In the picture, you see Bobby and Blake hard at work in the Jenner Bakery. The cookies were snarfed down before midnight on Christmas Eve. There is a certainly a joy to giving gifts, especially if you think you got just the right thing for the one you care about. You cant wait for them to open the box or bag. You look for the expression on their face. You wonder how they will react. Will they be surprised? In awe? Grateful? Now, just imagine the joy and delight God had in His heart to give us the gift of His Son. Imagine how proud and happy God was looking down from heaven. I am proud of the generosity of our parishioners during the Christmas season, especially as we reached out to families that are in great financial need. We were able to bring them some comfort. There is plenty of good news. This Sunday, we are privileged to hear, what you might say is the rest of the story. So often at Christmastime, gifts are gathered and given away, but we dont exactly know more beyond that. We know that they were collected, but we wonder what was the actual impact upon the families that received the gifts. This is why we carry on the tradition here at St. Cyrils of having our recipients of our Tree of Love program share their reflections on what the impact was upon their particular charity. Once again we welcome Fr. Scott Donahue, the Director of the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, along with his Assistant Director, Mario Tamayo. Fr. Scott will celebrate the 5:30 PM Mass on Saturday this weekend, and Mario will share his reflections at the 10:30 AM Mass this Sunday. We are also happy to have representatives from the Womens Center and from our Sharing Parish, St. Adalberts, who have also benefited from the Tree of Love program. I would like to thank Bev Kapustiac and Beth Rendak who did a wonderful job organizing and directing the Tree of Love program for our parish this Advent. (The

Todays celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord brings us back once again to the Nativity scene in Bethlehem as we note the arrival of some important visitors from the Far East. They come to pay their respects to the humble Holy Family. We follow spiritually with the Three Kings as we listen to the classic gospel story and take a second look at the miracle in the manger. Our prayer this Sunday helps us to hold onto the joy and peace that comes with the birth of the ChristChild and not let the sacredness of this season quickly slip away. As a sign of reverence and appreciation, these wise men bring the special gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, all symbolic treasures from their native countries. This Sunday, families are invited to take an epiphany packet home with them. It contains a gold star, some incense, chalk and a blessing prayer. It is a tradition on Epiphany Sunday, and as we enter into a new year, to bless our homes and pray for Gods peace and joy to be upon all who will visit us throughout the year. We mark the doorways of our homes with a sign of the cross, a sign of our faith. May we show the same hospitality and welcome as Mary, Joseph and Jesus did to the three strangers who surprised them in the middle of the night. What Did You Get? Theres a lot of gift-giving and a lot of giftgetting that happens during the Christmas season. One gift might even be rewrapped and passed along several times, hopefully without ever being noticed. One of my favorite moments on Christmas Eve was when two little guys walked into our priests sacristy before Mass and handed me a plate of freshly baked cookies that they cranked out at home. They had big smiles on their small faces that reflected the pride of their creations in the kitchen.

Tree of Love represents nearly $30,000 in purchased gifts by parishioners.) Pictured below are the many merry elves who assisted with the gathering and delivery of all the gifts. Santa and Rudolph would be very proud of all your hard work! Thanks again for a great job! Yes, there is a joy in giving! The Three Kings from long ago knew this and we follow in their footsteps.

Welcome to SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish

Thank You to the 549 families who have supported our campaign with their pledge. Those choosing to be acknowledged will be listed in our bulletin.
Loving God, We thank You for the generous blessings You have bestowed upon Our Faith. May Your Spirit give us the vision to look into our hearts for inspiration, and in your honor, respond with our sacrifice, Our Gift. Help us as we care for this sacred and holy place, Our Home, where we come to offer you glory, praise and honor. Amen. Our Faith, Our Gift, Our Home Capital Campaign
Goal Pledged $1,000,000 $638,352 Thank you for your support this year to our Capital Campaign. We have completed the first phase of our project with the renovation and construction of much needed additional washrooms in the back of Church and Sacristy area. As well, two new Reconciliation rooms were constructed to provide a more reverent and sacred space to celebrate the Sacrament. Planning is now taking place to embark on the much larger second phase to begin in June of 2012 with the painting of the interior of our church. The good news is we are over halfway to our overall goal. The success of our campaign will enable our parish to continue our ministry and enhance our worship and prayer. Working together, we can met the needs of our parish community both today and for many years to come. Let us in faith, share our gift and care for our home.

January 8, 2012

Do we let fear and apprehension keep us from a ministry? Sometimes that happens with SPRED because the people we welcome are those with a developmental or intellectual disability or learning problem. Did you know that people with these challenges are loving, giving and precious gifts to us. What you see is what you get. They have no masks as we sometimes can put on. They enjoy life as we enjoy life They need a support system to grow in their faith ad SPRED provides this for them. SPRED is a different kind of faith development program because of the way our friends come to know life and their God it is well researched And has been around for over 40 years. It is not like religious education or a teacher/student/ classroom model of faith sharing. It is a small faith sharing group where people come to know each other through sharing ordinary life experiences and finding God within everyday life. Training is provided for all who volunteer. There will be a SPRED Information Night for parents and interested men and women on Tuesday, January 10th at 7 PM in our schools teachers lounge.

Christmas & Year End Giving

The PADS season is in full swing!

PADS is an acronym for Public Action to Deliver Shelter. It is a series of facilities, mostly churches, which serve as a safe haven one night per week for homeless men, women and children. St. Lukes Orthodox Church is the Monday night shelter we support. The churches in Lemont cover all the needs on the first Monday of each month, October through April. But St. Lukes is finding it more and more difficult to find people to cover the other Mondays during the month. The shift times are: 7-11PM, 11PM-3AM, 3-7AM and 5-8AM. The work is simple and it is wonderful to develop relationships with the guests. If you could give only one shift from now until the end of April, it would be a big help to St. Lukes. Please seriously consider this. If you are interested, call me at 630.257.2414 or email at ddabneyj@st-als.org and I will put you in touch with the proper people. Thanks so much.

God calls us to be good and faithful stewards. Sharing our blessings helps us to build the Kingdom of God. Your financial support helps us to continue the missions and ministry of Jesus. As we approach Christmas and the year end, please review your parish contributions and your capital campaign pledge payments as you plan for your Christmas and year end donation. Gifts made on or before December 31st may be tax deductible for this tax year. Gifts of stocks and other securities, held more than one year, are excellent gifts to make. You may be able to deduct the stocks fair market value and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation of the stock. Gift annuities are an option for people wishing to donate money to their parish over a long timeframe. Does your employer offer matching gift donations? Please consider donating your time, talent and resources to the church or school through one of the many church/school ministries or organizations. Volunteering can be such a rewarding experience.
