IMAGES AND FASHION AT LE PETIT PALAIS
PAR PATRICK DEMARCHELIER
From September 27TH, 2008 until January 4TH, 2009, Le Petit Palais,
Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris, presents a
comprehensive selection of 400 photographs by Patrick
Demarchelier.
The art of photography, considered until recently a lesser art, has finally been
recognized as a fine art. Photography exhibitions are increasingly popular
around the world. This holds even more truth in the world of fashion where the
image is essential. France, a source of many talents, benefits from a unique
aura in this craft.

THE « DEMARCHELIER TOUCH »
Patrick Demarchelier’s style and talent has elevated his name to the
pantheon of the great photographers. An autodidact, he became one of the
most talented photographers in the world of fashion and beauty.
Under the umbrella of diversity and contrast, this exhibition travels through
several decades of inspiration where portraits of celebrities hang side-by- side
with portraits of unknown muses…

CELEBRITIES IN-FOCUS
He seeks to unveil the sublime natural essence of his subject and reveal their
inner optimism.
Madonna, 1990
Invited by the Princess Diana in 1989, he agrees to photograph her with a hair
stylist and make-up artist. As a result of this first encounter, she asked him to
become her official photographer.
He, therefore, became the first non-British official photographer of the Royal
family.
Beyond his privileged status, he was a dear friend of Lady Diana until her
tragic death.

In 2004, he embarked upon a new exclusive relationship with Condé Nast
publications (Glamour, Mademoiselle, Vogue etc) where he continues to
grace hundreds of covers with his photographs.

EXHIBITION DESIGN AT LE PETIT PALAIS
The process became gradually more intuitive because the mixture of images creates
a dialogue between each individual print, each cluster of prints and the traditional
artworks.
In this visual environment, our desire is to celebrate the opposition and contradictions
that appear. This installation does not prescribe a fixed narrative, but rather brings
harmony to chaos and contrast. This marriage of many contrasts unites the visitors in
a contemporary visual osmosis. »

THE PETIT PALAIS,
MUSEE DES BEAUX-ARTS DE LA VILLE DE PARIS
© Christophe Fouin
An architectural gem from the XIX Century, le Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la ville de Paris, has
reopened its doors to the public after major renovations.
Built for the “Universal Exhibition” in 1900, this building became in 1902 the Musée des Beaux Arts de la
ville de Paris.
It displays a beautiful collection of paintings, religious icons, sculptures, antique rugs, and art objects from
Antiquity to the turn of the XX Century.
The Antique and Medieval collections are side-by-side with artworks from the French and Italian
Renaissance and Dutch and Flemish paintings. The the XVIII th and XIXth Century collection includes works
by the prestigious artists including: Fragonard, David, Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Pissarro, Monet,
Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne. The Museum boasts an important collection of works on paper including
complete series of etchings by Rembrandt, Durer and Callot.
The contemporary art and fashion design have a strong presence in le Petit Palais, Since 1998, Zao Wou-
Ki, Quentin Blake, the collections du Fond Municipal d’art contemporain Sakina M’Sa and now Patrick
Demarchelier occupy the rooms of Le Petit Palais. These temporary exhibits further the cultural mission of
the establishment: promoting an aesthetic and intellectual experience of the creative process.
On the international front, since 1998, le Petit Palais offers its great cultural heritage in partnership with
major cultural institutions abroad.
The museum is open to the public every day from 10AM until 6PM, except on Mondays and
national holidays.

For those who are ready to give everything, we can give a little.
The opening gala for Patrick Demarchelier’s exhibition at the Petit Palais will
raise funds for the social mandate of Police-Action Solidaire, for whom Patrick
shares a deep solidarity with the men and women who risk their lives each
day to protect their citizens.
Each year, several thousand police officers are injured or killed on duty…
Police-Action Solidaire offers support to deceased members of the police
force (2) and their loved-ones.
The organization supports parents, spouses, and especially children of fallen
officers by providing emotional and financial assistance including academic
scholarships…
This is why the mission of Police-Action Solidaire is so important.
To accomplish their ambitious goals, such as a specialized rehabilitation
center, the financial needs are significant and constant.
(1) Police-Action Solidaire is a department of the U.A.CP.P.S.I, an association created 1920 is recognized
officially as « a charitable organization ».
(2) The men and women who have chosen to risk their lives each day for the protection of others: Police
officers, Gendarmes, Firemen and women, etc…
