CONTENT TOPIC 1 : GRAPHIC SYMBOLS FOR ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC SYMBOLS. Engineering graphics is a fundamental communication medium used by technically trained people worldwide to design, construct, and operate structures, machines, or products. Graphic symbols for electronic engineering are a shorthand used to show graphically the functioning or interconnections of a circuit. A graphic symbol represents the function of a part in the circuit. Electrical/electronic graphics represents the largest of engineering disciplines, surpassing all others in the 1970s. Electrical/electronic graphics differs markedly from the more closely related architectural and mechanical graphics. Electrical and electronic symbology and drawings are not drawn to scale unless required by a structure (printed-circuit board) or machine interface. The electrical and electronic engineering drawings include block, line, schematic, wiring, terminal, and logic diagrams. 1.2 ELECTRONIC COMPONENT GRAPHIC SYMBOLS. An electronic symbol is a pictogram used to represent various electrical and electronic devices (such as wires, batteries, resistors, and transistors) in a schematic diagram of an electrical or electronic circuit. These symbols can (because of remaining traditions) vary from country to country, but are today to a large extent internationally standardized.

There are several national and international standards for graphical symbols in circuit diagrams, in particular: IEC 60617 (also known as British Standard BS 3939) ANSI standard Y32 (also known as IEEE Std 315) Australian Standard AS 1102

Different symbols may be used depending on the discipline using the drawing. For example, lighting and power symbols used as part of architectural drawings may be different from symbols for devices used in electronics. National and local variations to international standards also exist

The following comparison of circuit symbols is based upon the following international/national specifications: IEC 60617 graphic symbol database (DIN EN 60617-2 to DIN EN 60617-12) NEMA ICS 19-2002, ANSI Y32.2/IEEE 315/315 A, CSA Z99

GRAPHICAL SYMBOLS DRAWING METHOD 1. Block diagrams to provide a quick interpretation of the relationship between the different components in electronic equipment represent the most detailed category of electronic drawings. They depict every component in a circuit, the component's technical information (such as its ratings), and how each component is wired into the circuit. A square or rectangular block is the usual basic symbol used in block diagrams The block diagram should start in the upper left corner of the drawing and the components read from left to right. Graphic symbols are often used to demonstrate input and output devices, such as speakers, microphones, or antennas. 2. Schematic diagrams To provide the basic circuit connection information for electronic products. Components of the electronic system are often drawn in stages that represent the function of the device. Individual components are labeled with "reference designations," values, and suppliers identification. A reference designation is a letter (or letters) identifying a component

USING TEMPLATE There is various template that can be used in draw electronic components such as
