STATEPOINT MEDIA
With retirement accounts and real
estate values still recovering from the
recession, and living costs on the rise,
many retired seniors are struggling to
pay their bills. According to the Na-
tional Council on Aging, 20 million
Americans, 60 years of age or older, are
economically insecure.
But experts say that with the right
tools and planning, you can avoid mon-
ey woes.
The frst step is to get a handle on
your fnances, advises Aaron Forth,
Vice President and General Manager of
Intuit Personal Finance Group. Know-
ing more about your current fnancial
situation means you can more effec-
tively stick to a budget.
Luckily, new tools are helping se-
niors on a fxed income to do just that.
There are many things you can do to
help make ends meet in an uncertain
economy:
Work From Home
If infation is causing your living
expenses to rise, but youre on a fxed-
income, you may want to consider tak-
ing on some part-time work to supple-
ment your funds. Working from home
is becoming an increasingly easy option
for seniors who may be less mobile
than during their younger days. Many
companies hire part-time freelancers
to complete work remotely. From tu-
toring to transcription services, you can
earn extra dollars without getting off
the couch.
Budget Online
If youre still squinting over your
checkbook ledger, its time to try some-
thing new.
Let software do the heavy lifting
for you, advises Aaron Forth, Vice
President and General Manager of In-
tuit Personal Finance Group. Its easy
to make costly mistakes like missing
bill payments when youre doing it all
by hand.
Take advantage of free services on
the Internet like Mint.com. For those
who prefer managing money on the
desktop, purchase fnancial software
like Quicken to help you manage your
fnances, create a budget, and meet f-
nancial goals.
Cut Expenses
You may be familiar with tradition-
al coupon clipping, but online sites like
LivingSocial and Groupon can help you
fnd helpful local deals on the things
you need, such as medical exams and
food, or the things you want, like birth-
day presents for your grandchildren.
Just be careful to not get carried away
on purchases. The best way to do this is
to stick to goods and services that you
would have bought at full cost anyway.
And, of course, trim back on un-
necessary expenditures. For example,
many television programs are available
for free online, making your cable bill
a redundant expense. Likewise, if you
use a mobile phone, consider eliminat-
ing your landline.
Even if youre living on a fxed in-
come theres no need to go into debt.
By tracking your sources of income
and your expenditures, you can achieve
your fnancial goals and avoid debt.

of the U.S. population affected by diabetes, its quickly becoming

OBITUARIES
Winifred Mae Edison
Winifred Mae Edison, 89, a fourth-
generation Montcalm County resident,
and well-known elementary school teach-
er, passed away Dec. 28, 2011, at her
home in Howard City.
She was born on Sept. 19, 1922, to
Claud and Florence Young and raised
with her four brothers, Art, John, Keith
and Max on what eventually became a
Centennial Farm, fve miles southwest
of Lakeview. She graduated from Lakev-
iew High School and attended a Michi-
gan State Normal School in Ypsilanti
(EMU today). Winifreds teaching career
spanned four decades beginning with
one-room township schools and retiring
with 30 successful years in the Lakeview
School System.
In 1942 she met Jack Edison of Sand
Lake. Later that year he was fghting with
the Marines at Guadalcanal. The couple
stayed in touch throughout the war via a
number of love letters.
They married in 1944. Their married
life included brief stops in California,
Washington D.C., Sand Lake, eventually
settling in Lakeview where they raised
their sons, Mickey and Fred. They en-
joyed the small town setting, golfng,
playing cards and the camaraderie of
friends. Their adventurous spirit took
them to Upper Michigan, Canada, Alas-
ka, Europe, the East Coast, out West and
down to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas
where they spent winters for more than
20 years.
Many people remember Winnie as
a spirited little lady who loved her hus-
band, family and community. She was a
force when it came to teaching, organiz-
ing activities and competing in games.
She loved to entertain family and friends,
possessed a great sense of humor and al-
ways carried a pleasant smile.
Winnie is survived by her two sons,
their wives, daughter-in-law, fve grand-

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Ardith Robinson Karasinski
Mrs. Ardith Robinson Karasinski, 87, a longtime resident of
Howard City and Cedar Springs, passed away on Thursday, Dec.
29, 2011.
Born April 12, 1924, she was the only daugh-
ter of Vernon and Mary Robinsons seven chil-
dren. Shortly after graduating from Howard
City High school, she married Andrew Kara-
sinski of Sand Lake. Ardith and Andy spent
most of their marriage together on a small farm
across from Pine Lake with their 10 children.
As you might imagine, raising such a large
family was rewarding, but demanding. Ardith
took care of the home and children and Andy
worked a number of different jobs in Grand
Rapids, as well as being a gentleman farmer to provide everything
they needed for their modest life. Ma and Pa, as they were known
around the house, were often asked how they managed to raise 10
children without losing their minds. Most of the time, they would
just smile at each other knowing that together, with the help of
their kids, anything was possible. You see, theytaught their seven
daughters and three sons that the most important things in life are
not things at all. If you work hard, do the best you can every single
day, love your family, and have some fun along the way, your life
would be a success.
That success is evident every day and survived by Ardiths chil-
dren, Susan Dunn, Bonnie Karasinski, Barbara Norman, Shirley
and Donald Wittingen, Julia Leshinsky, Michael and Janice Kara-
sinski, Brian Trethewey, Patrick and Karen Karasinski, Charles
and Diane Karasinski, Mary and Ronald Krick; by her grandchil-
dren, Pamela and Del Thebo, Mark and Rhonda Dunn, Lara and
Andrew Kehe, Greg Norman, Paul MacDonald, Lisa and Derek
Clark, Heather and Thomas Ison, Amanda Copeland, Michael
Karasinski, Jr., Scott and Courtney Karasinski, Krista and Kelly
OGrady, Kimberly and Ezio Fortuna, Melissa and Jeff Zorn, Ste-
ven and Jessica Karasinski, Mary Karasinski, Laurie Karasinski,
Rose Karasinski, Robert Karasinski, Jennifer and Guy Schnepp,
Ronald Jr. and Mehgan Krick, and Andrew Krick; her 38 great-
grandchildren; and her one great-great grandchild. She was pre-
ceded in death by her husband, Andrew Karasinski; her daughter,
Linda Trethewey; her great-granddaughters, Jennifer Thebe and
Katherine Clark; her son-in-law, James Dunn; her parents, Ver-
non and Mary Robinson; her brothers, Howard, Donald, Richard,
Lawrence, Arthur and Royce Robinson.
Funeral Services took place at Mary Queen of Apostles in Sand
Lake with Father Joe Kenshol as celebrant. Arrangements were
entrusted to the Heckman Funeral home in Howard City.

Another small business
man ready to move
TO THE EDITOR:
I have lived in the township for the past 13
years when I purchased fve acres and moved my
asphalt business here. Prior to that, my grandfa-
ther and father did work in Reynolds Township,
so I represent the third generation. I employ four
people, so in a small way contribute to the econo-
my of the township. Everything was fne until this
year when I received a visit from Mr. Dejong, the
zoning administrator, hired by the township.
Even though I live in the county he said my
two trucks and asphalt equipment couldnt be on
my property. Why all of a sudden after 13 years? I
have two great neighbors that adjoin my property
and they have no problem with my equipment be-
ing there. I asked him why the harassment all of
a sudden. He said he was told by someone that
John Powell turned me and other people in. Hav-
ing known John since I was a kid, I knew it wasnt
true and I told him so. I went to John and we de-
cided to confront Mr. Dejong and did so at the last
township meeting.
The discussion got rather heated and of course
Mr. Dejong said he was just passing on informa-
tion he had heard. John wanted to know exactly
who told him so we could go and confront that
person right then. After evading the question, he
fnally said that the person had moved, very con-
venient. There were other witnesses to this con-
frontation. I dont understand why township of-
fcials arent trying to save small businesses in this
community.

gression of more serious vision
complications, such as diabetic
retinopathy and related vision
loss. The CDC also notes that
approximately 11 percent of U.S.
adults with diabetes have some
sort of visual impairment, and
diabetic retinopathy is projected
to affect 16 million people with
diabetes by the year 2050.
Rates of diabetes are even
higher among certain ethnic mi-
norities. Among African Ameri-
cans, the prevalence of diabetes
is more than 70 percent higher
than it is among non-Hispanic
whites, and the frequency of di-
abetic retinopathy is 50 percent
higher, according to the Ameri-
can Diabetes Association. His-
panics experience diabetes at a
rate of three times the general
population and are more likely
to develop the condition and re-
lated complications at an earlier
age, says the Cleveland Clinic
Department of Patient Educa-
tion and Health Information.
Asian Americans are more sus-
ceptible to type 2 diabetes, the
Ohio State University Medical
Center reports, which can lead
to heightened vision-related
damage from UV exposure, re-
duced contrast sensitivity and
increased light sensitivity.
Fortunately, there are steps
you can take. Optometrist Dr.
Brian Chou, of EyeLux Optom-
etry in San Diego, points out the
importance of proper eyecare
and eyewear when managing
diabetes. There is no question
that diabetes can lead to serious
vision complications, explains
Dr. Chou. Regular, compre-
hensive eye exams can help you
to maintain healthy sight overall
and can alert your eye doctor of
any underlying signs of diabetes
and other health issues. Adap-
tive lenses, such as Transitions
lenses, can help prevent squint-
ing, reduce glare and block 100
percent of UV rayskeeping
your eyes protected from UV ex-
posure.

Every year, vehicle manufac-
turers issue millions of recalls
to help maintain safety and val-
ue. But did you know that one
in three recalled cars never get
fxed?
For various reasons, many
car owners fail to act on recall
noticeseven though manufac-
turers will fx these vehicles at
no cost. While some recalls are
issued to correct minor faws in
original equipment, you dont
want to buy a vehicle that has
costly hidden problems, either.
If youre shopping used cars,
theres an easy way to help im-
prove your chances of buying
one without open recalls. Go to
recall.carfax.com to check vehi-
cles for open recalls at no cost.
Then, you can feel more conf-
dent about the used car youre
buying. You can also get more
information about a specifc re-
call at safercar.gov.
Knowing about an open re-
call could help you avoid buying
a used car with problems. Plus,
fxing recalls helps maintain ve-
hicle value and safety. To learn
more, visit recall.carfax.com.
Used-car buyers need
to check for recalls
LOOKOUT: Increasingly,
used-car buyers are check-
ing to see if a recall has been
announced for a car they
want to buy.

First to le. On February 15, 2009, Mr. Desai
led for divorce in the United Kingdom, where the
Desais had both previously resided. On June 10,
2009, the UK court granted him interim custody of
the children. A year later, on March 3, 2010, the UK
Court issued a ruling that unless an objection was
led within 6 weeks, a divorce would be granted
and Mr. Desai would retain nal custody.
A different custody ruling was obtained. On
April 19, 2010, Mrs. Desai led for divorce in
the Washtenaw County, Michigan, courthouse in
Ann Arbor. Apparently she wanted to ght the UK
ruling with a Michigan ruling. On April 21, 2010
she obtained an emergency custody order from
the Washtenaw court without a full hearing, by
convincing the court that irreparable injury or harm
would result by delaying a decision until Mr. Desai
could appear here and be heard. The order gave
her immediate custody of the Desais two children.
But it seems that in her petition requesting custody,
Mrs. Desai had alleged many inaccurate and
misleading facts.
The Court is not amused. Our legal system does
not approve of forum shopping, and especially
not of wasting precious time read money by
ling a lawsuit which has already been led in
and is being handled by another jurisdiction.
That the case was led in another country makes
no difference. Mr. Desai would win if he could
prove that Mrs. Desai knew of the UK case, and
thus had knowingly and intentionally mislead the
court. After Mr. Desai received his copy of the
Washtenaw county paperwork granting Mrs. Desai
custody, on April 26, 2010, he requested to take
her deposition immediately.
Depositions involve both parties, both lawyers,
and a court approved stenographer who makes
the ofcial court record of the proceeding. Its a
pricey part of litigation. During the deposition
the opposition lawyer asks any and all questions,
which the person being deposed must answer
under oath. Mr. Desai needed Mrs. Desai to answer
certain questions under oath, for him to win big in
Washtenaw County. Mrs. Desai could not avoid
being deposed.
You pay your own lawyer. Each party pays their
own lawyers bills in a typical domestic relations
Michigan court case unless you can t your
circumstances to a rule of law which allows the
judge to make the other person pay your legal bills.
Such a rule applied in this case. If Mrs. Desais suit
was led frivolously, the court could order her to
pay Mr. Desais lawyers fees (after all, if a law
suit was already pending somewhere, another one
had to be a frivolous suit, right?).
Why $10,000? Not only was the Washtenaw
County case and its April 21, 2010 custody order
dismissed for lack of jurisdiction which left the
United Kingdom court to make nal rulings on
custody but Mr. Desai was awarded $10,000 for
his attorney fees. Mrs. Desai had admitted at her
deposition that she knew about the UK proceeding
and its interim custody order before ling her suit.
In addition, she had contradicted the statements in
her petition, even admitted they were misleading.
She had intentionally deceived the court. The
judge was not pleased, and found her ling was
frivolous. Mrs. Desai was ordered to pay nearly
all the bills from Mr. Desais Michigan attorney,
to the tune of $10,000. Doesnt pay to mess with
the law.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
