Transforming our revision vision

Revision is not punishment because a teacher doesnt want you to be done with a piece yet, or tells you it can be better Good Writers Revise all the time. Good writers will always nd aspects of their piece they can revise Good writers (in real world writing situations) revise during the writing process. It is a uid process.

Transforming our revision vision

Once you as a writer/student understand that MOST WRITING IS REVISION your concept of revision will change. Revision requires deep reading and thinking, revision is when the real work and real pleasure of creating a great piece of writing happens.

Revision Toolbox
Revision Lesson #1: Creating Your Own Thesaurus Writers should try to use unusual and different words instead of just ordinary words. Instead of I rode my bike down the dark road. Write I rode my bike down the murky road.

Revision Lesson #1: Creating Your Own Thesaurus

Writers get in the habit of using words again and again. Use these words to create your own personal thesaurus. Roald Dahl uses beautiful a lot...he created this personal thesaurus for the word beautiful. Beautiful: handsome, lovely, graceful, elegant, exquisite, delicate, beaming, radiant, charming So, every time he considered using beautiful as a descriptor he consulted his personal thesaurus for a different word to use in its place

Revision Lesson #1: Creating Your Own Thesaurus

The word Thesaurus is derived from the latin word meaning treasure Consider your Personal Thesaurus as a treasure chest of words to use to make your writing better.

Revision Lesson #2: Cracking open words Use this revision process to nd better ways to say obvious things Find words/phrases that Have no imagery Are vague or abstract Are overly used/cliche Obvious/used frequently

Revision Lesson #3: Changing Attitudes/Changing Latitudes

This revision process is all about looking at the point of view (perspective) a piece is written from and trying a new perspective.

Maybe you wrote a piece about an even involving your boyfriend/ girlfriend but your wrote it from your perspective. Try to re-write it from the other persons perscpective. What did they see/feel. This can add new depth to an otherwise boring piece of poetry.

Revision Lesson #4: Structure adjustment

Structure adjustment is a revision tool used to take a poem in the way its built and change the structure. Individual lines can be cut/combined/switched around Lines in stanzas can be moved around inside the stanza Stanzas can be put in a different place inside the poem Try some things, see if you like it, try again, until you create something great.

Revision Lesson #5: Cut out the excess

One of the best rules to live by (but the hardest things to do to your own writing) when revising poetry When in doubt, cut it out Poetry is not like prose it shouldnt be really wordy, with a lot of extra words when just a few will do. Instead of: The sun was rising in the morning over the distant horizon like a Phoenix Try: The sun rises, a Phoenix, on the horizon Hints: Cut out prepositional phrases. Metaphors are stronger than similes. Sometimes a line just isnt needed.
