akin to taking a medical history. Like the basis for a differential diagnosis, the answers help me attain my goal: to find each buyer a place that encompasses his likes while carving away at his dislikes within the confines of his budget. And like a delicate surgical operation, its not always easy, it sometimes takes a while and insurance doesnt always cover it. Over the years I have found several answers to my question surfacing so often that I have amassed what I refer to as my Book of Home Maladies. Im sure you and your real estate agent will recognize the most popular ones below. Tom Thumb Syndrome: Symptoms include not being able to fit your bed in the bedroom and still walk around the room, the inability to completely open the kitchen refrigerator, stove and dishwasher simultaneously, the constant bruising of hips from bumping against sharp corners and closet bloat. Diagnosis: the home is too small. Short-term treatment involves immediate decluttering with long-term results dependent on the surgical removal of the resident and reattachment to a larger home. Incredible Hulk Disorder: My own house suffers from this malady, which becomes increasingly uncomfortable with age, particularly for the Boomer generation. Symptoms include a dining room that hasnt hosted a dinner party since 2008, an expensively redone basement recreation room where nobody recreates, two guest rooms that have seen only one guest each since 2007 and more space than I will ever again want to clean (see dust bunnies above). Diagnosis: the home is too big. Im on the donor list for a new one and my name should come up this year or next. Methuselah Infection: The most notable symptoms include jaundiced appliances, whole-house fever and psoriasis of
the walls. Diagnosis: the home is outdated or is missing desired features. Effective treatment of existing homes may include immediate transplant of infected gold or green-tinted appliances with stainless steel, a transfusion of central air conditioning and curettage of offending wallpaper. If such operations are cost-prohibitive, however, then it may be best to trade the infected home for a newer model. Situational Avoidance Affliction: Like personality disorders that can take years of psychotherapy to uncover, symptoms of this malady may not present themselves at first glance. Upon further evaluation, however, we find a series of emotional extremes or undesirable traits. The current home may suffer from too much or not enough noise or activity. Feelings of isolation may result if it is too far from transportation, dining, shopping or work. Proximity
to major highways, power lines or liquor stores may leave us feeling depressed. Diagnosis: the home is in the wrong location and may be contributing to an overall feeling of malaise and disassociation. Begin treatment with your local mortgage loan officer and then add a liberal dose of open houses on a weekly basis. Whatever your homes malady, you will find that early detection is critical to successful treatment. Self-examination is the first step, so if your home is whispering any of these common symptoms to you, please consult your local real estate agent immediately. In the meantime, take two parking spaces and call me in the morning.
