Hi,

Thank you for update. I suggest we try the steps below to narrow down the cause:

Sign In to 1.Open elevated CMD, run "net stop vss && net start vss", press Enter. If there is prompt that VSS Vote

service is not started, try "net start vss && net stop vss" press Enter. Run " vssadmin list writers" again, does the same issue occur? 2.Try to backup VM using Windows Server backup, is there any error message? If so, please let us know the detailed error message? 3.Restart this server and check if there is any difference. 4.If the same problem occurs, please help to collect MPS report: 1)Download proper MPS Report tool from the website below.

Microsoft Product Support Reports http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en 2)Double-click to run it, if requirement is not met, please follow the wizard to download and install them. After that, click Next, when the "Select the diagnostics you want to run" page appears, select "General", "Server Components", click Next. After collecting all log files, choose "Save the results", choose a folder to save <Computername>MPSReports.cab file. upload the file to Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/). If you would like other community member to analyze the report, you can paste the link here, if not, you can send the link to tfwst@microsoft.com (with this thread title or link in the email. Please dont share documents with this address). Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Sign In to 2.Is there any change made on this system? Vote

3.Is there any other problem related to VSS? 4.Could you perform a backup without error now? 5.Please try to disable all third party software, including antivirus software and Firewall to test, does the same error still occur? Thanks.

It seems like it have corrected it self or after following your advise... I logged in to continue testing, and suddenly it seems like it was OK. I'm looking forward to the next backup windows for this server to see if this solved my problem. Thx!

Hi,

Sign In to The VSS 'System Writer' appears to be set by the "Cryptographic Services" service. Restarting this service Vote

will reset the writer.

The VSS 'WMI Writer' appears to be set by the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service. Restarting this service will reset the writer. I do not understand why Microsoft cannot create a simple table listing the VSS writer and the related services. It would make issues like this so much easier to resolve. Best regards, James
