GIF is an acronym that’s famil-iar in the dining-out context, but change it by an alphabet -to TGIT – and you get a com-pletely new context. Not Tuesday, not Thursday, but The Great IndianThali. The restaurant, which openedto public on the last day of October,is a venture of Veg ConceptHospitality Pvt Ltd. Located on thebusy 80 Feet Road in Koramangala, itis housed in a building that is fastbecoming a complete food destina-tion in itself, with a Spanish restau-rant, a North Indian eatery and asoon-to-be-launched Resto-bar andgrill. While many a restaurant inBangalore serves a North Indianand/or South Indian thali, or even aregion-specific version, TGIT clearlyhas ‘Mile food mera tumhara’ inmind. But they do plan to have amonthly region-specific special withguest chefs soon. Meanwhile, you-can lounge on low seating, or func-tional or high chairs as you watchthe traffic snarls below and contem-plate if curd rice and paneer lababdardo have a future together.
 Appetisers:
The prix fixe (set) menufeatures four starters and the samosasthat were served first turned out tobe the hot favourites. A crispy exteri-or with a standard but mildly spicyand non-greasy filling and comple-mented by the imli chutney meantthat everyone asked for a secondhelping. The Dahi Vada – soft andfluffy vadas in a faintly tangy curd, was equally popular. We also got thenot-so-commonly-found Makhaivada – made with corn ground to apaste, and though the snack was notin the same league as the ones pre-ceding it, its uniqueness makes it adish worth trying out. Its blandnesscan be offset by the chilli chutneythat’s provided. The cheese ballswere the most debated dish, as a fewof us found it well worth gobblingup, especially with the mint chutney, but discerning palates detected thatthe cheese was not really fresh.
Entree:
The Ker Kismis, a Rajasthanispeciality made of desert berries wasa dish that found favour with every-one. The different texture providedby the berries and the occasionalsweetness rendered by the kismismade it a singularly unique offering. The Paneer Lababdar was aclose second and was takendown a notch by theslightly hard paneer, though the mildly spicygravy did its best tomake up. The ParwalMasala, made with un-peeled point gourd wasanother dish that used itstexture to good effect. TheShrikhand, though classifiedas a dessert, made an appearance, probably to serve as a combinationwith the Masala Puri. But it proved tobe too diluted and though theMasala Puri got the flavour right, thecombo didn’t really work. None of the other main course dishes – DalMakhani, Dal Tadka, Aloo Matar –managed to leave an impression. TheFulka proved to be too thick and thePulao rice needed some more cook-ing. The curd rice just about man-aged to stay true to character.
 Afters:
Since it was a prix fixe menu, there was no danger of desserts notbeing available. The soft Gulab Ja-mun did a splendid job andgot the sweetness of thesyrup just right. The Rasmalai continued tobe another depend-able source of sugar-based joy. TheLauki Halwa was aunique option andthough it was a tadheavy and greasy, wethought it was an acceptablepart of the halwa’s character.
In all:
With the starters and dessertsdoing an excellent job, the meal be-gan and ended well. The main coursewas a bit of a disappointment. Con-sidering that one can have as manyservings of preferred dishes, the pricing is quite justified. With a fewunique dishes mixing it up withfavourites from across the country,TGIT does seem to have a reasonablygood offering when you’re in themood for vegetarian fare.

FIVE OF A KIND- BURGER

9I am a vegetarian and I feel the McVeggieburger is delicious. They use simple ingredi-ents that blend well. The chickpea patty tastes great and I sometimes like to eat it onits own. The iceberg lettuce is crisp and thepickles tangy and delicious. Sometimes, Ibuy a meal that comes with fries. But theburger serves well for a quick snack.

0I love the jumbo UFO Burger here. It makesfor a hearty meal. There’s cold chicken sal-ad on one side and salami and cheese on the other. The sauce is what makes theburger taste so heavenly. A red dressing –a combo of mayonnaise and tomato sauce– it is at once sweet and tangy. The cheeseis melted just right enough.

0The place is famous for burgers. Being achicken lover, I always go for their chickenburger – the jumbo-sized one. Before I evenbegin with the burger, a note on the mayon-naise sauce – it is truly delicious. I alwaysask for extra mayo and they oblige. Thebuns are soft and the ingredients that gointo the chicken burger are a culinary treat!

0I always pick the All American Chicken burg-er here. The portion is just right. I don’tknow what sauce goes in it but it is very tasty. The succulent juicy meat and softbuns make a terrific combination. A side of French fries completes it. A perfect burgerneeds the perfect mayonnaise and I believeit is in this burger! A perfect 10 on 10!

0Though a little heavy on the wallet, theburgers are very nice. I pick their chickenburger. Chicken patty served in warm softburger buns, I love the taste of sesameseeds, mayonnaise, ketchup, coleslaw, let- tuce, tomatoes and cheese slices. Some- times, I add extra toppings (at a cost). Andit is always served with crispy French fries.
