Introduction
Decolonization is the process by which a colony gains its independence from a colonial power, either by attaining independence, integrating with the administering power or another state, or establishing a "free association" status. The process may involve peaceful negotiation and/or violent uprising by the local population. In the twentith century, this process was particularly accelerated after the end of the Second World War, which saw independence in many Asian and African states. However, decolonization is still an on-going process in the remaining sixteen Non-Self-Governing Territories. In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1990-2000 as the International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism and adopted a Plan of Action. In 2001, the Second International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism was proclaimed. This booklist serves as a guide to help you locate resources on decolonization available at National Library Board libraries.
