Victory for PNP in
General Elections
Kingston, Jamaica:
T
he Jamaican opposition
Peoples National Party
(PNP) has secured the
majority of seats in the islands
general election held on Thursday
(December 29, 2011), and is
preparing to return to the seat of
Government.
According to preliminary
results, published by the
Electoral Office of Jamaica, the
PNP secured 42 seats, to defeat
the ruling Jamaica Labor Party
(JLP) which had 21.
Former Prime Minister and
president of the PNP, Portia
Simpson Miller, 66, will be the
new Prime Minister.
She became Jamaica's first
female prime minister in March
2006, after party delegates chose
her to succeed P. J. Patterson as
leader of the party. But she was
tossed out of office a year later in
a narrow election defeat.
On Thursday, she thanked her
supporters, at party headquarters
in Kingston where more than a
thousand elated partisans, decked
out in the party's color of orange,
swayed to reggae and soul tunes,
waved flags and clapped hands.
"I am humbled as I stand
before you, and I wish to thank
the Jamaican people for their
love, for their support and for
giving the People' s National
Party and the leader of the party
her own mandate, " she said, after
receiving hugs from candidates.
She has pledged to lift debt-
wracked Jamaica out of poverty,
secure foreign investment, and
create jobs.
JLP leader and Jamaica' s
youngest Prime Minister ever,
Andrew Holness, 39, said the
defeat would prompt a time of
introspection and reflection for
leaders of his Jamaica Labor
Party to examine what went
wrong. "I wish the new govern-
ment well. We hope for the bene-
fit of the country that they will do
a good job, " said Holness.
W
estchester County has ranked 9th among the 62
counties in New York State. That's according to
an annual survey conducted by the University of
Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
Westchester came in 9th for health outcomes and
2nd when it came to health factors.
The survey took into consideration certain health
factors including residents' tobacco use, obesity and
access to health care.
Acting County Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl
Archbald commented on the study saying, "There is
always room to improve. " She went on to add, "Health
disparities still exist, with communities of color and
people who lack health insurance who are at greater
reisk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and preventable
diseases. " Putnam County was ranked number 1 among
the State's counties when it came to healthy living and
lifestyles.

A
fter almost two years of a
vicious recession, followed
by another two years of an even
slower recovery, the U.S. econo-
my has finally entered the expan-
sion phase again, according to
economists.
Real gross domestic product
(GDP) increased 1.8 percent in the
third quarter of 2011, after
increasing 1.3 percent in the sec-
ond quarter, according to esti-
mates released on December 22,
2011 by the Bureau of Economic
Analysis.
The third quarter growth rate
was, however, revised down 0.2
percentage points from the second
estimate released in November.
However, to us ordinary peo-
ple the year 2011 was another
period plagued with more chal-
lenges than opportunities, with the
collapse of many companies
including venerable financial
institutions and thousands of
workers sent home.
But, local economists said
things are actually getting better,
not worse in NewYork State. This
is the time when smart people are
thinking and seeking ways to take
advantage of the positive gains in
the economy.
But, in order to take advan-
tage of the opportunities, we must
be empowered with the informa-
tion. We must keep pace with the
growing market trends and pre-
pare ourselves for the opportuni-
ties.
A lack of startup and opera-
tional capital is always a setback
for people in business. But, we
could solve the problem by trust-
ing and working more with each
other.
As members of African-
American communities, we are
known to have a very close social
network at the clubs, parties and
in the churches, but we often fail
to use our associations to make
money for each other.
Perhaps, we should be learn-
ing from Chinese and Korean
business people, whom we spend
millions with at fresh food and
grocery shops, but who fail to sup-
port our events and charities.
As we now know, these
Chinese and Koreans pooled their
monies and other resources to
supply our market needs. They are
strictly about business.
In 2012, let us pool our
resources and take advantage of
the business opportunities.

P Pe eo op pl l e e a ar re e t ta al l k ki i n ng g. . . . . . ! !
O
kay, so it is a new year and, like the rest of
the world, I have decided to make some
specific changes in my life.
One such change was to finally say "yes"
to a man, and Dear Lord do I say it, become a
wife to some lucky fella. No, it is not the alco-
hol that is still in my system, or the alcohol-
laced rum cake still in my belly talking, it is
just that I have matured and have finally
become a woman.
However, over the last few years, the
state of black love and the single black, bit-
ter female, has come to the forefront with
such movies as, Waiting to Exhale and For
Colored Girls Who Have considered Suicide
When the Rainbow is Enuf, makes me doubt
that I, Ms. Sandy Daley, will ever find love.
Never before has there been such a
microscopic eye focused on our relation-
ships, as young women, previously repressed
and afraid to discuss what ails them, are final-
ly beginning to open up and tackle the elephant
in the room.
Why are so many black women unmar-
ried and without a steady partner by their
side? Specifically, why do so many strong
independent black women, remain unmarried
and find it difficult to find love? Do black men
feel inferior to strong black women? Will 2012
be the year to change our thoughts and come
together in unison, as God intended?
Although statistics show that the percent-
age of black people marrying is more than it
has been since the late 1970s, the overall aver-
age of black women who will remain unmar-
ried is staggering, if not frightening. According
to the statistics, at least 45% of black women
are unmarried and the numbers are even high-
er if you are a successful black woman. Many
things can be attributed to this study, as not
only do black women outnumber black men,
but many black men are incarcerated, already
married, gay or have married outside of their
own race.
Many guys however, would state that
black women are too bitter, are always fuss-
ing and set their standards too high, and so they
are then turned off from dating black women
or even marrying them.
Black women are too strong-willed, too
stubborn and too argumentative, I heard a
friend of mine say recently. If only you guys
could be a little bit more feminine, and not as
fussy, we would marry you.
As I listened to this crock of baloney
Donovan, of course not his real name, was
spewing out of to me, I calmed myself and
really thought about what I had to say, before I
answered him. As I have known him for
awhile, and wanted to keep him as a friend, I
chose my words carefully and tried not to chew
him by the balls too much. His ignorance was
nauseating, but I wanted to help him out at this
point.
If it was not for the strength of the
black woman, which you so despise, your chil-
dren that perhaps not you, but a lot of your
brothas have neglected, would not be any-
where and would in the hands of the govern-
ment system, I started off by saying. The fact
that we have had to take care of your children,
care for them financially and emotionally,
should be seen as something that is honored,
respected and praised by you.
Our strength also allows us to not take the
easy road, as many of you have done. We lift
ourselves up by the bootstraps, go back to
school, become professionals in whatever
career we chose and are able to be an example
to our children of what you can do if you are
determined.
Do not use our strength against us, as we
are shining examples to the world, I finished
off by saying. I think I let him off easy, dont
you? To all the strong black women, I encour-
age you to hold onto the strength that you were
born with, and attained because of your strug-
gles. With that said, remain open hearted and
able to love, as one bad apple does not spoil the
whole bunch. Out there somewhere is your
prince charming, maybe not on a white horse
and with the best of credit, but with a heart to
love you, your weaknesses and also your
strengths. He will look you in the eye and say,
Baby, where have you been all my life, as I
could have used your support by my side a
long time ago; one mans trash is another
mans treasure. The bitter black woman should
never be used to describe you, as you are still
a young girl at heart.

Youth Minister
Gets 22 years for
Rape and Sexual
Abuse
A
former minister at Mariners
Temple Baptist Church in Lower
Manhattan, Jeremy Fulton, 29,
was sentenced to 22 years in prison on
December 20, 2011.
On April 3, 2011, Fulton pled guilty
to rape in the first degree, relating to the
rape and sexual abuse of five girls who
attended the church where Fulton also
served as the associate director.
This defendant used his position of
authority and respect, as a member of the
clergy, to win the trust of parents and
gain access to children for the purpose of
sexually abusing these girls, said
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R.
Vance, Jr. Children who survive sexual
abuse often face a lifetime of recovery.
We hope the conclusion of this case and
this sentence brings a measure of justice
to those victims and their families.
In all, the defendant admitted to sex-
ually abusing five children, four of whom
he had met through church-related pro-
grams. This abuse consisted of repeated
sexual intercourse with three of the
young victims and repeated sexual touch-
ing of all the children.
The victims ranged in age from 10 to
16 years old and, with at least two of the
girls, the abuse lasted for a period of sev-
eral years.
Fulton committed some of the abuse
on church property, and solicited sexual-
ly explicit photographs from one victim,
which he kept on his computer.

BRONX:
Nurses at Montefiore Medical Center
in the Bronx have averted a strike.
The New York State Nurses
Association said Friday that it has
negotiated a four-year contract for the
2,300 professional registered nurses
who work at the hospital.
As part of the contract, 125 new
R.N. positions will be created, and
nurses will get salary bumps of 7.5
percent over four years.
The Nurses Association says the
contract makes gains similar to those
at other unionized city hospitals.
Montefiore nurses will vote on
the contract in January.
Nurses at St. Luke's-Roosevelt
and Mount Sinai Medical Center
reached a deal earlier this week end-
ing the threat of a walkout at those
hospitals.

Police say Thomas Christopher, 35,

Sunday morning. Published reports say
Christopher was upset because al-Doori

This is not Christopher's first brush

Chinese Perfume
Importer Gets 12
Months in Prison
A
Chinese perfume importer was
sentenced in Brooklyn Monday

Court Justice Gets 27
Months for Attempted
Extortion and Bribery
F
ormer New York State Supreme Court
Justice Thomas J. Spargo was recently
sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gary
Sharpe in Albany, N.Y. to 27 months in
prison followed by two years of supervised
release for attempted extortion and bribery.
A federal jury convicted Spargo, 66,
on Aug. 27, 2009. Evidence introduced at
trial showed that on Nov. 13, 2003, Spargo
solicited a $10,000 payment from an attor-
ney with cases pending before him in
Ulster County, N.Y., while Spargo was
serving as a state supreme court justice.
The trial evidence showed that when the
attorney declined to pay the money, Spargo
increased the pressure to pay by a second
solicitation communicated through an
associate.
T
wenty-three-year old Vincent
Heyward of a Manhattan address was,
on December 12, sentenced to a total 428
years-to-life in prison, following his con-
viction for a series of violent sexual
attacks on five women in Hamilton
Heights and Chinatown, New York City.
On November 18, 2011, a jury in
New York State Supreme Court found
Heyward guilty of multiple felonies,
including eighteen counts of Predatory
Sexual Assault. As proven at trial,
Heyward violently attacked five women
during a two-month period in 2009.
On August 1, 2009, he grabbed a 59-
year-old woman from behind and pulled
her into an alley behind West 148th street,
where he raped, sodomized and robbed
her at knife-point. On August 10, 2009, he
followed a 23-year-old woman into her
apartment building at West 144th Street,
where he grabbed her from behind, held a
knife to her throat and raped and sodom-
ized and robbed her.
On August 18, 2009, Heyward ille-
gally entered an apartment building and
followed a 69-year-old woman into an
apartment building on Riverside Drive,
where he grabbed her, threw her to the
ground, squeezed her so tightly that she
had trouble breathing, and then he raped,
sodomized and robbed her.
On August 23, 2009 he illegally
entered an apartment building on Broome
Street, where he grabbed a 34-year-old
woman and dragged her down the stairs,
while beating her and slamming her head
into the floor. He robbed the woman, tried
to rape her and sexually abused her.
On September 7, 2009, Heyward
broke into the apartment of a 28-year-old
woman at West 147th Street and St.
Nicholas Avenue while she was sleeping.
He woke up the woman and raped, sodom-
ized and robbed her at knife-point.

for being illegal immigrants by state
and local law enforcement agencies,
the agency announced recently.
An Immigration and Customs
Enforcement officer prepares an
undocumented Salvadorian immigrant
for a deportation flight from Mesa,
Ariz. , to San Salvador on Dec. 8,
2010.
Detainees who "believe they may
be US citizens or victims of a crime"
may call (855) 448-6903 to talk to
ICE personnel who will collect
information from the individual and
refer it to the relevant ICE
Enforcement and Removal Operations
(ERO) Field Office for immediate
action, the agency said in a press
release.
The hotline will be available 24
hours a day, seven days a week, with
translation services in several lan-
guages provided from 7 am until mid-
night EST, the agency said.
The program is designed to curb
abuses occurring under the federal
governments 287(g) program which,
since 1996, has empowered scores of
state and local police agencies to
enforce federal immigration law with
controversial results, Reuters report-
ed.

visa: Through family relationship
with a U. S. citizen or legal perma-
nent resident, or Through employ-
ment
Q: How can I ent er t he v i s a or
green card l ot t ery ?
A: The Visa Office has set up a hot-
line at 202-331-7199 with recorded
information on the visa lottery.
Winners are notified by the National
Visa Center. Those who are not noti-
fied can assume they were not select-
ed and can re-enter the following
year.
Q: How do I appl y for an i mmi -
grant v i s a number?
A: You don't directly apply for an
immigrant visa number. In most
cases, your relative or employer
sends a visa petition to the Bureau of
Citizenship and Immigration
Services (previously INS) for you
(the beneficiary) to become an immi-
grant. (Certain applicants such as
priority workers, investors, certain
special immigrants, and diversity
immigrants can petition on their
own behalf. ) INS will tell the person
who filed the visa petition (the "peti-
tioner") if the visa petition is
approved. The Bureau of Citizenship
and Immigration Services (previous-
ly INS) will then send the approved
visa petition to the Department of
State's National Visa Center, where it
will remain until an immigrant visa
number is available.

The annual meet, now in its

to stage the meet inside
Jamaicas premier sporting

Once youre inside theres
much more you can do in terms

opportunity to have competition
because without competition
they will not have enough prac-

advantages, he added.
Smith also said the fact that
the track was fairly new, being

added attraction which will
enhance the times returned for
track events.
Our goal is to have the

moves back

B
rooklyns rising star, singer, TV
host and special education teacher,
Khalilah Rose, recently moved her oper-
ations to Jamaica WI, where she was
born but migrated to the United States
before she was three years old.
She told Sadeke Brooks, a staff
reporter at the Jamai can Gl eaner, that
"I just felt like it is something that I was
called to do. The passion is instilled in
me, so I decided to use music as a tool."
Now in Jamaica, Rose said she
plans to spread her positive message.
She gave an impressive performance at
Sting in December and is looking for-
ward to perform at Rebel Salute later this
month. During the time here, she also
has plans of working with numerous
music producers.
A special-education teacher in New
York for years, the calm-sounding artiste
left her job and returned to Jamaica only
a few months ago. She explained that
she left the job because "they wouldn't
allow me to do certain things". She said
she was not being given the opportunity
to visit Jamaica on a regular basis to
pursue her music career.
Singing professionally for five
years, Rose said she has always been
singing as she was a member of her
school choir.
Khalilah Rose is an exceptional tal-
ent. Her lyrics, penned to inspire a gen-
eration, articulated to bring awareness to
the struggle of all people, yet soft
enough to resonate lullabys, love
music, and chants to the Almighty (El
Shaddai).
Khalilah is a conscious spirit whose
music brings about awareness of the
world around her. Having a special affin-
ity to music, she was inspired and this
started her journey as a song writer at age
12.
Singing was innate as her voice
would travel through the house. Her fam-
ily was her original fan base, encourag-
ing and watching, as she would demon-
strate her natural ability to dance, sing
and act.

Kingston, Jamaica:

partnered with the Shaggy Make a
Difference Foundation to secure multi-
Grammy award winner Ms. Lauryn Hill to
headline Shaggy s all-star cast of local
and international performers for his
Shaggy and Friends in Concert charity
event.
Now in its third staging, the concert,
which will be held this Saturday (January
7) on the lawns of Jamaica House, is
International Recording Artiste Shaggy s
major fundraiser for the Bustamante
Childrens Hospital.
Ms Hill joins Shaggy, the former Ruff

R&B crooner Ne-Yo), Maxi-Priest, Half
Pint, Cocoa Tea, Deniece Williams, I-
Octane, Romaine Virgo, Assassin, Wayne
Marshall, Tami Chynn, Gyptian, Mr Vegas
and more.
According to Stephen Price, Head of
Marketing for LIME, although the
Shaggy concert has become one of the
most prestigious charity events on the
social calendar, it is the reason for the
concert that makes it easy for LIME to
partner with the organisers.
This event has raised millions of dollars
for the Bustamante Childrens Hospital
and we at LIME are happy to have part-
nered with Shaggy on this amazing ven-
ture. We knowhowimportant this institu-
tion has been for so many children and
families, Mr Price said.
We are particularly happy to be adding
the special mega star-power of Ms. Hill to
the event. The anticipation we have been
feeling makes us confident that her per-
formance will be have a distinct place in
the history books, Price further com-
mented.
In addition to partnering with
Shaggy, we have also created opportuni-
ties for our customers andJamaicans in the
Diaspora to participate and contribute to
the effort. As such, we will be providing a
live broadcast of the concert on LIME
Mobile TV and via pay per view online
from which we will donate proceeds.
In addition, Mr. Price disclosed that a
donation scheme has been set up for LIME
customers to donate $50 per text whenev-
er the word donate is sent to 444-4248.
Proceeds from this years staging of
Shaggy and Friends will go towards the
construction of a 15-bed intensive care
cardiac unit at the hospital. The annual
concert was initially staged in 2009 and
again in 2010, there was no show last
year. The previous two editions of Shaggy
and Friends raised over JA$57 million for
the hospital.

YOUTH in FOCUS
Bullying:
How to Recognize
the Warning Signs
I
t is very likely that there is a current
bullying situation at your childs
school.
The prevalence of bullying is stag-
gering: estimates range from 10% of chil-
dren who were said to be victims of
severe acts of bullying to 75% of students
who reported being bullied at least once
during the academic year. Researchers
have concluded that at least 25% of all
children will be affected by bullying at
some point during their school years.
Bullying occurs when a student is
repeatedly harmed, psychologically
and/or physically, by another student or
group of students. Bullying may not be
as obvious as you think. It presents itself
in many forms, including, but not limited
to, physical assaults or aggressions, ver-
bal and/or physical threats, intentional
exclusion from a group, spreading
rumors, repeated name calling, and
harassment through online social net-
works.
In addition, boys and girls tend to
bully differently. Boys tend to engage in
more obvious aggressive behaviors,
whereas girls bullying is less noticeable
and include spreading rumors and teas-
ing.
A common misconception is that
bullying is an unavoidable part of child-
hood and adolescence. As a result, these
behaviors go unnoticed by teachers and
parents.
Here are some warning signs that
your child might be the victims of bully-
ing; Ask yourself the following ques-
tions:
Does my child fear going to school? Is
my child anxious about school? Has my
child been out sick a lot? Does my child
complain about not feeling well as a way
of avoiding school?
Have I noticed bruises on my child?
When I ask my child about the bruises,
what is the response?
Does my child have friends? Have I
seen the way they interact? Is my child
submissive or withdrawn with other
children?
Does my child seem unhappy or inse-
cure? Does my child talk about nobody
liking her or not having any friends?
Does my child have difficulty being
assertive?
Talking to your child about being
bullied may be a difficult thing to do, but
you must intervene and advocate on
your childs behalf if she or he is being
victimized. If you suspect that your child
is being bullied, talk to a school adminis-
trator about the problem. Remember that
the school is responsible for providing
your child with a safe learning environ-
ment.

Tips to Secure Your
Wireless Network
1.Change Wireless Network Devices
Default Usernames and Passwords:
An Access Point Or, A Router, a core
device in a wireless home network has
factory default usernames and pass-
words which are straightforward and
known to hackers. Hence change their
login usernames and passwords that
are used to configure and store the set-
tings and so on. Keep complicated
usernames and passwords and keep
their records private.
2.Turn On Encryption Thats
Compatible: All Wi-Fi devices support
some kind of encryption. Encryption
technology scrambles messages sent
over wireless networks in order that
they cant be simply read by humans.
Use the most powerful encryption
available for your Wi-Fi network, i.e.,
WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so on.
3. Change the Default SSID: Access
points and routers all utilise a network
name called the SSID Service Set
Identifier which is set same by the
wireless device makers.
While SSID does not permit the
hackers to make an entry into your
home wireless net nevertheless it gives
them a fair clue that youre not serious
about the safety of your home Wi-Fi
network. Hackers interest after seeing
the default factory SSID set by the
maker still there on your home wire-
less network, make your network a
likely less complicated target for get-
ting attacked.
Hence you must change the
default SSID when configuring your
wireless network.
4. Disable SSID Broadcast
In Wi-Fi networking, the wireless
access point or router usually broad-
casts or sends the network name (SSID
) over the air at frequent intervals by
default. This feature is unnecessary,
and it increases the possibility that
somebody will try and sign in to your
home Wi-Fi network. Hence disable
SSID broadcast.
5. Never Auto-Connect to Open Wi-Fi
Networks
Connecting to an open Wi-Fi network
like a free wireless hotspot or your
neighbors wireless router exposes
your PC to security hazards. Though
not routinely enabled, most PCs have
a setting available that permit these
wireless connections to occur immedi-
ately without notifying you. This set-
ting should be disabled except when
required in some of the temporary cir-
cumstances.

Dear Divine Diva:
I
am a girl who has had my heart broken
for the first time. I know I should get
over this boy, but I can't stop thinking
about him. My mom loved him. We hung
out every weekend for six months.
I thought I might have been pregnant.
I'm not -- but I want to be. I know I'm not
ready to be a mom, but I want someone to
love me and depend on me. I need some-
one who won't leave me. I know my baby
wouldn't.
Should I become a mom? How do I

to him and just be his friend? DIVINE, tell
me the right way.
-Lovesick In The Bronx.
Dear Lovesick:
Becoming a mother is not the way out of
your heartache. Any young woman consid-

she can provide financially and emotional-

Most teenaged girls who become
pregnant do not complete their high school
education, and it has a negative impact on
their ability to provide for themselves and
their children.
The right way to work through this
breakup is to talk to your mother or anoth-
er trusted adult about your feelings.
Stop trying to maintain contact with
your former boyfriend. To continue will
only prolong your pain. Dedicate yourself
to achieving the most you can for yourself
in sports and academics. It will give you
less time to brood, and the more you
achieve the more sought-after you will
become.
It won't happen overnight. It will take
time, concentration and dedication. If you
take my advice you will come out of this
disappointment a much happier person.

How to Make
People Love You!
M
any of us mistakenly believe that
its wrong or conceited, to think we
have any good qualities.
We may spend a lot of time berating
ourselves for our negative qualities,
thinking that self criticism is the key to
improving our performance.
However, a constant focus on our
supposed shortcomings can hinder our
efforts to make friends with other people.
How can we have the confidence to
make new friends if we think we dont
have much to offer? How can we believe
that others could like us if we believe our
inner being is flawed? Or if we think we
are too boring to interest anyone else?
We may wonder what anyone else
would see in us if we dont see any good
in ourselves. In order for others to be
attracted to us, they must be able to easi-
ly see our best qualities.
If we focus on our good qualities we
will have much more confidence that we
have something of value to offer in a rela-
tionship.
If you wish to be socially successful,
its important to accept the fact that not
everybody is going to like you under all
circumstances. Not everyone is going to
like the package you come in, especially
on first meeting you.
Every person has a unique pattern of
likes and dislikes which were formed
long before they met you. Dont think
you have to condemn yourself as a fail-
ure if it seems that someone else doesnt
like you.
If someone seems to dislike you, the
reason for that dislike might have little or
nothing to do with you. The person who
doesnt like you might be fearful, or shal-
low, or busy or shy.
Perhaps you and that person are
simply a mismatch for each other at this
particular time.
Dont take yourself out of the game
by deciding that your flaws are bigger
than your assets. In fact, some of the very
qualities you consider to be flaws may be
irresistible to someone else.

any people who have chronic kidney dis-
ease don't know it, because the early
signs can be very subtle. It can take many years
to go from chronic kidney disease (CKD) to
kidney failure. However, when the kidneys do
fail it leads to death. Here are the top signs and
symptoms of kidney disease to look for.
Changes in Urination
Waking up at night to urinate Urinating
more frequently than usual Urine that is foamy
or bubbly Urinating less often, or in smaller
amounts than usual with dark colored urine
Blood in the urine A feeling or pressure while
urinating Difficulty urinating
Swelling
Failing kidneys don't remove extra fluid. As a
result, the fluid builds up in the body causing
swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face or hands.
Fatigue
When the kidneys are healthy, they make
a hormone called erythropoietin that tells the
body to make oxygen-carrying red blood cells.
As the kidneys fail, they make less erythropoi-
etin. With fewer red blood cells to carry oxy-
gen, the muscles and brain become tired very
quickly. This condition is known as anemia.
Feeling Cold
Anemia can make a person feel cold all the
time, even in a warm room.
Dizziness and Trouble Concentrating
Anemia related to kidney failure means that the
brain is not getting enough oxygen. This can
lead to memory problems, trouble with con-
centration, and dizziness.
Shortness of Breath
When kidney disease is present, extra fluid in
the body can build up in the lungs. In addition,
anemia can leave the body oxygen-starved and
short of breath.
Leg Pain
Some people with kidney problems may have
pain in the back or side related to the affected
kidney. Polycystic kidney disease, which caus-
es large, fluid-filled cysts on the kidneys and
sometimes the liver, can cause pain.
Rashes
When the kidneys fail, the buildup of wastes in
the blood can cause severe itching and skin
rashes.
Metallic Taste in the Mouth
A buildup of wastes in the blood (called ure-
mia) can make food taste different and cause
bad breath. A person with kidney problems
may also notice that a metallic taste in the
mouth.

G
reetings from the shores of the
Kingston Harbor. On Thursday,
November 18, 2010, I landed at
Kingston, Jamaicas Norman Manley
International Airport in a plane with 170
men and 2 women-all Jamaican citizens.
The flight was an American law
enforcement vehicle and we were all
shackled in handcuffs. The prisoners on
board ranged from men who were just
completing 20 years for murder, down to
people like myself whose major crime
had been to overstay a visitors visa.
When the cuffs were removed from
my hands, I felt like I was at last at the
end of a twelve year bondage that started
in 1998, when I first landedat NewYorks
JFKAirport harboring the thought that I
would be testing the cold waters to make
the place my new home: Like thousands
of others, I did not know what I was in
for.
Now being one year since I have
returned home, breaking the long fast
from the tropical island paradise lifestyle
I so treasured, I now see Jamaica through
the eyes of a thirty-something- year-old
who, like most spent his early youth and
teenaged years trying to figure out my
immediate surroundings and this general
enigmatic concept called life. But, unlike
most, spent all his twenties gaining his
only work experience thus far in a for-
eign city.
When I was leaving Jamaica, there
were many areas of the island and even
my resident city of Kingston that I had
not explored. Afewdays ago, I witnessed
and took part in our countrys most
recent general election. Not only was it
important to me because this is the first
time since Ive been eligible to vote that
I was actually here to exercise this right,
but it was also very important because,
within my spirit, I feel like and have
been feeling for a few years now that the
world is within a strong mode of renewal
and transformation.
I have been sensing that there is a
new generation of which I am part of is
ripe and eager to lead the world. Evidence
of this trend can be seen in the fact that a
40 something-year-old black/biracial
man holds the highest office in America
and the people power revolutions now
taking place in Egypt, Lybia and Syria.
All this lead me to the nowobvious-
ly misguided feeling that the ruling
Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) would have
carried the majority of the votes, thus
giving them and the fresh young leader
another term to try to dig us out of the
hole created primarily by the global eco-
nomic crises and possibly creating a
more unity-driven brandof politics in the
process.
Oh how wrong can a know it all
like myself be sometimes. However, the
Peoples National Party (PNP) not only
won the elections but took twice as many
seats as the JLP, sending a clear message
that, for whatever reason, the people of
Jamaica prefer being lead by the party in
red/orange.
It is my humble opinion that the
young AndrewHolness though not being
called to rebuild the nation right nowhas
definitely been summoned by destiny to
rebuild what one graffiti(ed) wall in
downtown Kingstons parade square
dubbed the Jamaica Loosa Party.
The best and brightest spark of light
that transpired throughout all of this
however, is the fact that the election had
been the countrys most peaceful general
election to date revealing to people,
like Mr. Holness and concerned citizens
like myself, that the dream of Jamaicans
being mature about democracy is finally
here and I am happy I was here to expe-
rience it it is good to be home.
God bless this beautiful island.
